Air Canada App for BlackBerry Launched

BlackBerry AirCanada Air Canada App for BlackBerry LaunchedHot on the heels of their iPhone application, Air Canada has released an app for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) which lets you check-in, board, receive important notifications and look up flight status. This is way handier than the web signal for BlackBerry that they had before, and complements their other mobile services, like 2D barcode boarding passes, very nicely. Of course, it’s only on Air Canada, so if you’re flying with anyone else, you might want to take a look at WorldMate Live. If Air Canada is your first choice (and even if it isn’t, you can archive the app on your SD card), check out the BlackBerry App World for more info.

1-800-Flowers.com App Comes to Android

Fellas, if you’re in the doghouse, you can now order flowers via your Android phone. Handy. 1-800-flowers.com have announced a downloadable storefront app for Android. The new app is based on Digby’s Mobile Commerce Suite Platform, and brings access to many of the products you’ll find on the main website.

When asked to comment on the new app, Dave Sikora, CEO of Digby noted:

1-800-FLOWERS.COM is an innovator in cross-channel retail and customer-focused technology, and we are pleased to once again have the opportunity to be a part of their vision to provide their customers the best mobile shopping experience possible.  We are excited to expand our mobile offerings and help retailers stay abreast of today’s rapidly changing consumer habits through the incorporation of the Android platform.

Tight integration with native Android apps is apparently built-in, allowing users of the app to select names and addresses from either their online account, or device memory…. And, of course, orders can be placed directly from the app itself, a feature that may allow men across the country to escape from the doghouse… no matter where they happen to be.

WorldMate Live for BlackBerry Updated with Yelp Reviews

BlackBerry WMLYelp 300x225 WorldMate Live for BlackBerry Updated with Yelp ReviewsTravel application WorldMate Live has updated to version 3.0, boasting new browsability of user-generated reviews from Yelp, along with a few improvements to their calendar sync and hotel booking functions. Honest reviews are great to have when you’re in an unfamiliar city; sure a quick Google (NSDQ: GOOG) search can point you to a store or restaurant, but it would certainly be nice if to know beforehand if you’re wasting your time going there. WorldMate Live has a bunch of other great features, including flight status lookups, a time zone calculator, Outlook integration, and a whole lot more. The 3.0 update is only for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), but they’ve got version for iPhone, Symbian, and Windows Mobile as well. Air Canada Releases iPhone App

iPhone AirCanada Air Canada Releases iPhone AppThe nice folks at Air Canada have released a free iPhone application that allows you to check in, be notified of changes, look up flight statuses, and even rent cars from your device. I’m not sure if it would win out over WorldMate Live when it comes to itineraries, but if you do a lot of travelling on Air Canada in particular, their app may very well do the trick – and hey, it’s free, so you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out. Mobile check-in is awesome, and makes life a lot easier when wrestling with those kiosks, although airports and airlines are starting to wise up when it comes to mobile.  Hit up iTunes to download your Air Canada application, and if you’re rocking something other than an iPhone, they’ve got a web signal icon for BlackBerry, 2D boarding passes,  a mobile site and lots more.

The Signal #34: Google Voice Drama and Mophie iPhone Battery Pack Giveaway

intomobile the signal logo The Signal #34: Google Voice Drama and Mophie iPhone Battery Pack Giveaway

C’mon, who really uses Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Voice anyway? Oh. That many, huh?

iphone mophie The Signal #34: Google Voice Drama and Mophie iPhone Battery Pack GiveawayMan, if Joe Rogan is pissed at Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) about pulling the third-party Google Voice app, you know it’s serious. What, Mike Arrington’s ditching his iPhone over it? Ah, whatever. In addition to the GV debacle, Will, Stefan and I also go through the relationship between Google and Facebook vis-a-vis a potential Android app, as well as what Sprint (NYSE: S)’s acquisition of Virgin Mobile U.S.A means for both companies.

This week we’re giving away a black mophie juice pack air for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The juice pack air a lighter and sleeker version of their beefier, more powerful version, but still offers a significant boost to battery life for those power users out there. U.S. readers, leave a comment in this post for your chance to win!

