Apple announced on Monday that iOS 6 is now on 300 million iOS devices, including the iPhone and iPad. This accounts for over 60 percent of total iOS devices sold globally and is an impressive stat for a mobile OS that’s been out for a mere six months.
This 60% adoption rate blows Android out of the water, which has struggled to get customers to adopt the latest version of the OS. The latest versions of Android include version 4.1 and 4.2 Jelly Bean, which is powering only 10.2% of Android devices. The bulk of Android devices (47%) are still on version 2.3 Gingerbread.
Much of this discrepancy between Android and iOS adoption can be attributed to manufacturers and carriers. Both groups drag their feet and don’t update devices in a timely manner. Apple, on the other hand, issues updates regularly OTA to customers and doesn’t have to deal with red tape associated with carrier approval and modification by third-party manufacturers.
