IntoMobile Featured on BoxTone Prediction Panel at WES

At the big annual BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) show last week, WES 2009, I had the pleasure of sitting in with fellow bloggers from CIO, CrackBerry, Port3101 and BlackBerry Cool regarding what we thought would happen in the next three years in the wireless space. We each had distinctly different angles, so if you’ve got the half hour to kill, it’s worth a watch and to pitch in your two cents. My bit starts at 11:25, if you want to skip right ahead. I’m still dubious about Kevin’s claim that RIM would buy up Palm (NSDQ: PALM), but it makes for good conversation material. Big ups to BoxTone for the invite – we’re looking forward to participating in other events at shows in the future. Web-Based BlackBerry Widgets En Route

The most eye-catching of the many sessions at RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium was the introduction of BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) widgets, which are built entirely on web-based languages. This is the horn Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is busy tooting for WebOS, but RIM’s take will be a little different. They’re essentially working on a hybrid system which will allow developers to write apps entirely in JavaScript (and other web coding languages), but have them packaged in the BlackBerry operating system’s native Java. This makes a lower barrier for entry for developers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to work in Java, and could result in more efficiently-running apps since some of the heavy lifting will be left to the web. This will present a whole new class of applications in the BlackBerry App World, that is once devs get the tools for Eclipse and Visual Studio, which will be made available shortly.

As far as when you can get started on making your own BlackBerry widgets, it’s safe to assume we’ll see more details around the BlackBerry Developer Conference in November. For a closer look at Java widgets on BlackBerry, check the WES presentation slides.

RealPlayer Working on Mobile Video Conversion Software

RealPlayer had a booth at WES showing off a very handy utility that’s still in the works (and so no pics), but certainly worth a mention. Their desktop application chews through videos and compresses them to a mobile-friendly format for a variety of different platforms. Of course support for all the latest BlackBerrys was shown prominently, but the iPhone and Sidekick were also currently-available options, with more promised to be on the way. Real was tight-lipped about a release date, but the product was looking nicely polished, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the option built into RealPlayer soon.

Hands-On with Lenovo Constant Connect for BlackBerry

Lenovo (OTCPK: LNVGY)’s Constant Connect card was launched shortly before WES 2009, and while at the show, I got a chance to take a looksee for myself. The acessory basically plugs into a ThinkPad and lets your e-mails recieved by BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) get shunted right through to Outlook on your computer. The real genius here is that this functions even when the laptop’s off, so you can be cruising through an airport, counting on checking some e-mails while on the plane, and just have your BlackBerry and ThinkPad connected by Bluetooth. This only become possible because Lenovo started building the card ports with direct access to power, so a full boot-up isn’t necessary to run; since it’s still new, this feature is only available in their T400, T500, W500, X200, X200S and S200 models. Currently Constant Connect is available for $150 in the US, but should be hitting Canada and Europe in Q3, and Asia shortly thereafter. Next up, Lenovo is hoping to make a few more versions of the card for different-sized slots and squashing any bugs that creep up. It was cool to see Constant Connect in action – it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind accessory.

Hands-On with AT&T BlackBerry 8900

So, there was no BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) 9630 Niagara/Tour announcement at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium as we had all hoped, but AT&T (NYSE: T) was more than happy to show off their newest baby, the BlackBerry 8900 Curve. T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) may have already had it for a few months, but no doubt there will be plenty of folks married to AT&T by choice or otherwise who would appreciate the option. It should be out sometime this summer, but for a closer look at the hardware, take a look at our BlackBerry 8900 Curve Review. If you’re looking to get your thumbs all over this phone, after launch we’ll be giving away the freebie from AT&T’s excellent WES party with Kenny Loggins (whose “Danger Zone” from Top Gun goes through my head every time I take off in a plane).

