Telecom Italia doing purchase via Mobile from 2010

Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) and Movincom, the Italian consortium of companies and service providers for the promotion of mobile retailing, have signed an agreement that will let Telecom Italia’s customers use their mobile phones to purchase a wide range of goods and services via Movincom. Starting in 2010, Telecom Italia will be building in an ad hoc application into its new Sim cards. Using this application, directly from their mobile phones, customers will be able to buy tickets for public transport and trains, pay for parking, purchase ski passes, buy tickets for a night out at the theatre or other events, and book hotel rooms.

Payment for these services will make use of methods offered by banks who sign up to the venture.

Using a SAT (SIM Application Toolkit) technology solution developed by Telecom Italia, this mobile commerce solution ensures high standards of security and authenticates the phone number from which each transaction originates. Specific menus integrated directly into the Sim card will guide customers through the process and make it quick and easy to make purchases. Orders placed for goods or services are dispatched by a text message generated automatically by the application. The text message features the purchaser’s cellphone number but no sensitive data about the selected method of payment.

The configuration-free service will be available on all mobile phones. It will be possible to update the service at any time, as and when new goods and services are added.

The Movincom Consortium currently has more than 650 operational services on board, a figure that is destined to rise to over 1,500 services in seven different market sectors.

“After becoming an indispensable personal communications tool,” says Oscar Cicchetti, Manager of Telecom Italia’s Domestic Market Operations, “the mobile phone is transitioning into a personal gateway to the internet, content and services, ranging from information to entertainment and professional applications. Leveraging the potential of the latest SIM cards and terminals, mobile phones are poised to become a powerful and secure transactions and identity management tool too. Today’s agreement paves the way for this by offering a broad range of services and a secure, straightforward and intuitive method for making purchases.”

“We know that security and a user-friendly purchase experience are vital to the development of mobile commerce via mobile phones. This agreement with Telecom Italia is a major step in that direction,” says Enrico Sponza, Deputy Chairman of the Movincom Consortium. “Banks will have access to an integrated set of operational processes and be able to fast track their entry into the mobile payment business.”

This should be a successful solution all-round, because it does the key thing for service delivery – takes end-to-end control of the user experience, encompassing (in this case) device, network, and service provider(s).

Telecom Italia is the latest carrier that has signed to offer Nokia Messaging

…And Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has a new partner for its Nokia Messaging scheme – Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI). Starting from the middle of September, the Italian company will offer its customers the Finnish giant’s push-email service along with dedicated service plans.

For instance, with the so called MAXXI Mail plan, TIM customers get 1 GB of storage a month to check their email while on the move at a cost of EUR 4 per month. The offer is valid for both those customers who choose the top-up option, as well as the ones who have a contract. In addition, there will be other plans specially designed for business customers.

Again, with the Nokia Messaging application installed, users can check their email from various webmail providers (Yahoo, Google (NSDQ: GOOG), HotMail, etc), as well as country-specific accounts such as alice.it, TIN.it and virgilio.it. In total, users can have up to ten personal email accounts pushed directly to their Nokia device…

Telecom Italia ordered to sell its assets in Argentina

In an effort to spur competition, Argentine anti-trust authorities ordered Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) to sell its telephone holdings in the country to prevent Spain’s Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) from dominating the local market. More specifically, the Italian company has been given one year to sell its 50% stake in Sofora, the holding company that controls Telecom Argentina.

According to the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (CNDC), Telefonica has assumed a “dominant position” in the market, noting that the Spanish group controls Telefonica Argentina and through its stake in Telecom Italia, also has an indirect stake in rival operator Telecom Argentina.

Of course, Telecom Italia denied that Telefonica’s minority stake in the telco consortium — which in turn owns 24.5% of the Italian company — has no impact on the Argentine market…

Telecom Italia launches 28Mbps mobile broadband service in Milan

Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) has launched the first city-wide mobile broadband service offering peak speeds of 28 Mbps/s in download and 5.8 Mbps/s in upload. The service has launched in Milan, and is set to hit Rome in October.

