At the moment, there are two charging stations live, which can be found at Fort Greene Park, but more are set to become available this week in Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier I, Governor’s Island, and Pier 1 at Riverside Park and Union Square Park. By the end of the summer, AT&T aims to get all 25 stations out and available to battery hungry smartphone users.

AT&T STREET CHARGE MAKES CHARGING A PHONE AS EASY AS A WALK IN THE PARK

25 Solar Mobile Charging Stations to Debut in Outdoor Venues Throughout New York City This Summer

June 18, 2013 (Brooklyn, NY) - As part of an ongoing effort to keep New Yorkers connected, AT&T and Mayor Michael Bloomberg today unveiled AT&T Street Charge. This pilot initiative provides free solar mobile charging stations in locations across all five boroughs where the public can charge their phones, tablets and other mobile devices.

AT&T Street Charge is a direct outgrowth of Superstorm Sandy when AT&T powered the City’s distribution centers with commercial generators and pop-up cellular service. New Yorkers who had lost power for days or longer flocked to the centers seeking a charge and a way to communicate to the outside world. AT&T teamed up with solar technology company Goal Zero and Brooklyn-based design firm Pensa to develop the initiative and bring it to local residents.

Between now and the end of summer, AT&T will deploy approximately 25 AT&T Street Charge solar mobile charging units across the five boroughs. Along with the two solar mobile charging units now live at Fort Greene Park, charging units are also available this week at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier I, Governor’s Island, and Pier 1 at Riverside Park and Union Square Park.

“Thanks to AT&T, more New Yorkers will have improved connectivity and access to the wireless technology that has become such an important part of our daily lives,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “After Hurricane Sandy, I asked our private sector partners to step up and help improve the resiliency of New York City. AT&T is doing just that, and we’re grateful for their efforts.”

“We are always looking for new and meaningful ways to improve the daily lives of New Yorkers through greater accessibility to mobile technology,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York State President, AT&T. “Two years ago, we debuted free Wi-Fi in 26 locations across New York City Parks and last year became one of the first major carriers to offer underground cellular service on 36 subway platforms. Solar mobile charging is a natural next step in AT&T’s efforts to provide innovative services for New Yorkers that empower them to lead more sustainable lives.

“At NYC Parks, we’re always looking for ways to get New Yorkers and visitors into the great outdoors to relax and re-charge, and this gives it a whole new meaning,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White. “New Yorkers enjoy some of the best parks in the country, and now, thanks to this collaboration with AT&T, Pensa and Goal Zero, they’ll be able to power up their phones for free using solar power.”

Visitors will find AT&T Street Charge this summer in all five boroughs:

The public can learn where to find AT&T Street Charge by visiting www.att.com/attstreetcharge and on Twitter @attnyc #attstreetcharge.

The solar powered mobile charging stations complement Wi-Fi in the Parks, an ongoing joint initiative between AT&T, the City of New York and the New York Parks Department offering free Wi-Fi access to New Yorkers – regardless of provider. Today marks the launch of two additional Wi-Fi enabled park sites, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 5 and Foley Square. As of today, 28 New York City parks locations across the five boroughs now have free AT&T Wi-Fi as part of this initiative.

“Internet access for all is the foundation of a digital city, and AT&T’s technology partnership brings us another vital step closer to realizing New York City’s innovative potential,” said Rachel Haot, Chief Digital Officer. “Through the expansion of WiFi and the introduction of solar-powered mobile charging stations in more public spaces, we are helping to provide ubiquitous connectivity to New Yorkers everywhere. We appreciate AT&T’s support in helping us to achieve another milestone in Mayor Bloomberg’s Digital Roadmap for New York City.”

“Today’s announcement continues our goal to transform New York City’s parks into hubs for connectivity for both New Yorkers and visitors,” said Citywide Chief Information & Innovation Officer Rahul N. Merchant. “Whether providing a quick charge on-the-go or access to power during outages, we’re helping customers stay connected while enjoying New York City’s incredible public space.”

The solar mobile charging units work day or night, in sun or shade. During the day, three monocrystaline solar panels collect the sun’s energy to charge up powerful internal batteries. This enables AT&T Street Charge to power up phones, tablets, and other devices quickly – even when the sun isn’t shining.

