Samsung ends Symbian support!

The day has come. Just before the New Year’s Eve, Samsung has stopped supporting the Symbian platform. The Symbian Lab for developers was closed in October while the Symbian forum and other content related to the operating system will be removed today. We are everything but surprised and are now looking forward to see what Nokia can make out of Symbian. Personally, I’m kinda skeptical and considering they also place their bets on MeeGo, they don’t seem that confident either. Will Symbian end up as a feature phone platform? I’m Read more

Samsung i8910 HD gets another unofficial firmware update – HX-V11-5

Samsung should consider itself one lucky company to have such a dedicated hacking community for one of its products. The product we’re talking about here is the i8910 HD, which by some standards is still the best Symbian S60 device out there — for instance, it has a bigger screen than the Nokia N8 and stereo speakers, which the N8 lacks. It has received yet another firmware update (firmware version HX-V11-5), packing several cool features, including: Full integration of Qt 4.7 RC1, allowing for seamless running of Qt-based apps Ability Read more

Samsung i8910 HD gets two more unofficial fix-ups – HX-V8-32 and n2o4

Samsung should consider itself one lucky company for having such a strong community around one of its products – i8910 HD. The Symbian S60-powered smartphone recently got two additional fix-ups – HyperX’s HX-V8-32 and faenil’s n2o4. As you can presume, you can’t install both of these – you’ll have to pick which one will run on your respective i8910 HD. Either way, by installing any of the two – you’ll be significantly upgrading the existing firmware. I ain’t gonna suggest which one is better (cause both rock) and will leave Read more

Samsung i8910 HD gets another unofficial firmware update; Qt comes built in

Just when we talked about that latest unofficial firmware update for the Samsung i8910 HD, another firmware has been released (version HX7). This time, QT 4.6.2 Symbian^3 libraries are included in the mix, making us think the Nokia N8 won’t be the first Symbian^3 device available on the market. To be fair, it’s not just Qt that’s included with the upcoming version of Symbian OS, but it has always been pointed as one of its key features. Of course, some of the known bugs have been fixed meaning the phone Read more

Nokia: In the near future camera phones will be better than a DSLR; HD recording in 12 months

Nokia’s Anssi Vanjoki, while delivering a speech in Helsinki, told an audience that camera phones will soon rival professional cameras. Nokia will “revolutionise the market”, and heavy lenses will no longer be needed. All this is expected to happen in the “very near future”. Not very concrete, and loaded with marketing speak if you ask me. What’s more solid in terms of information is this quote: “It will not take long, less than a year, when phones can record HD quality video and you can transfer it directly to your Read more