Ericsson provided the equipment for the network upgrade, which [network] BTW is based on MIMO technology (Multiple Input and Multiple Output). Mentioned solution relies on two radio antennas at the same time to transmit data to a single consumer, making such high speeds possible.

After the two major cities, Telecom Italia plans to offer the upgraded mobile broadband service at national level. That’s, of course, until they start rolling out LTE network, which is also being made in partnership with Ericsson.

Italy’s TIM to offer the Nokia N97 for 599 EUR

Adding the HTC Magic is obviously not enough for Italy’s TIM. They decided to follow the footsteps of Vodafone by including the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N97 in their offering, too. The problem, however, is the price — HTC Magic will be available for 449 EUR, while Nokia’s flagship device will be sold for whooping 150 EUR more. If we would compare the two devices in an “apples to apples” manner, that would mean that QWERTY keyboard costs 150 EUR, which is kinda ridiculous. On the other hand, we’re talking about two different platforms, each having its loyal followers.

Finally, I’m guessing the current steep price is for hard-core Nokia fanboys and will go down with the time. We’ll see…

Italy’s TIM to offer HTC Magic, too

Aside from offering the first Android handset, HTC Dream aka T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1, Italy’s TIM will be adding the second one as well. Of course, we’re talking about the all-touchscreen HTC Magic, which is set to hit the operator’s portfolio in the coming days or weeks. The exact release date is unknown, but we do have the price. It’s 449 EUR, which is about $595. It’s kinda steep, but I guess that’s the price without any contract signing activities, though you’ll certainly want some data plan with this baby, right?

Telecom Italia to get 28 Mbps mobile broadband powered by Ericsson

Good news for our readers from Italy. The leading telecom company in the country, Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI), along with Ericsson have already started deploying a new mobile network technology of 28 Mbps speeds in early 2009. The deployment will include the so called MIMO (Multiple Input and Multiple Output) technology and Milan will be the first Italian “ultra-broadband city,” enjoying speeds of up to 28 Mbps in download and 5.8 Mbps in upload.

From the official release:

Telecom Italia will be first in Italy to deploy live mobile broadband speeds of 28 Mbps with Ericsson’s mobile network technology. Tests in Telecom Italia’s mobile network will start early 2009 and initial deployment is planned in the city of Milan in June 2009. National coverage will follow in the second half of 2009.

As expected, not every part of the city/country will be able to use the maximum speeds. Actual download speeds can be less and will vary due to congestion, distance from the cell, local conditions, hardware, software and other factors. Still, it’s good to see these things rolling out.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip going live in Brazil

TIM has announced the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 8220 for Brazil, but without any pricing or dates, unfortunately. TIM has already released the Pearl Flip in Italy, so it’s only a matter of time before the 8220 reaches satellites in Brazil and Turkey. It was a little curious to see the site previously calling the 8220 the Kickstart (even though I totally love that name over the Pearl Flip), and their store image watermarked with “CONFIDENTIAL”. It sounds like these guys are getting most of their info from us bloggers.

TIM launches LG Tribe aka KS360; Italian SMS addicts rejoice!

TIM has scored an exclusive deal with LG to launch the LG KS360 Messenger phone in Italy, which they are offering as the LG Tribe. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard equipped feature phone is targeted towards “generation Web 2.0,” and among other things also packs a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, 2 megapixel camera, media player, FM radio, Bluetooth, 15MB of internal memory that is further expandable with microSD memory cards.

And that’s about all we can say about this phone. Lack of 3G may kill the deal for many, but for staying in touch with your buddies on the go – it provides a solid bang for the buck. And while we’re talking about pricing, TIM is offering the Tribe for 149 EUR with a contract, which also includes a Windows Live Messenger service that’s free for two months. Afterwards, it costs 3 to 6 EUR a month for continued access…

Samsung C6620 Windows Mobile smartphone launched in Italy; Approved by FCC

Samsung is launching a new Windows Mobile smartphone in Italy called Samsung C6620. From what we can tell, the BlackJack-like handset comes with an improved QWERTY keyboard with buttons looking like those found on Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71 or Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Treo, which make typing way more convenient. Or at least, that’s my experience.