Joe Atkin, President and CEO of Goal Zero said that “Nearly half of all Americans own a smartphone and the amount of time we spend on handheld devices has increased dramatically. All too often, we hear the dreaded low-battery beep and it happens at the most inconvenient times. Street Charge will fix that.”

Mark Prommel, Creative Director of Pensa noted that “We created Street Charge with community and public spaces in mind. It provides an elegant, durable and powerful off the grid charging solution. Our design pays homage to the beauty of clean, renewable solar power with its solar petals extended toward the sun.”

Developing sustainable solutions has long been a priority for AT&T. The company works with a variety of partners to engineer innovative answers to help address environmental and social challenges and this year CR Magazine named AT&T the top corporate citizen in America.

We can’t even count how many rumors that have pointed to the Sony Xperia Z launching on T-Mobile USA, but today it’s officially official. Landing sometime this summer, T-Mobile’s smartphone selection is becoming one hell of a lineup this year.

The Sony Xperia Z is the company’s best handset to date, alongside the Xperia ZL. The Z’s sleek and sexy design packs a punch with its water and dust resistant powers, as well as a healthy set of specifications to boot. Rocking a 5 inch 1080p HD display, 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixel camera, 16GB internal storage, and much more, the Xperia Z will sit nicely next to the likes of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4.

Now that the rumors have finally been proven to be true, we’re definitely happy to see Sony bring one of its smartphones to another US carrier. Previously, Sony had only released its Xperia smartphones on AT&T or unlocked through its website, with the exception of the Xperia Play, which was released for Verizon as well as AT&T.

The handset will ship in black and a limited-edition purple finish at launch. With no word about a white version, if you want the Xperia Z in a color that’s not black, you might want to go ahead and jump on the limited-edition purple version when it launches.

Expect to see the Sony Xperia Z hit T-Mobile shelves in the coming weeks.

Xperia® Z from Sony to Make a Splash at T-Mobile this Summer

T-Mobile is the only U.S. mobile provider of Sony’s flagship water-resistant smartphone

BELLEVUE, WA — June 18, 2013 — Continuing to offer customers a wide selection of hot 4G LTE smartphones, T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) today announced it will be the exclusive U.S. wireless company to carry the Xperia® Z from Sony.

The Xperia Z packs the best Sony has to offer into a premium Android-powered smartphone. T-Mobile will offer the device on its Simple Choice Plan with no annual service contract plus unlimited talk, text and Web on a screaming fast, nationwide 4G network with 4G LTE rolling out across the country.

“T-Mobile customers traveling this summer will love the Xperia Z with its big, beautiful HD screen, water-resistant design and advanced camera features,” said Jason Young, vice president of product marketing, T-Mobile. “This is an outstanding combination: a premium 4G LTE smartphone with Sony’s best features coupled with T-Mobile’s unlimited data and speedy nationwide network.”

Simple Choice Plan

With T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Plan, Xperia Z customers design their plan based on the number of lines and amount of high-speed data they want. Unlimited talk, text and Web with up to 500MB of high-speed data is $50 per month (plus taxes and fees) for the first line. Customers can add another 2GB of high-speed data at up to 4G speeds for $10 per month per line or get unlimited 4G data and up to 500MB of tethering for an additional $20 per month per line. A second phone line can be added for $30 per month and each additional line is just $10 per month. There are no caps, no overages and no restrictive annual service contracts.

T-Mobile’s 4G LTE Network

The Xperia Z will seamlessly connect to T-Mobile’s high-speed nationwide 4G HSPA+ network and advanced 4G LTE network wherever it is available, which is expected to reach 100 million people by midyear and 200 million nationwide by the end of the year1. T-Mobile’s 4G LTE rollout complements its existing nationwide 4G network covering 228 million people, which third-party tests show already rivals or beats existing competitive LTE networks in many markets. T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network is currently available in seven metropolitan areas: Baltimore; Houston; Kansas City; Las Vegas; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.

“With Xperia Z, we are thrilled to bring a breakthrough smartphone to T-Mobile, the breakout carrier in the U.S.,” said Timothy Hernquist, North America Vice President of Marketing, Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia Z offers customers a beautifully designed, water-resistant premium Android smartphone ready to handle whatever life throws at it.”

