About Ben

Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas! He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to 'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device) isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question of why you continue to use it... His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the occasional look at devices. Additionally, using his extensive experience in the industry, he will provide commentary on the industry at large, with regular (and hopefully thought-provoking) articles.

Usage review: Groovemaker Electro for iPhone/iPod Touch

By Ben Robinson on Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 5:17 PM PST
In Applications, Reviews

Anyone that regularly reads IntoMobile will know that I think the Groovemaker range of Apps are awesome – sitting in a perfect niche between recreational music, and professional music production – they are kinda like the guitar hero of mobile music production, but there’s real productivity in here too – it’s no game!
So just the other day, IK Multimedia, the creators of Groovemaker, released two new versions of the application – Electro and Drum n Bass (here). In this post, I’m writing down my thoughts on the Electro App, having used it quite extensively! More after the jump….
Download, loading, and opening tracks
Groovemaker isn’t the smallest of apps, but then again it’s got an fair amount of file-weight since it includes lots of really high-quality apps. I used iTunes on the Mac and then synced the iPhone as the fastest route to getting Apps installed. The App loads quickly once installed, and then the first time you open any of the included tracks, the App needs to unpack them. This takes a couple of minutes, but only happens once – then you are good to go!
UI and toggle buttons
The Groovemaker UI uses it’s own UI – that is, it doesn’t rely on any Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) standard buttons, shunning them instead for a set of very specific and functional buttons on screen. Many of the buttons are toggle buttons, which flip parts of the screen to allow you to see a greater screen estate than what you have. I’d imagine if this was a PC/Mac app, it would fill a screen, but with the iPhone 320×480 screen estate, you have to optimise space! No matter, it all works very well, once you know what is where. Sensibly, the buttons that you need whilst you are ‘in the mix’ are a decent size!
Mode of Operation
Within the UI you can kick off an auto-assembled track just using the ‘Groove’ button, and then start changing elements from there – this is my preferred method of using the app, because you can jump in to using it just with one button – brilliant for the moments when you might have 10 mins spare.
On screen as you begin are also the eight ‘pads’, which are buttons that you can assign sounds to – the aforementioned ‘groove’ button might generate a tune using sample on say six of these pads, and then you can either choose to re-assign the sample that’s playing out, or mute/solo out  either single or multiple pads – sounds complex? Nope, not at all, five minutes will see you sussing most of this app out.
Synergy of music
For me this is probably the winning part of the app – there must be 60 or so sample loops within the application, sub-divided in to categories. Most people understand that for the average piece of music, you need beats, bass, rhythm, FX, and maybe a touch of vocals – and groovemaker makes it incredibly easy to cut these soundbanks in and out.
Moreover, the app is designed so you can pick any sound, without needing to pre-listen, and cut it in –knowing you won’t get clashes – because each sample is checked to sit nicely with others – as I said, synergy.
I should make a specific note here about the Electro soundbanks – they really are superbly composed, and definitely sit well at the right bpm, instrument sets, and variety of things you might expect to hear in a Trance choon – a great version of the Groovemaker app!
Other stuff
There’s much more to do than just going ‘in the mix’ and changing sample loops though – you can adjust the volume, pan,  and speed of the track, jump between a series of auto-grooves (all auto-mixed for you!), and adjust all the usual options you might expect. You can even save your efforts!
Conclusion
Groovemaker Electro continues the ‘awesomeness’ of the Groovemaker series of applications – if you want to do something more productive than spending some time spare time playing a game, and you like music, this is the place to come. Download the app, find a track you like, and then make your own mix – fantastic fun, and highly recommended!
You can get Groovemaker Trance from Apple iTunes / App Store – search for ‘groovemaker’

jamie0 Quick hands on: Jamie Oliver 20 minute meals App (iPhone/iPod Touch)For those of you that don’t know him (and there might be a lot, since he’s a UK chef) Jamie Oliver is a celebrity chef, in the same sort of mould as the likes of Gordon Ramsay – and by that, I mean he’s an export that has filmed his TV shows in the US, and a number of other countries I’m sure!

Anyhoo, the point of this quick hands-on is to find out if his new cooking App is any good (hint/spoiler: yes)!

GrooveMaker Electro and D’n’B released for the iPhone/iPod Touch

IK Multimedia has announced the release of two new applications for the iPhone/iPod touch: GrooveMaker Electro and Drum ’n’ Bass (D’n’B). These complete the range of available GrooveMaker applications with two new style-based apps that allow anyone to create and share non-stop Electro and D’n’B tracks for DJing, remixing, multimedia and movie soundtrack compositions on the go, in real-time, just like a professional DJ or music producer.
For those of you that don’t know Groovemaker (can’t be many of you; I’ve mentioned it enough times!), it is ’simply ace’- better than spending 10 mins playing a game, you can instead spend 10 mins knocking up a quality dance choon!
GrooveMaker allows for instantaneous control over 8 stereo loop tracks, making it possible to remix the included massive loop library of drums, bass, bass drums, lines, pads, percussion and effects. Its unique and patented randomization feature allows musicians to generate a vast number of remixes on the fly, with one touch, to produce millions of possible groove combinations.
Loops made in GrooveMaker can be manipulated in real-time (pan, volume, mute, solo, group and tempo) and grooves can be arranged easily by dragging and dropping to create full-length tracks. These tracks can then be saved, previewed and recalled on the iPhone/iPod touch devices or exported as hi-quality .WAV files to any computer using a Wi-Fi network.
The new Apps, Electro and Drum ‘n’ Bass, add the sorts of sounds you might expect from each genre – although a key differentiator is BPM rates per app – Electro is around the 85-135 mark, whereas DnB goes al out from 150-180!
The Apps are $9.99/€7.99/£5.99, and are on the App Store NOW!
If you get bored of them, there are another stack of genre versions, including House, Hip-Hop, Techno, Trance ($9.99 /€7.99 each) and Club ($4.99/€3.99) versions. Oh and there’s even a FREE version which is very good too!
Check out http://www.GrooveMaker.com for more information, video and audio demos.

