Bell to Join the Android Party with Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy Bell Bell to Join the Android Party with Samsung GalaxyBell’s inagural HSPA lineup had lots of new toys, but telus (NYSE: TU) was drawing a bit more attention with the HTC Hero. Luckily for Bell, Android will be one less leg-up the competition will have, as they’re getting the Samsung Galaxy I7500, according to this promotional poster. The Galaxy has been traipsing around Europe since launching over the summer, and boasts a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage, 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, and Wi-Fi; no custom work on the user interface, it’s straight vanilla Android. Samsung has already provided the Impact and omnia II for Bell’s HSPA grand opening, but the Galaxy is really the icing on the cake. No word on a release date, but I think it’s safe to expect the I7500 in time for the holidays.

Super low-end Motorola i410 lands at Boost Mobile

Motorola i410

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) i410, which we saw at the FCC roughly a month ago, has been officially announced and it’s heading to Sprint (NYSE: S)-owned Boost Mobile. As it’s usually the case with iDEN phones, specs won’t impress many, and the same is true for the phone’s design. To be fair, that keyboard kinda reminds me on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N93, a phone that I had for a year and loved it. However, i410’s specs are far from the N93’s, which actually is an S60 smartphone.

The Moto i410 comes with two screens (96×32-pixel external and 128×160-pixel internal), Bluetooth, push-to-talk functionality, speakerphone, and that’s about it. No camera, no microSD card slot. It’s a super basic phone for those who need to text and call someone from time to time, and eventually rely on the walkie-talkie service (PTT) for some reason…

AT&T: Stop telling the American people that net neutrality is a good thing

JIM AT&T: Stop telling the American people that net neutrality is a good thing

AT&T’s Chief Lobbyist, Jim Cicconi, is pissed that Andrew McLaughlin, the White House Chief Technology Officer, said this regarding China’s censorship of the internet and how companies in the USA are treating their networks:

“If it bothers you that the China government does it, it should bother you when your cable company does it.”

Jim says that Andrew’s comments are “ill-considered and inflammatory” and that:

“It is deeply disturbing when someone in a position of authority, like Mr. McLaughlin, is so intent on advancing his argument for regulation that he equates the outright censorship decisions of a communist government to the network congestion decisions of an American ISP. There is no valid comparison, and it’s frankly an affront to suggest otherwise.”

That pretty much sums up AT&T. They pay this Jim dude to pester people in Washingston all day to make sure that the law is favorable to the company’s bottom line. They’re not even ashamed to admit it, the man’s title is “Chief Lobbyist”, implying that there are many more serving under him.

How about this AT&T:

  1. Fire all your lobbyists and spend the salaries of those fired lobbyists on actually improving your network
  2. Change your business model for wireless data so that it respects the law and doesn’t impact profits too negatively
  3. Stop suing people who talk smack about your network

Brainstorm that shit out and get back to me later kthxbye!

Snaps of the Upcoming TELUS LG IQ

LG IQ1 Snaps of the Upcoming TELUS LG IQ

Earlier this month you may recall the TELUS LG IQ making a cameo in a Best Buy mobile ad. The device that was once a bit of a mystery is starting to come out into the light, today in the form of a few spy shots.

The IQ features a 3.2″ touchscreen, 5.0MP camera with video, and a full and somewhat luxurious slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The IQ will be TELUS (NYSE: TU)’ first device to offer Windows Mobile 6.5… I can’t imagine there being much (if any) demand for Win-Mo, but good on TELUS for mixing it up a bit here.

I’m by no means a Windows Mobile fan, but I’d sure like to get my hands on this bad boy… I’ll see what I can do… :)

Apple Unloads Both Barrels into Verizon’s Inability to do Data/Voice Simultaneously

By Simon Sage on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 8:36 AM PST
In Apple, Marketing, Verizon

So, you might have noticed how Verizon (NYSE: VZ) commercials might have sort of, kind of, maybe been taking some potshots at the iPhone. As we all know, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) can sling some mud with the best of them, and just launched these two ads that show just how darned handy it is to use voice and data simultaneously.

Son, you just got served. Actually, even though it’s fair game right now, simultaneous voice and data will be a moot points once LTE rolls around. It’s also maybe not such a smart move to be bashing on Verizon if Apple hopes to be using their network at some point, although the same could be said for VZW. One way or the other, Apple really shouldn’t be bragging about AT&T (NYSE: T)’s network, even with it’s data/voice capability. What do you guys think of the ads?

A quick OS update for the BlackBerry Bold 9000 users out there. No, it’s not 5.0, but this release does bring us up to 4.6.0.307. You can nab the update here. This update is official, and comes to us from the SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) download site. If you could really care less, then hmmphhh… you might as well wait for 5.0, right?

If you do proceed, make sure you backup your device and take all necessary precautions. Even though this is an official release, sometimes things do go fubar with updates. Again, you can nab OS 4.6.0.307 for the Bold 9000 right here.

Note: On the download page, hit the dropdown and select ‘BlackBerry Bold (TM) 9000 smartphone’ to proceed.

Nokia N86 Finds its Way to Rogers: $99.99 On Contract

Nokia N86 Rogers Nokia N86 Finds its Way to Rogers: $99.99 On ContractAs promised, the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N86 is now available at Rogers (NYSE: RCI) for $99.99 on a three-year contract after rebates. That price point is a sweet spot for a handset with an impressive 8 megapixel camera, full-bodied smartphone OS, and a form factor that still appeals to the feature phone crowd. Rogers is really going to have to bring it with their holiday lineup if they’re hoping to compete with the impressive selection Bell and telus are offering thanks to their shiny new HSPA networks. If Rogers’ “webphones” campaign pimping out the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) X1, LG Eve, BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9000, and the HTC Magic is their big holiday push, it’s clear they’re more interested in beating competitors on pricing rather than highest-end hardware. Interesting strategy – we’ll see if it pays off. You can pick up the Rogers N86 online right now, or check out our review before taking the plunge.
