Consumers may love the iPhone, but carriers hate it

Ever wonder why when you walk into a carrier store, they always subtly (or in some cases, not so subtly) try to push you toward buying an Android device? The reason is because even though Apple requires a grandiose display of the iPhone, carriers make much more money off of Android phones. Carriers pay Apple the subsidy that is able to keep the iPhone down to its $199 price point even after cramming in loads of new features in every release. For Apple, this is good. For consumers, this is Read more

Outrageous: T-Mobile USA will not upgrade the Nokia Astound (rebranded C7) to Symbian Belle

Back in September 2010 Nokia announced a Symbian^3 smartphone called the C7. It can best be thought of as a Nokia N8, but without the fancy high end camera, and in a body that’s much more fashionable. Half a year later (April 2011) it hit American shores courtesy of T-Mobile for just $80 with a two year contract; they rebranded it as the Nokia Astound (see video below). When Nokia started pushing out Symbian Anna, an update to Symbian^3, many people rightly assumed that the Astound would also get the Read more

It’s like everyone’s “trading Oranges” these days. Just recently, we’ve seen Three Austria acquiring the local branch of Orange and now Partner Communications is looking to sell its big stake (44.5%) in Orange Israel. The company has apparently already hired investment bankers to look at options to get as much money as possible for the mobile network. To sweeten the deal, one of the advisors, Deutsche Bank, said it will offer credit lines of up to $1 billion if necessary to the prospective buyer. Partner Communications’ stake is worth around Read more

Phoenix Suns, Samsung team to bring tablets to NBA

There are two things I really dig: mobile technology and the National Basketball Association. That’s why it’s very cool to see the Phoenix Suns, Samsung and Verizon Wireless teaming up to bring Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets to the game. These 4G LTE-enabled tablets will be used throughout the Suns’ operation. This will include workers at the game showing perspective clients interactive views of their game seats and you could easily see kiosks or retailers in the arena using these to jazz up displays. It’s not just the business side Read more

U.S. Cellular unveils Voice Mail to Text service

You know it’s a pain to go through voice mail every day. Sure enough, you can detect some numbers and decide not to listen to them at all. However, there are others which you should/could listen, only to find out no action on your part is needed. Hence, Voice Mail to Text services were born, transcribing audio into text and allowing you to see (rather than hear) what a guy/gal on the other end of the line has to say. U.S. Cellular announced such service for its users, offering it Read more

Sprint’s releases its plan to phase out IDEN

Sprint is finally beginning to phase out its less attractive half, Nextel, as the company enters the first stage of transitioning customers off its iDEN cell towers. The Now Network put up a site that maps out where and when towers are being shut down. So for instance, if you live in my area of Hartford, CT, reduction is planned in late May of this year. This is something we’ve known since late 2011, and it’s an important part to Sprint’s “Network Vision.” The third largest wireless provider plans to shut Read more
