Read more]]> Alltel is the latest carrier to provide its Galaxy S II users with the Jelly Bean goodies that (as you know) include improved push notifications, Google Now and Project Butter enhancements. What makes their update unique is that it practically skips the Ice Cream Sandwich “phase,” bringing the phone from Android version 2.3 to Android 4.1.

This, however, includes a special process that apparently can’t be performed over the air. Instead, you’ll need to download the “Simple Upgrade Tool” from Samsung and follow its on-screen instructions to cram Android 4.1 to your smartphone.

Unfortunately, this is a Windows-only application so Mac users will have to do some BootCamp magic to update their Galaxy S II. Or — if they don’t like how that sounds — find some unofficial way to achieve the same thing. We prefer getting our software directly from manufacturers but you don’t have to follow our advice, quite the contrary…