Tether Your Mac with TetherBerry

I was dubious of TetherBerry at their initial launch, since their way of circumventing carrier tethering plans and policies could be a risk to subscribers violating terms of service, let alone the fact that tethering capabilities are already built into Windows and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) natively, but their latest update is most definitely worth a nod. Mac rarely gets any love from RIM in regards to this kind of stuff, but TetherBerry has stepped in and offered their solution for all the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) fanboys out there who want to cruise the internet using their BlackBerry’s data connection. It’s currently in open beta, and all you need is a light app on your Mac and another on your BlackBerry, and you’re good to go.

They’re working on Bluetooth next, then maybe hit up some other platforms (along with the necessary rebranding), but what I would like to see is a client for Ubuntu. I hear it’s a good OS for netbooks, but I would only get one if tethering via BlackBerry was an option. Right now it’s technically possible, but it’s a helluva lot harder to do than on Windows; if TetherBerry wants to play the “makes life simple” card, Linux would be where to play it. RIM Tantalizes with Wireless Presentation Solution

RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis coyly hinted at what was called the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Wireless Presentation solution in his day 1 keynote at WES 2009. In his brief mention, it was described as something that would display Powerpoint presentations right from your BlackBerry. There’s already a little something called ShowMate, but it’s a fairly awkward, hardware-based solution. I would hope the one Lazaridis is talking about here would involve some smooth Bluetooth pairing, failing that or hey, maybe even using some handheld pico projector.

Another mystery is, who’s making it? “Wireless Presentation Solution” is a name that reeks of the usual generality RIM puts on their earlier software before giving it something a little snazzier, but Mike mentioned it right after Vocera, a third party voice product for the medical sector, so it’s equally possible the Wireless Presentation Solution is being worked on by a separate software developer. A solution like this is a natural extension of the Documents to Go PowerPoint editing that’s currently available on BlackBerry, but it may be awhile before we get any more details…

IBM and SAP Partner up for Alloy – BlackBerry Business Flow Software

BlackBerry is, of course, an enterprise device first and foremost, and it’s a big focus of this year’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium. For the day 1 keynote, IBM General Manager Bob Picciano introduced a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) enterprise solution called Alloy, which was first announced back in January at their own annual show, Lotusphere. Alloy is essentially an app for managers who need to handle all that bureaucratic paperwork on the fly – that includes sending out reports, dealing with travel requests, fine tuning task assignments through SAP Workflow, granting leave requests through Lotus calendars and plenty more with a customizable options available. HP Introduces Friendlee – Location-Aware Social Networking for BlackBerry

HP had already made two official announcements at WES (CloudPrint and Operations Manager), but they also offered a sneak peek of what they’re working on next at yesterday’s keynote. Details were slim, but the long and short of their new app, Friendlee for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), is that it lets you get in touch with your closest contacts, know what their status is, and where they are.

By detecting who you interact with most frequently, Friendlee automatically populates your friends list. Simple twitter-style status messages means you can keep up on specifics; some of the examples they have here include “who do I call to fix the printer”, and “did you get the memo” shows HP is clearly gearing this towards enterprise. Profile awareness will also let you know what mode your contacts’ BlackBerry is in – no more taking it personally when they don’t answer your call, since you can see they just have it set to Silent. Knowing your contacts’ local time is also huge for international corporations who need to plan their correspondences carefully across time zones.

Friendlee also sports a kind of LinkedIn style of connections; you can browse through select contacts of your close contacts, enabling otherwise awkward second-degree links, and also a business reccomendation engine. You might remember your friend mentioning a great pizza place around the block, and by perusing his Friendlee profile, you could get further information on it.

It doesn’t look too far along, since they didn’t do much other than copy and paste an Android screenshot onto a Storm, but they were confident enough to show it at the biggest BlackBerry show of the year, so I’m sure it’s on the way. In the long run, HP is trying to reimagine the address book so instead of chewing through a list of rarely-used contacts, you’ll be focusing on the few people you talk to on a daily basis. 7digital to Offer DRM-Free Music to BlackBerry this Summer

DevelopIQ is getting in on the mobile music scene in a serious way at WES 2009 with 7digital. With a number of music licenses comparable to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), 7digital will offer DRM-free music downloaded over the air to BlackBerrys this summer. That alone is pretty sweet, but 7digital’s massive license library has attracted the attention of other players in the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) music sphere, and they’re working towards populating those other apps with their music library.

