Skype has quietly pushed out an update to its applications for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad this morning, bringing these services more in line with their desktop counterparts. Reflecting Skype’s growing integration with its new owners in Redmond, owners of Microsoft accounts can now merge these accounts with Skype to enable users to chat with their full Outlook, Messenger, and Hotmail contact lists. The move is in line with Microsoft’s decision earlier this month to kill off Messenger and move the service’s 100+ million users over to the Skype platform. The … Read more
User reviews on the Google Play Android Store have been rife with trolls who post useless, spam reviews of apps, games, and other Play content, but a move by Google will soon see this trend change. Users wishing to post a review on Google Play will now be required to log into their Google account, and reviews posted will now display a user’s Google+ name and profile picture alongside the review itself, removing the safe anonymity internet commenters often hide behind. With the move, Google hopes the Play Store will … Read more

As promised, Nokia’s HERE maps has launched on iOS this morning. Nokia’s mapping program has been one of the bright spots on the Windows Phone Marketplace for Lumia headsets, and with Apple’s in-house built Maps program facing significant glitches and growing pains, HERE will provide users a top-notch experience that Apple Maps can’t yet provide. HERE provides voice-guided walking and driving directions, as well as in-app support for public transit options, and includes map overlay options for live traffic and public transit lines. Additionally, users can save map areas for … Read more
According to The New York Post, approximately 3,600 iPad minis were stolen from a cargo hold at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport. The report suggests that at least two individuals took a truck into the cargo area at JFK around 11pm on Monday night, and used forklifts to load two pallets of iPad minis onto the truck before the apparently lone worker in that area returned from a lunch break. When confronted, the two crooks escaped with the two pallets, leaving behind three more they were targeting. The … Read more
According to Horace Dediu of Asymco, there were only a few profitable smartphone makers in Q3 2012. Apple and Samsung combined to account for 99% of those profits, with operating profits of $7.95 billion and $5.1 billion, respectively. HTC accounts for about $168.8 million (using today’s currency exchange values) for about a 1% share. LG was not shown on Dediu’s list, most likely due to the company’s miniscule profit for the quarter. LG eked out a $19 million profit in its mobile line, which represents around 0.14% of profits earned for … Read more
People are ditching feature phones for smartphones en masse, largely to the benefit of Google’s Android operating system, according to the latest report from Gartner. Of the 428 million total mobile phones sold in Q3 2012, about 169.2 million (39.6%) were smartphones signaling the continued trend away from feature phones as smartphones become more powerful and affordable. When it came to which smartphones consumers were purchasing, the response was overwhelmingly Android, which accounted for 122.5 million (72.4%) of all smartphones sold during the quarter, while Apple’s iOS accounted for 23.5 … Read more
Update: This story has been partly debunked. Microsoft sent Pocketnow the following comment on Ballmer’s use of the word “modest”. “When asked about Surface, Steve’s use of the term “modest” was in relation to the company’s approach in ramping up supply and distribution of Surface with Windows RT, which has only been available via our online store and certain Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. While our approach has been modest, Steve notes the reception to the device has been “fantastic” which is why he also stated that “soon, it will be available in … Read more
Apple’s 6 month refresh cycle is here to stay, if rumors today out of China are to be believed. A Chinese business newspaper Commercial Times report this morning (via Digitimes) suggests that Apple may already be working on the iPhone 5S and a new iPad (5th generation iPad or iPad mini 2 with Retina) for a release in the first half of 2013. Digitimes suggests the initial production run for the iPhone 5S will be 50,000 to 100,000 units in December, with Apple testing an accelerated certification process for parts and materials in the 5S … Read more
Just a few weeks after the Acer Iconia Tab A110 was unveiled, a higher-end Iconia A220 has appeared in GLBenchmark results. The benchmark doesn’t suggest whether we’ll see a 7″, 10″ or other-sized display, though it does show that Acer upped the ante on screen resolution. The A220 opts for a 1,280 x 752 display as opposed to the 1,024 x 600 display in the A110, and features a 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Other than the few leaked specs outlined above, little else is … Read more
