Virgin Mobile announced that it will start throttling its smartphone customers that use the most data per month beginning March 23.

Throttling, in case you aren’t familiar with the word (by now, you probably are), means Virgin Mobile will slow down your Internet speeds to avoid overcrowding its network. Indeed, Virgin Mobile claims the change is “to make sure we can keep offering our Beyond Talk Plans at such great prices.” That’s PR-talk for “Hey, we’re trying here.”

Most Virgin Mobile customers won’t be affected by the throttling, however. The carrier will only flip the switch on lower data speeds for customers that use over 2.5GB of data per month and Virgin Mobile says that’s less than 3 percent of its customer base. If you are impacted, Virgin Mobile will send you a text message warning you that you’ve passed 2.5GB of data and to prepare to crawl through the rest of the month.

So, just how slow will the Internet connection get once the throttling begins? Data speeds will drop to 256Kbps or lower. Ouch.

Virgin Mobile originally planned to start throttling its smartphone users in October 2011, so heavy users should be pleased with the delay. Throttling will officially start on March 23rd, which is more than enough time to check your monthly usage and determine if you need to make any adjustments.

The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus has finally sailed onto North American shores, but alas, it’s not in the United States just yet. As of today, it’s on sale through Bell or Virgin Mobile in Canada.

The Galaxy Nexus is selling for $159.99 on Virgin Mobile, or if you are looking to save four pennies during these tough economic times, the Galaxy Nexus is just $159.95 on Bell. Both carriers require three-year contracts to get access to these prices. The smartphone is also available without a contract but be prepared to fork over $649.99 to truly call it yours.

For those of us in America, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to start unwrapping that delicious Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s plenty of rumors floating around about release dates though. At first it was December 11th, then it was (tomorrow) December 9th, and now neither of those dates seem likely. One thing we do know: it will cost a steep $299.99 on a two-year contract.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus sports an enormous 4.65-inch display and is the first phone to ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We reviewed it a little over a week ago and it’s quite an impressive device.

It’s the Android phone to get if you can actually get it, and now, the lucky folks in Canada can.

Virgin Mobile, the American prepaid operator that offers unlimited everything plans for just $55 per month, will soon introduce a pair of Android smartphones to the market according to PocketNow. Starting with the Chaser (pictured below, right), it’s assumed that it’s nothing more than a rebranded ZTE X500, meaning it’ll have a pitifully slow 600 MHz processor, 3.5 inch screen, and 3.2 megapixel camera.

Virgin Mobile, the American prepaid operator that offers unlimited everything plans for just $55 per month, will soon introduce a pair of Android smartphones to the market according to PocketNow. They say that the two devices in question are manufactured by Chinese handset vendor ZTE and will be known as the Chaser and the Venture. Starting with the Chaser (pictured below, right), it’s assumed that it’s nothing more than a rebranded ZTE X500, meaning it’ll have a pitifully slow 600 MHz processor, 3.5 inch screen, and 3.2 megapixel camera. Still, if it’s priced right then the low end specs shouldn’t matter all too much. Next up is the Venture and it’s unique because it comes in a BlackBerry style QWERTY form factor. Not too many Android devices do that these days. It’s set to have the same specs as the Chase, except that the screen will measure just 2.8 inches across.

If you’re considering going prepaid, then you should look at your options. Virgin Mobile also sells a device called the Triumph that for all intents and purposes is a Verizon Wireless Motrola Droid X, but a tiny bit smaller. That’s a better choice than either of these two ZTE devices. Then on Boost Mobile you’ve got the ZTE Warp, which is … not really exciting. If you decide to go with either H2O Wireless or Simple Mobile, then that’s where things get interesting. They don’t sell devices, just SIM cards, so you can buy something unlocked like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus S for about $270 used, shove your SIM in there, and boom, have one of the best devices on the market with a cheap month to month plan. The Nexus S will also get the next version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, pretty soon.

Why buy something new and slow when you can go used and awesome? Do your homework!

The new initiative builds on similar program Sprint has had in place for its postpaid customers since 2003. The company has a strong corporate reputation for working with various branches of the armed services and has been widely recognized for this strong commitment with multiple awards for being a military-friendly employer…