Sony went with a stylish and durable physical design with unique technology, content and connectivity all bundled into the Xperia Z. A 5-inch 1080p HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 provides super brightness and clarity. The highly-durable design features tempered glass and anti-shatter film on the front and back and the highest levels of dust- and water-resistance2 (IP55 and IP57) in a premium smartphone. A 13-megapixel camera with Exmor RS™ for Mobile, the world’s first image sensor with HDR (High Dynamic Range) video for smartphones, delivers stunning photos and videos in any condition. And its STAMINA mode is designed to greatly improve battery standby time by automaticaly shutting down battery-draining apps when the screen is off.

Availability

The Xperia Z is expected to be available nationwide at T-Mobile retail stores, select national retailers and dealers and online via www.T-Mobile.com in the coming weeks. The smartphone will be available in a black finish and a limited-time only purple finish (while supplies last). For more information, visit http://t-mobile.com/Sony-XperiaZ.

[1]Broad LTE coverage planned for 2013; See www.t-mobile.com for coverage details. Qualifying service required. LTE is a registered trademark of ETSI.

2In compliance with IP55 and IP57, Xperia Z is protected against the ingress of dust and is water resistant. Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone is (i) protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55; and/or (ii) can be kept under 1 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP 57.

Apple’s announcement of iOS 7 got me more excited about anything the company has announced, ever. So much that I decided to return my week-old HTC One back to T-Mobile for an iPhone 5 last week. Now I’m back to my Nexus 4, down $100 in restocking fees, and I’m just fine with that.

I’ve been using Android phones since the G1 and have never strayed. Despite its eco-system lock in, one of the main reasons iOS has never appealed to me is that it simply looked boring. A little too plain. Well, iOS 7 changes that in a lot of ways, but the system itself remains largely intact, for better or for worse. Still, the latest version of its mobile operating system is pretty great.

My first thought was to purchase a 5th generation iPod Touch and load up iOS 7 on it. No harm, no foul. In retrospect, I should have done this, but I craved the full iOS 7 experience and didn’t want to be held back a lack of GPS, phone capabilities, etc.

Returning the HTC One wasn’t easy. It’s currently the only Android handset I’d spend money on that’s not a Nexus device, but the allure of iOS 7 was strong.

Appeal

Apple got a lot right with iOS 7. The facelift was much-needed and Apple added enough new features that would appeal to almost any Android user. Why? Because iOS 7 feels like there’s a little Android in it now as far as function is concerned and features like Control Center show this. But even the features that look influenced by other operating systems retain a wholly Apple feel.

My short time with iOS 7 proved to be a rather great experience. The new way to multitask, Control Center, and notifications were all a joy to use. Apple’s new modern look for iOS is going to delight a lot of people.

Living with iOS 7

Given that I was running the beta build of the OS, the bugs I ran into were expected, and there were only a few. The system itself and most Apple-made applications worked perfectly. A few apps like Netflix, IMDB, and a few others constantly crashed, but that’s something to expect. I am an Android user, after all.

It didn’t take long for me to remember that I can’t do certain things on iOS that seem to be taken for granted on Android.

After installing Gmail and setting up my accounts, I needed to send off my UDID so I could be added to a developer’s account through an application, but I couldn’t. iOS still has no default application settings, so I had to set up the Mail application. Easy enough to do, but with Gmail already setup and the go-to application I wanted, having to set up another application I’ll never use was a bit annoying.

I found myself using it quite differently than any Android device. The lack of glanceable information provided on the home screen (widgets) sent me to the browser significantly more. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the new Safari is pretty nice, but I did miss having my scrollable Twitter widget a swipe away on my home screen.

It was only the second day into owning the iPhone 5 that I became more accustomed to the revamped user interface, which was in fact the only reason that owning the device was appealing. The system still works in the same way, and retains most of the benefits and limitations. Why I thought the revamped UI would make me overlook this simple fact is beyond me.

George makes this clear in his iOS 7 initial impressions

“Make no mistake that while iOS 7 may look quite new at first, it is the same operating system from Apple you’ve come to love.”

