Just as we reported, China Telecom is preparing to launch its MVNO in the UK, marking the first time a Chinese operator has launched MVNO services outside of its domestic market.

According to the company’s Yan Ou (Managing Director of China Telecom Europe), there’s is a real gap in the market for the provision of tailored mobile services and competitive tariffs aimed at the growing Chinese population in the UK.

The rumor is that if everything goes as planned, China Telecom will then expand to other European markets, again targeting the local Chinese population with affordable services. We’ll see how that goes…

Nokia announced a new Symbian Anna smartphone in China that’s ready for NFC-based contactless payments. In addition, the device marked as 801T rocks a 4-inch ClearBlack LCD touchscreen, China Mobile-friendly TD-SCDMA connectivity, 8-megapixel “full-focus” camera with 720p video recording support on the back, VGA front-facing camera, 8GB of built-in storage, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, 256MB of RAM, 3.5mm headset jack, and a microSD card slot with hot swap support. Moreover, there’s mobile TV capability which is enabled with an awkward lookin’ external antenna.

All in all, the Nokia N801T is a mid-range smartphone that will most likely cost about $200 or maybe less. Unfortunately, the Finnish company hasn’t mentioned neither the price nor the release date. As far as we know, it could be out any day now though I guess that’s the decision China Mobile will made rather than Nokia…

Finally, before I let you go, here’s another image of the phone with its external antenna.

Earlier this month we saw leaked images of an as yet to be announced Motorola Android smartphone called the MT917. We called it the “Chinese RAZR” since it looked a lot like the RAZR we saw announced here in America, but it had a custom TD-SCDMA 3G radio that only works in China. Well today Motorola officially announced the MT917, and we’re frankly shocked that it isn’t the model that ended up being sold on Verizon. First key difference between the MT917 and the Droid RAZR, the screen. Whereas the RAZR has a 4.3 inch 960 x 540 pixel display, the MT917 does 1280 x 720 pixels on an even larger 4.5 inch panel. Next is the camera, which is just 8 megapixels on the RAZR, but an insane 13 megapixels on the MT917. Now yes, the MT917 is 8.5 mm thick versus 7.1 mm for the RAZR, but if that bothers you then … we don’t know what to tell you to make you happy. Everything else is the same: Android 2.3, 1 GB of RAM, etc.

The question on our mind is when will this beast of a superphone ever leave China, and if it does then will it be updated to run Ice Cream Sandwich, thus eliminating the need for the (now dated looking) dedicated Android buttons on the bottom of the device? We’re a sucker for high end specs, and the MT917 ticks nearly every box on our wishlist. The only thing that could make it better would be support for NFC, despite it being used by a small number of devices today.

What do you think, why would Motorola save their real flagship for China instead of launching it in America? And now that you know the MT917 exists, are questioning your decision to buy a RAZR this holiday season? Here’s hoping we’ll hear more about the American version of this thing at either CES or MWC in early 2012!

The American handset maker will also have a version of the device for China, marked as MT917. The American handset maker will also have a version of the device for China, marked as MT917. The upcoming phone will rock a TD-SCDMA radio, hinting us it’s heading to China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of number of subscribers.

However, the Chinese RAZR will come with slightly changed design, featuring rounded edges. Not sure why that’s the case, though.

Aside from the mentioned 3G radio, the rest of MT917′s specs will remain the same (when compared to the original RAZR) and include an 8-megapixel camera on the back, 4.3-inch qHD (540×960 pixels) touchscreen, and the ultra-slim body with Kevlar fiber on the back.

Release date is unknown and so is the price. We do know you won’t be able to grab this baby outside of China, and honestly – you don’t want to since that TD-SCDMA radio is useless elsewhere…
