Samsung Omnia M: Why does this new Windows Phone have 384 MB of RAM?

Samsung has just announced a new Windows Phone called the Omnia M. It has a 1 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, 4 inch Super AMOLED display, 7.2 Mbps 3G connectivity, and a decently sized 1,500 mAh battery. What makes it strange though is that it has 384 MB of RAM. That’s not enough to run the full version of Windows Phone 7.5, but it’s also too much to run the low end version of Windows Phone 7.5. The Lumia 610 for example, Nokia’s “cheap” Windows Phone, has an 800 MHz Read more

Nokia to bring the 808 PureView to America, no subsidies to be found though

Nokia’s 808 PureView is a technological achievement that not everyone, this writer included, understands at first glance. Companies can’t just say they’ve made a smartphone with a 41 megapixel camera and not expect people to call bullshit. Here’s how it works in a nutshell: You take a picture with the 808 PureView and the sensor captures 41 megapixels worth of data, then the dedicated image processing chip onboard will average out the values of a block of several pixels and spit out what it thinks is an accurate representation of Read more

HDmobile: One port that does USB 2.0, USB 3.0, HDMI, and Display Port

Samsung’s Galaxy S II was the first smartphone to ship with support for Mobile High-definition Link, better known as MHL. It’s essentially a technology that enables the microUSB port on a mobile phone to also output video via HDMI. When you connect an MHL compatible phone to an MHL compatible TV, the TV will also be able to charge the phone, which is great if you spontaneously decide to have a Lord of the Rings marathon at your friend’s place. Today TranSwitch is introducing a new standard called HDmobile. It’s Read more

With over 1 billion downloads to date, it’s safe to say that Rovi’s creation, Angry Birds, is an amazing success story. But what comes after that? Deutsche Telekom, who owns T-Mobile USA, doesn’t want to do business in America anymore, but they can’t take their company behind the barn and but a bullet in its head. Is Windows Phone 8 already dead on arrival?

Paul Thurrott is to Microsoft what John Gruber is to Apple. By that I mean he’s been championing the desktop software giant since the 1990s. He recently wrote a piece on The Supersite for Windows where he outlined how Windows Phone 8 might land straight on its face due to the following reasons: First, Windows Phone hasn’t penetrated the market. It has a market share of less than 2% and it’ll be a miracle if that number doubles by the end of this year. That figure makes developers hesitant to Read more