For me, only the first part of the above sentence is true. The refreshed UI is more than welcomed, and really is beautiful to use, but it’s the same operating system from Apple that I’m not completely in love with.

“Your first impression of iOS 7 might not be one of total embrace, but that will come in time.”

This is also the opposite for myself, as my first impressions of iOS 7 were the main appeal for owning the iPhone. In time, that total embrace became more of an awkward side hug.

Investments Made

All issues I may have found with iOS aside, I probably could have kept the iPhone 5 and adjusted just fine. Still, what ultimately made me return the device is an issue that many will face when switching operating systems : Purchased applications.

Being with Android since late 2008, I’ve purchased a ton of applications and the idea of having to purchase them again for iOS wasn’t exactly desirable. It also didn’t help that many iOS applications are more expensive than Android applications, either.

In the grand scheme of things, I enjoyed my short affair with iOS 7. It’s undoubtedly the best version of the OS and will be very attractive to new and old users alike without overwhelming. I know I’ll eventually grab the latest iPod Touch, just to have iOS 7 around. I mean, I still have feelings for it and I’m not going to act like there was nothing there between us! I just wasn’t ready for iOS and I to be primary device lovers. We’ll take it slow, stay friends, and see where this iPod Touch take us. For now, I have to see if the HTC One will take me back.

Microsoft is at it again with its iPad-jabbing ads for Windows 8 tablets, using Siri as it’s weapon. This time around, the ad showcases Dell’s XPS 10 tablet against the world’s most popular tablet.

The ad is simple and to the point. Microsoft uses Apple’s Siri to make comments on the differences between the two tablets, all of which favor in the Windows 8 option. Clever. The features highlight the “zoom-out” function of the start screen, multiple windows, and expandable storage, with the kicker being the price point. For a limited time, the Dell XPS 10 is only $399 vs the $499 Apple iPad. Even still, we’d say that Apple’s significantly larger App Store should justify the premium, but features like expandable storage should definitely appeal to the customer.

With rather pitiful sales numbers for Window 8, Microsoft seems to take no issue pulling out all the stops with these type of ads. And we’re just going to go out on a limb here and say that the ads likely won’t have people rushing out to buy a Windows 8 tablet. Nonetheless, it’s cute to see the company trying.

Now if only Apple would start the I’m A Mac type of ads again.

Have a look at the ad below and tell us what you think. If we’ve learned anything from the ad, it’s not to pinch Siri.

Developer Ubisoft is set to unleash Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in late October of this year, but it’s not content with just the one title at the moment. Ubisoft is already hard at work on two upcoming Assassin’s Creed games to succeed Black Flag.

Ubisoft is taking its sweet time with the development of the upcoming titles, allowing the team to carve out a unique and innovative storyline and have a chance to change anything if needed without cutting into precious time needed for other parts of the games.

Black Flag is set to be one hell of a game in the Assassin’s Creed series. With Desmond gone (supposedly), and a new kick-ass assassin, it will be interesting to see where the developers take the upcoming titles. Black Flag also seems to a dramatic departure from Assassin’s Creed III, which was set in the US, and Conor becoming one of the most interesting assassins in the series.

If Ubisoft can match the polish and great storyline we saw in Assassin’s Creed III, then Black Flag will certainly keep fans of the series interested and pining for the upcoming titles.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be released on October 29th in the US, so we have a few months to wait. For now, be sure to check out the official trailer below!

While many are still waiting on either Google or Apple to ship their own smartwatches before considering such a purchase, Sony has had its own smartwatch offering for quite a while now. The small device didn’t get too much attention when it launched but it may get a little more with Sony’s recent announcement that its smartwatch has now gone open source.

What’s all the fuss? Well, Average Joe likely won’t be running out to grab Sony’s Smartwatch because of the announcement, but it open up many more possibilities for the device. Developers can now create custom software for the smartwatch, but doing so will break existing SmartConnect and SmartWatch applications on the Google Play Store. Still, we have our doubts that this limitation will keep developers from digging in.

Don’t expect to find any custom firmware right now, given that the project was just announced, but it shouldn’t take too long before they begin to pop up.

If you’re rocking a Sony Smartwatch and want to get your hack on, you’ll have to be patient for now, but you’ll soon get your wish. Hit up this link here to find out more on the Open Smartwatch Project.

