Hands on Nokia E61i

Finally, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) decided to kill the joystick on the popular E61, and voila – the E61i was born. The new device is also bit thinner than the original, and has different button order – much better, I might add. As far as I see, it’s more than likely that the E61i will be a hit.

Openwave extends MIDAS, Mobile Browser Symbian smartphones

Openwave Systems Inc. announced that it has joined the Symbian Platinum Program to extend its Mobile Integrated Dynamic Application System (MIDAS), a mobile AJAX platform, and Openwave Mobile Browser, Mercury edition to the Symbian ecosystem.

MIDAS, a mobile AJAX platform designed to enable the creation, customization and deployment of powerful new network enabled applications and interfaces for mass market mobile phones, is part of the Openwave Mobile Phone Suite, which also includes the Openwave Mobile Browser, Mercury Edition. The Mercury edition browser enables increased access to Web content on mobile devices and a faster experience. The Openwave Mobile Browser, Mercury Edition increases access to Web content by expanding upon Openwave’s off-net browsing capabilities with new features such as scripting, AJAX compatibility and “Wide Screen” and “Map and Zoom” display modes.

Hands on MOTO RIZR Z8

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) certainly surprised many people (me included) with the announcement of its Symbian UIQ 3.1-based MOTO RIZR Z8. Renesas’ new processor adds Symbian OS 9.3 support

Renesas Technology Europe announced that NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM), Renesas Technology, Fujitsu (OTCPK: FJTSY), Mitsubishi Electric and Sharp are developing SH-Mobile G2 single chip 3G platform that will support Symbian OS v9.3.

RenesasAimed at high end 3G smartphones, the upgraded processors address the need for a standard OS platform for advanced applications, and also the increased demand for multimedia and additional applications in mobile phones. The platform offers a complete solution from Renesas embracing SH-Mobile G2, multimedia codecs, and Symbian OS v9.3.

The new platform is set to allow handset manufacturers and network operators to get the best and most differentiated phones to market faster, cheaper and more easily.

Telecom Italia to drive advanced mobile market growth with S60

Telecom Italia and S60Nokia announced a software collaboration with Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) to simplify service deployment through the platform-based model, help Telecom Italia in implementing their service convergence strategy and increase the amount of S60 devices in Telecom Italia’s portfolio.

Telecom Italia and S60 will work in close cooperation to support the advanced in-house service development in Telecom Italia and to enable a differentiated service offering across their portfolio.

The scope of the collaboration includes Telecom Italia’s access to extended capabilities of the S60 platform, joint marketing activities and close roadmap alignment to address Telecom Italia’s requirements on the development of S60 software.

Hands on Nokia 6110 Navigator

Another Symbian S60-powered device introduced during the 3GSM is Nokia 6110 Navigator which comes with built-in GPS and is set to deliver navigation and location based services to the mass market. The new 6110 Navigator is very slick and comes in the slider form factor. Here’s the video:
