Halliburton dumps BlackBerry, starts distributing iPhones to workers

One of the world’s largest oilfield companies, Halliburton, publicly acknowledged its decision to stop giving workers BlackBerrys and start equipping them with iPhones. This is a gigantic blow to Research in Motion because the BlackBerry has for a very long time been widely considered the best phone for enterprise users. Halliburton obviously disagrees and so will many other companies if RIM doesn’t step its game up in time. Spokesperson for Halliburton, Tara Mullee Agard, said to Reuters in an email, “We are making this transition in order to better support our Read more

Volkswagen turns off BlackBerry e-mail service overnight

If you work at Volkswagen in Germany, your BlackBerry e-mail starts coming in 30 minutes before your shift, and 30 minutes after, thanks to a new union agreement. Senior staff are exempt from the new rule, who likely need to be accessible around the clock, though standard phone functions will still be available for everybody during off-hours. This is a very progressive move, and shows how we might be able to reign in the always-connected lifestyle BlackBerry, and now smartphones at large, are promoting. The responsible thinking goes, “just because Read more

First look at BlackBerry App World for businesses and Work mode on the PlayBook

RIM had a short webcast today to talk about their new BlackBerry Mobile Fusion enterprise product, which will support Android and iOS devices, on top of their own next-gen BBX products. One nice little tidbit to emerge from the webcast that we didn’t hear anything about in this morning’s press release was support for a Work tab in BlackBerry App World and within the PlayBook OS. Here, company-issued BlackBerry PlayBooks (and eventually smartphones) will be able to access and download apps that have been given the go-ahead by the IT Read more

The enterprise market, where BlackBerry has traditionally reigned supreme, is now ruled by the iPhone according to recent reseach.