Users can take advantage of the Active’s water resistance with a new camera mode called Aqua Mode that lets you take photos underwater. Of course, since the Active is still in the Galaxy S 4 family, it will also ship with popular features found on the original as well.

With summer in full swing, you need a phone that can go just about anywhere and endure the demands of an active lifestyle. To help you keep up with whatever comes your way, AT&T* and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announce the Samsung Galaxy S® 4 Active™, an evolution of the popular Galaxy S® 4 designed to withstand the hazards of everyday life.

Beginning June 21, you can pick up the Galaxy S 4 Active from any AT&T store or online for $199.99 with a two-year agreement. For consumers who prefer to place their orders now, AT&T will begin taking pre-orders on June 14 at www.att.com/galaxys4active. The Galaxy S 4 Active will be available in two colors: Urban Gray and Dive Blue.

The Galaxy S 4 Active runs on AT&T 4G LTE, which currently covers more than 200 million people; with plans to expand to cover 300 million people by the end of 2014. AT&T’s 4G LTE network was called “blazing fast” in a report** by independent testing organization RootMetrics. The report found AT&T’s 4G LTE network delivered the fastest pure LTE speeds in markets where AT&T provided 4G LTE.

“Continuing AT&T’s legacy as the first carrier to launch the Samsung Galaxy series, we’re excited to offer the next evolution of the popular Galaxy S 4. The Galaxy S 4 Active is a high-performancesmartphone with a stylish, protective design to keep up with the demands of everyday life. It’s truly summer-proof,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president – Devices and Developer Services, AT&T. “With its quad-core processor and access to the nation’s largest 4G network and fastest 4G LTE network you can stay connected nearly anywhere life takes you.”

Built For Life

The Galaxy S 4 Active was designed around life. It is IP67 certified to be water-resistant and dust<ins cite="mailto:Stacey%20Harth" datetime="2013-06-13T09:11">-resistant</ins>, making it perfect to take on any summer vacation whether it’s camping or the beach. It also has an Aqua Mode feature that lets you capture photos and videos underwater. Its 5-inch FHD TFT display is made from Gorilla® Glass, which is specially built to be tougher and more scratch-resistant. It runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and comes packed with a quad-core processor for faster, smoother gaming and apps.

But there’s more to the Galaxy S 4 Active than its sturdy, more resilient exterior. It also includes high-performance features that let you get more done on-the-go. The 8-megapixel camera includes multiple custom shooting modes, including Aqua Mode and Eraser Shot. It also features enhanced low light performance to help you get the shot you want even when lighting isn’t ideal.

Entertainment

The Galaxy S 4 Active has an Integrated Infrared (IR) controller which acts as a TV remote control, so you can use your smartphone to control your home theater system. When you’re on-the-go, Samsung Hub gives you access to more music, movies, books and games from multiple content sources all in one place– perfect for passing the time on summer road trips, or even while waiting in line while running errands.

Galaxy S 4 Active includes all the features that made the Samsung Galaxy S® 4 popular including:

Air View™: Hover your finger over photos, files, links and text for an instant preview.

Air Gesture™: Skip to the next song or photo, check your notifications or, if you’re driving, automatically answer a call on speakerphone just by waving your hand over your phone.

Eraser Shot: Remove unwanted background distractions in your photos and videos with just one touch.

Drama Shot: Capture a time-lapse event all in one frame.

Samsung Smart Pause: While watching a video, if you look away from the screen, the video will automatically pause and wait for you to return.

Story Album™: Create a printed book of your photos and have it delivered right to your door.

Productivity

The Galaxy S 4 Active is a master multi-tasker. Features like Multi Window let you use two apps side-by-side like a PC so you can reference your notes while writing an email or follow the game live while checking out your friends’ reactions on social media simultaneously.

This smartphone is SAFE™ (Samsung For Enterprise) to help keep your work data secure and separate from your personal content. Whether you are in the office or on vacation, the Galaxy S 4 Active balances stylish, professional design with enhanced durability.

Additionally, the Galaxy S 4 Active features an optional Easy Mode that simplifies the home screen with larger icons and your favorite apps.