So long as you’re commenting, check out Stefan’s post asking how much you pay in a month on wireless, and what you get for it. I think we’ll see a lot of interesting international contrasts there, so go ahead and take a look at the comments so far.

We’re also continuing our App of the Week series. This episode we’re looking at travel apps for iPhone, Symbian and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) – hit the jump for download links, and the week’s headlines, rumors and releases!

WorldMate Live Announced for iPhone

WorldMate Live, one of my favourite travel applications for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), has made the jump to iPhone just in time for WWDC. WorldMate Live lets you check flight statuses, manage iteneraries, search for new flights, convert currency, and plenty of more handy utilities. Their promo video takes a great jab at the masses of useless applications out there for iPhone, and how WorldMate sticks out from the rest. A version for Symbian just came out of testing earlier this year, and their Windows Mobile app has been available for long before that. Free and premium version are available, just go to WorldMate Live to check out the differences, or hit up iTunes to check it out now.

Buzzd for BlackBerry Helps Find Nearby Nightlife and Submit Reviews

blackberry buzzd 2 Buzzd for BlackBerry Helps Find Nearby Nightlife and Submit Reviews

Buzzd, a location-based service that helps you find out what’s going on around town, has been around for about a year as a WAP site, but now have a dedicated program for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) now available in the App World. From the app you can search based on preference and location, book events into your native BlackBerry Calendar, add venues to your Contacts, and even provide feedback once you’re there by way of a built in thrill/kill rating system, as well as uploading photos and shooting out twitter messages from within the app. The BlackBerry Partners Fund shot some cash into Buzzd in October, so we’re left wondering about the ultimate revenue model. Considering Loopt is free, it seems unlikely folks would pay for the app, even with an active community supporting it. Venues, however, might be interested in buying into featured promotions if there are enough Buzzd users in their area. Regardless, it’s a slick-looking app – head over to buzzd.com for more info.

Video run-down after the jump…

WorldMate Live Updates with Google Maps Support

WorldMate Live, one of my favourite travel apps for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) (also available in S60 and Windows Mobile flavours) has had an impressive update lately, now plugging directly into the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps application. After plugging in your itenerary details through their web interface, you can review everything on your mobile and launch right into navigation through a Map link in the app. WorldMate Live has been busy working on lots of other stuff lately too, including hotel booking by mobile. For those looking, an iPhone version of WorldMate Live is on the way, thanks to the new APIs unleashed in OS 3.0, so sit tight! Everyone else, head over to m.mobimate.com on your mobile browser to get started. Just be warned, it’s a freemium model, so some stuff will be locked away for their subscribing customers.

Kayak Gets iPhone App for Budget Globetrotters

iphone kayak Kayak Gets iPhone App for Budget Globetrotters

Kayak is a great site for figuring out how to get where you want to go in the world while keeping your airfare to a minimum, but when you’re stranded in a strange airport with a concerned customer service rep who doesn’t speak a spot of English, you’re going to need some help. Kayak’s app for iPhone now lets you browse for flights, hotels, helpful phone numbers, and even check on current fare trends right from your mobile. Ticket purchasing is unfortunately not included in the package, although the ability to call service agents is. Handy stuff, but I’m still partial to WorldMate Live on BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). It’s free, so why not load it up next time you’re airbound?

14th GSMA Global Mobile Awards winners announced

14th GSMA Global Mobile Awards

It’s the last day of the Mobile World Congress and it’s time to announce the winners of the 14th annual Global Mobile Awards. The ceremony, which unfortunately we haven’t attended, was held at a gala dinner at the National Palace in Barcelona, and hosted by the rising star of comedy, Michael McIntyre. Black Eyed Peas’ frontman, will.i.am, and award-winning jazz artist, Jamie Cullum, were also there, in addition to all the mobile industry folks. Along with announcing the winners, GSMA also revealed the Global Champion of the 2009 Mobile Innovation Global Award Competition.

Finally, the GSMA’s Mobile Innovation initiative launched a new Awards format as part of the 2010 Global Mobile Awards, with the idea to showcase promising entrepreneurs from small and medium-sized companies. The “first leg” of the competition, the EMEA Tournament, will take place at the World Innovation Summit in Barcelona in June.

And the list of winners follows after the break.