Are O2 prioritising certain types of data traffic for the iPhone?

By Ben Robinson on Thursday, October 29th, 2009 at 5:26 PM PST
In O2, iPhone

….. or are certain apps on the iPhone just not very good at connecting to the network? Let me tell you my story…

The other day there was a particular track that I fancied listening to, but I was out and about – normally I use iTunes via the Mac, but on this occasion it wasn’t an option – so for once, I fired up the ITunes app on the iPhone.

I enjoyed the user experience (well done AGAIN Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)!) – finding stuff, previewing it, and buying is SIMPLE – the only criticism I could possibly level is that perhaps the fonts and graphical bordering are a bit big – it would be nice to get more results/text on-screen in once go.

However I then purchase the track I wanted (Britney, obviously…!), and waited for a sluggish download – but I was shocked – the rate of download was incredible – seemingly only 20 seconds after I hit download, 7MB had shot down to the phone!

But how could this be? When I use Safari and Mail, the rate at which the network connection is made, and then rendering/email download occurs is slow – in some cases almost intolerably slow – and I know I’m not the only person that thinks this, it’s widely reported.

For some reason though, iTunes download traffic seems to be prioritised on O2s network – and to test this theory, I had a go at downloading a 15-track album – oh my god – it absolutely flew!

So this tells me one of two things:

1)     Either iTunes data traffic is prioritised on the O2 (NYSE: TEF) network – via IP, APN, or even at HTTP request level – something is going on….

Or

2)     Mail and Safari are really really bad at implementing their calls to network access / protocols for download

The disparity is quite amazing – I’d suggest you give it a go if you don’t believe it. Go to a 3G area (let’s at least give the network a chance to shine), and then try out collecting say 20 emails (or whatever is in your inbox to download), and then trying downloading a track. Now bear in mind a single iTunes track will probably be orders of magnitude larger than ALL the emails you download – what gives?!

Answers on a postcard, or better yet, in the comments to this post….!

New iPhone App MailTones adds a Personal Touch to Incoming Email

By Ben Robinson on Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at 4:26 PM PST
In Announcements, Applications

A new App from Electric Pocket is promising to tag up your emails with personalised sounds – it’s name? – MailTones!
Users can set a different email alert for each friend, family member or colleague in their Address Book. MailTones helps to distinguish high priority emails your boss or partner from lower priority emails from friends or group email lists.
MailTones can be set for a specific contact or one for all incoming emails from a particular domain – making it easy to recognise incoming emails from work colleagues or customers. It can also filter and provide custom tones for messages which include specific words in the Subject line.
The app comes with a collection of 25 tones ranging from discrete bells to more audacious (read: louder!) horns and buzzers. So for example you could set your default mail tone to silent, or ignore, and use MailTones to identify high priority people and subjects.
MailTones can also optionally pop up on the screen and display the sender and subject of an incoming email for users to know instantly whether or not they need to launch the Mail app to read the whole message.
In case you are wondering how it works, it requires your email service to support ‘forward a copy’ – the copies are sent to the MailTones server, which then uses push notifications to send the instructions for the sounds.
It is available in the App Store, with a launch price of £1.79. There’s also some more information on the MailTones website at mailtones.com.

Tunemaker is released for the iPhone

By Ben Robinson on Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at 4:10 PM PST
In Announcements, Applications

Tunemaker, a music creation tool for the iPhone & iPod has been approved by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and is now available in the App Store.
Just by tapping on the screen, you create a drum rhythm; add some bass, strings, guitar or any of the included 16 instruments. TuneMaker is a streamlined digital audio workstation, synthesizer, drum computer and music sequencer, which can record and play back 16 tracks of sampled instruments.
It’s like having Garageband in your pocket. An easy to use music composition tool that let’s anyone create music, even if you’ve never made music before, because it uses only five notes (instead of the twelve notes of a full piano keyboard) and by using a special scale they always sound good. There are 40 demo rhythms and songs pre-installed to get you started quickly.
I’ve given this a quick go, and I have to say it’s really not too shabby at all! More to come in a longer review about how the App works, but for now I’d say that you could certainly do worse than giving this a go :-)

word spin 1 Word Spin hits the iPhone!

‘Word Spin’ for iPhone has hit the App store recently. ‘Word Spin’ for iPhone is the mobile version of the award-winning classic word game that has you spinning lettered wheels in order to spell as many words as possible.

This is a highly polished app based on one of the world’s favorite word games. It’s a great mental exercise and its quite fun to challenge your friends and see who has the better mind for words.

Bizarre, I can’t remember playing this at all as a kid – yet it does seem to have been popular – at least from the googling I’ve done. Anyone else play this when they were younger – well if so you can now take it mobile!