Specs wise, there’s a tri-band GSM/GPRS radio (900/1800/1900 MHz) on board, QVGA non-touchscreen, 3G (HSDPA), 2 megapixel camera, 20 MB of internal memory that is further expandable with memory cards. Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard edition is running the show. Lack of WiFi and GPS may be a dealbreaker for many, myself included.

In Italy, TIM is selling the Samsung C6620 in “Wine Red,” “Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) Green” and “Navy Blue” for 199 EUR with a contract. We’ve no idea when nor whether the new Samsung smartphone will start selling in the U.S. The FCC approval is there, but that doesn’t mean much…

BlackBerry Pearl Flip launches first in Italy

After lots of talk about T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) and Rogers (NYSE: RCI) releasing the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 8220, it turns out that TIM, across the pond in Italy, actually got the BlackBerry Pearl Flip first. Our buddy Stefano actually went to the launch event about two weeks ago, so it’s not entirely a surprise. It’ll be going for 269 € (around $396) presumably before contract. Even if you’re about to jump on the BlackBerry 8220 (and we don’t know many who would be), you probably want to shelf your international shipping and unlocking schemes – it won’t be long before T-Mobile and Rogers has this one available too.

BenQ launches S6 with TIM

The BenQ S6 Mobile Internet Device

I don’t mean that BenQ used a person called Tim to launch the S6 (though they may have had someone of that name working on the launch), no, no, no – BenQ have launched the Mobile Internet Device called the S6 with Italian Operator TIM!

There is an Intel Atom processor inside, along with 4.8″ screen, and 370g of weight to account for. 3.5G and WLAN radios are onboard for InterWeb access, and Bluetooth even makes an appearance!

Apparently the cost will be 429 EUR, which isn’t too harsh, although it is going to have to compete with the increasingly popular netbooks at that price point.

TIM to announce 3G iPhone on Monday or Tuesday?

Reuters is reporting that Italian carrier TIM will announce the 3G iPhone on Monday or Tuesday. And while we would like to believe that true — and considering WWDC starts on Monday it makes perfect sense — we still must post this under our “Rumors” section. Until we hear anything official from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) or Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) (owner of TIM), that’s the way it must go.

The problem, though, is in the face we still haven’t seen Apple pushing its 3G baby through FCC. Not that it’s required for launching a device in Europe, but that’s kinda way it goes (at least with other handset makers). Conspiracy theorists may opt for an idea that Apple somehow managed to make FCC’s process non-transparent, because of all trade secrets…

Anyway, if Jobs doesn’t unveil the 3G iPhone at the WWDC, I’m sure many will be disappointed. Hopefully, that won’t be the case…

Who doesn’t love the Italian gusto that goes in to every Ducati motorcycle’s design? Ducati exudes a sense of passion and style that bikers the world over envy. There’s only the small issue of the higher price point that keeps a Ducati out of practical reach for many.

While a Ducati is pretty much the cheapest way to lay claim to an Italian-made motor vehicle, it’s not cheap by any means. But, that doesn’t mean that the average Joe-bike-rider can’t get their hands on some official Ducati-designed gear on the (relatively) cheap.

The Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) Z770 Ducati edition brings the style and feel of Ducati’s motoring tradition in a more affordable handset. All gussied up in a Ducati-designed red and black paint-job, this Sony Ericsson Z770 flip-phone sports Ducati-branding. The handset comes with an HBH DS-220 based Ducati Bluetooth headset to match the trick color-scheme of the SE Z770.

Unfortunately for Ducati-fans in The States, the Sony Ericsson Z770 only supports tri-band (900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM. But, if tri-band works well in your corner of the world, the SE Z770 should serve up data through its web browser at UMTS/HSDPA speeds.

Sony Ericsson plans to bring the SE Z770’s Italian gusto to TIM in June.

TIM bringing the BlackBerry Bold to Italy in July; Wants to rename it to Goldfinger?

Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) Mobile (TIM) will reportedly introduce the recently announced BlackBerry Bold 9000 in Italy during the second week of July. Apparently, the best BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) to date will carry a hefty price tag, between 450 and 500 EUR. That’s a lot, but I guess the price will go down for business users who spend 100+ EUR a month on their phone bills.

And now the fan part. According to BB World’s sources, TIM may actually rebrand the Bold as Goldfinger! You read that correctly, it seems Bold doesn’t sound that good for Italian business folks. Goldfinger on the other hand, well, let’s just say carries a good 007 memories with it. This is unconfirmed, but let’s say it happens, how will they call the upcoming BlackBerry Thunder? Boy Genius suggests “BlackBerry Octopussy” and I like that. Still, if the price doesn’t move bellow 450 EUR, users may get their BlackBerries “another day.” Or on the other hand, heavy users may get a substantial discount and decide that a single BlackBerry “is not enough.”

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) to offer Apple iPhone in Italy

Italy’s going to have some competitive iPhone sales later this year. With Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) already on-board to bring the 3G iPhone to Italy as part of a 10-country iPhone launch, the juggernaut wireless provider is an iPhone-force to be reckoned with. But, that’s not going to stop smaller Italian carrier Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) Movil (TIM) from giving it their best shot with an Italian iPhone offering of their very own.

TIM has announced that it “has signed a deal with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year.” There’s no mention of whether TIM’s Apple iPhone will be the current-generation iPhone or the next-generation iPhone capable of 3G network data speeds. Previous speculation has hinted at TIM launching the 3G iPhone without contract or network-lock. We can’t wait to see if Apple will indeed let TIM launch an unlocked 3G iPhone alongside Vodafone’s offering…

3G iPhone rumored for Italy without contract and unlocked?

The 3G iPhone launch has media outlets the world over buzzing over what the next-generation iPhone will look like and where it will be launched. The latest report comes from Italian language La Repubblica, and indicates that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) Mobile (TIM) have already signed a deal to bring the 3G iPhone to Italy. Franco Bernabè, CEO Telecom Italia, apparently made the trip out to Cupertino to meet with Steve Jobs and ink said deal.

More interesting is the speculation that the Italian 3G iPhone could break the mold and could be offered without contract or carrier lock. Apple has demanded revenue sharing agreements and on-contract, carrier exclusivity from all iPhone partners (with the exception of France), but this new deal represents a stark departure from Apple’s business model for the iPhone.

The deal is said to provide TIM with a 3-month exclusivity window on the 3G iPhone. And, Apple will reportedly allow the 3G iPhone to be sold unlocked, contract-free. The next-generation iPhone will be sold at a higher price than anywhere else in Europe.

Apple will likely maintain its revenue-sharing and carrier-lock policy with its 3G iPhone in other parts of the world. However, TIM could prove to be the sole source of unlocked and 3G iPhones – at a premium, of course.

Modu: the phone with many coats!

You might remember a little while back that Dusan posted about us being teased by the Modu, and we were wondering what it is – well now we know….

At the heart of it is a tiny monoblock Mobile phone (get a picture of a Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) W880i in your head, but smaller), which can be inserted in a number of jackets (see pic above), or, into ‘Modu mates’ (please note: I did NOT say inserted in to your mates – that would harsh, painful, and largely unnecessary) The ‘mates’ are apparently Modu-enabled consumer electronics devices, and from the video, you could logically assume these were things such as a Sat Nav etc. In fact, there is a broader spread, and big names like Blaupunkt have signed up to create interworking devices.

The first MNOs to sign up for this are TIM (Italy), Beeline (Russia), and Cellcom in Israel – quite an eclectic bunch!

Ben’s take: So my thoughts on this are two-fold – having worked previously for a handset vendor that came up with the idea of changeable panels/fascias on devices, I know what might seem like a GREAT idea in Marketing, actually does not translate at all well practically – getting the panels/fascia/jackets in to the market widely, and the resulting punt you are taking financially, are major issues and risks, respectively.

