Vodafone to Announce Linux-Powered 360 by Samsung?

By Simon Sage on Thursday, September 10th, 2009 at 1:22 PM PST
In Linux, Samsung, Vodafone

Vodafone Limo7 300x479 Vodafone to Announce Linux Powered 360 by Samsung? What do we have here? A new Samsung handset packing an 8 megapixel camera and OLED screen running on LIMO? Apparently there’s no official name set, but I think 360 might be a fair bet. Rumour has it Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) will be launching a service called “Vodafone People” which will help you stay connected to various social networks and somehow work with location-based info. Apparently this has something to do with Vodafone’s acquisition of Zyb, so you’ll likely be able to backup contact info, restore from the cloud, and do all sorts of other neat stuff with the address book. Details are vague, but you can get a rough idea about what’s happening in the screenshots below. If you’re interested in hearing more, an announcement might be made on September 24th., so mark your calendars.

t mobile logo2 UK: T Mobile for sale rumours continue

So who IS going to buy T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) UK?
Well according to Mobile News, it could be any of the following: Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), France Telecom (Orange), or Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) (O2 (NYSE: TEF))!
Mobile News reports on a story that surfaced in The Financial Times, stating that three companies listed above have all shown interest in subsuming T-Mob. Of course, there could be some serious regulatory hurdles, as whoever inherited T-Mob’s subs would be in a commanding position in the UK market.
It is thought the sale could bring in around €4 billion, an not inconsequential sum for parent company Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT).

Vodafone First to bring new Windows Phone from LG to European Consumers

By Ben Robinson on Friday, September 4th, 2009 at 4:12 PM PST
In LG, Vodafone

Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and LG Electronics have announced the launch of the LG GM750, a new device based on Windows Mobile 6.5 from 6 October.
With LG’s S-Class user-interface and fast internet browsing via Vodafone’s high-speed mobile broadband network or WiFi, information is always at the user’s fingertips. Its large 3.0″ full touchscreen makes it easy to navigate while browsing the internet, writing text messages and memos, or getting directions with its in-built GPS navigation function.
The intuitive user-interface on Windows Mobile 6.5 is easily customisable so Vodafone customers can personalise their phone to their own particular style. Using 3rd party applications, customers can change the look and feel with a personal background or designer themes and personalise the home screen so the information they need, such as weather reports, the latest traffic information or stock prices, is always easy to find. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Exchange ActiveSync email ensures you never need miss an email again, be it from your personal or work account. As one of a new generation of Windows phones, the GM750 Smartphone is poised to take advantage of future Vodafone services.
Hmmmm – so do we like? Well, everyone seems to be sticking their own UI layer on top of WinMo these days, even if (as in this case) it’s the latest cut with WinMo 6.5. LG can probably lay claim to doing it well, as they seem to have a relatively well-defined UI strategy, but as per usual, the proof of the pudding will be in the tasting – or rather the touching in this case (in an entirely appropriate manner, of course!).
The LG GM750 will be available in store initially in seven countries – Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK, and also in France through SFR, with further countries following soon after.

BlackBerry Storm’s A-Brewin’ For Verizon and Vodafone

BlackBerry 9550 VZPress 300x300 BlackBerry Storms A Brewin For Verizon and VodafoneBetween this high-resolution press graphic of the Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Storm 2, SKUs for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 9550 accessories popping up in Vodafone (NYSE: VOD)’s database, and all of these hands-on videos making the rounds, it’s clear that the Storm 2 is getting ready for primetime.  Previous indications suggested a late Semptember launch date for RIM’s next SurePress smartphone, although there’s still a lot of contention surrounding how the new “TruePress” screen will handle. Apparently it’s possible to turn the clicking mechanism on and off, but specifics are still skimpy. Regardless, it will be exciting to see whether or not the Storm 2 can redeem the family name.

UK: Vodafone does Free Friday (for Internet and Email)

vodafone free friday UK: Vodafone does Free Friday (for Internet and Email)

Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) UK has decided that this Friday is going to be a ‘Free Friday’ for Internet and Email access, and that the usual 50p daily flat rate will be waived.
The 50p usual rate applies to both Pre-paid and Post-pay users (those without free internet packs on their tariff), and isn’t the biggest saving in the world – but it’s better than a slap in the face :-)

Ireland: Competition Authority approves BT & Vodafone co-op

By Ben Robinson on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at 12:14 PM PST
In BT, Vodafone

BT and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced they got approval from the Irish Competition Authority for their plans, which essentially are the BT moves its customer base to Voda, and at the same time provides ‘wholesale network services’ to Voda for 7 years.
Interestingly, and perhaps not obviously, Vodafone is actually the number 2 player in the Irish fixed line broadband market, so there are clear strategic wins for both companies in the deal.
It’s looking like BT will target businesses and the public sector with their network IT services, and allow Vodafone to focus on consumers – creating a clear, yet workable, separation of the market segments they are going to target.
The line between fixed, mobile, and service operators is blurring, and we are going to see a lot more of this over the coming couple of years…