On top of that, I remember from 3GSM a few years back a company called IXI, who had a Bluetooth gateway – essentially a good idea where you put the subscriber SIM in the gateway, and then have cheaper, simpler devices that connect via BT to it, such as a phone, PDA, etc.

Why do I mention these, you ask? Because Modu strikes me as a mashup of them both – changeable faceplates, and changeable devices – powered by a central component – whilst I don’t think either of the solutions I mentioned have gained what could be considered ‘mass acceptance’, Modu might just have that momentum. They have OpCos signed up, they have the consumer electronics manufacturers signing up – this could be a flyer. Stay tuned!

February iPhone rumors point to Spain, Italy, Switzerland getting Apple iPhone

With Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) already having penetrated the European market in Germany, France, and the UK, it makes sense that Apple start casting a wider iPhone-net in Europe. And, it seems that Apple may just be in talks with a few more potential iPhone-partners.

Spain’s El Periodico has announced that the country’s Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) wireless network has been tapped by His Jobness to bring the iPhone to the country of tapas and high-quality leather. The new iPhone partnership is rumored to be announced at Mobile World Congress in Spain later this month.

Macity also chimed in on the issue and speculates that Apple has already decided to bring the iPhone to Italy’s Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) Mobile. It seems that the newest iPhone firmware has a telling piece of code embedded within – the firmware has revealed carrier bundle titled “TIM_Italy.bundle.”

And, lastly, the iPhone could make its way to Switzerland’s Swisscom. Le Temps reports that internal sources have confirmed Apple’s intention to go with Swisscom as the Swiss iPhone carrier.

We’ll likely know more at the end-all-be-all of mobile conventions in a coupe weeks. Stay tuned!

Thoughts on Mobile TV – today…. Devices!

Following from my post yesterday about the multiple Mobile TV standards, today I thought we might take a short tour de force of Mobile TV handsets – with specific reference to the DVB-H standard….

In my work, I am lucky enough to spend time researching DVB-H Mobile TV, and (critically) the devices that support it – as we know most people are quite attached to specific Mobile device manufacturers, so it’s interesting to see who from the ‘Big Five’ vendors appears in the list. Where possible I have added the networks these devices are sold in to:

Brionvega N7100 (manufactured by ZTE) – at TIM Italy
Gigabyte g600t
LG U900 – at 3 Italia
LG U950 – at Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) Italy
LG U960 – at 3 Italia
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N92

(Please note: this is not an exhaustive list)

What is interesting here is to see the prevalence of three companies – LG, Nokia, and Samsung. Both LG and Samsung are Korean, and as a result are not just capable with the DVB-H standard, but others such as T-DMB. In fact, LG just announced their own ’standard’ for America! Nokia, on the other hand, is from our European contingent.

There is also another division between Nokia, and the LG/Samsung camp, and that is the ‘type’ of DVB-H that they are using – at which point you are probably thinking “so, there is splintering within even one standard?!” Answer: yep.

Samsung and LG have both deployed in Italy ( probably one of the leading countries globally in terms of mature DVB-H services) – and launched with DVB-IPDC variant handsets, whereas Nokia favours DVB-H BCAST - ultimately IPDC will fold in to BCAST, but nonetheless, it does somewhat affect how the handsets function.

With IPDC, the handsets have to be deployed with CAS (conditional access system) in the DVB-H middleware, to enable the handset to decrypt the incoming signals. With BCAST SCP (smart card profile), the reliance on the device is removed somewhat, and the focus becomes not so much on decryption, but on content protection (using standardised DRM).

But what of the handsets themselves? Are they big, do they look nice, do they work well? I suppose that depends on the kind of requirements you have… all of the handsets above could be regarded as somewhat ‘chunky’, and several include a screen flip or swivel to switch from traditional mobile ‘portrait’ usage, to the ‘landscape’ we associate with television.

Some you can argue are more aesthetically pleasing than others, but of course all suffer from that age-old question of how you manage battery drain with a function that lights the screen up brightly, and turns on one of the radios in the device fully.