7digital’s app, though, is the slickest I’ve seen to date. It has two panes on the left and right that are summoned either by temporarily reprogrammed convenience keys, or by quick scrollball swipes. Gestures FTW. Beyond that, you can plug right into your BlackBerry Remote Stereo Gateway from the app and have all the same native music controls. Automatic syncing over Wi-Fi means no plugs, and you’ve got options when it comes to quality: over the cell network, they’ll send you a low-fidelity version which will automatically be replaced with the super-awesome one once you’re within Wi-Fi. I’m really looking forward to this app, especially if they can get it rolling in Canada as quickly after their U.S. and U.K as they say.

Vlingo Goes Premium, Adds a Few Features

Vlingo is my favourite hands-free app for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), bar none, and they’ve launched version 3.0 which now lets you send your transcribed messages without having to hit a key. There are some additional read-back functions but, sadly on the surface it looks like Vlingo is cutting features (sending transcribed e-mails and text messages to anyone) reserving them for their new $17.99 Vlingo Plus. Not to fret, though; you can still send those messages if your receiving contact also has the software, and the vast majority of Vlingo’s cool voice commands (tweeting, updating Facebook status, web searches, launching apps, etc.) are still intact in the free version. It’s been a nice free ride while it lasted, but if quick, hands-free transcribed e-mails are at all important to you, it’ll be worth the $17.99.

Poynt Adding Reverse Lookup, Restaurant Reservations for BlackBerry

Poynt is one of the cooler location-based applications for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) out there, currently supporting local search for movies and Yellow Pages, but at WES 2009, they’re showing off new features in Restaurant and White Pages services. Using both cell site recognition as well as GPS to figure what’s near you, Poynt plugs right into the native BlackBerry Maps app as well as the considerably more robust Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps for Mobile. Once you find a restauraunt listing you like, just hit the menu key and go to Map Listing. You can also map all of your search results to better weigh your options.

What I found a little more interesting was the White Pages service. It plugs right into your call log, so when you get a call from someone you don’t know, you can run a reverse phone lookup right from your mobile. This is incredibly handy, and I could see it being great even as a standalone app. Of course, the main thing for White Pages is phone number lookup, which is invaluably helpful. Poynt is still free, and available in the App World – keep an eye out for this update in a couple of weeks.

Streaming Podcasts come to Viigo

It’s been a long time a-coming, but streaming podcasts are finally here for Viigo on BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). Twitter and Facebook integration also got a bit of an upgrade for the social networkers out there. While podcasting is a big step for Viigo, I’m not sure if it will replace PodTrapper as my primary podcast client, it’s a great option for more casual listeners, who don’t need their shows saved locally, especially if they’re already using Viigo for its numerous other great features (like weather, sports, news, local interest services and more).

Podcasts are something Viigo has been promising for awhile, so it’s what we’re mostly excited about, but they’re also pushing their enterprise product pretty heavily at WES. Companies can set up their own version of Viigo behind their firewall and roll it out internally to keep employees up-to-date with a bunch of pertinent information, like contact profiles, reports, and policy information. Tag all that onto their earlier PageOnce announcement, and Viigo’s had a pretty solid WES.

Replacing Pagers – Medical Industry Using BlackBerry to Catch up to Communication Standards

I just got back from a small and cozy sideshow here at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium called the International Mobility Forum, where RIM zooms in on developers and experts from particular niches; this year, they’re looking at the medical field. It’s not an area that we get a chance to take a look at too closely, since they’re a little different from your traditional enterprise market, but the solutions available for the medical arena really deserve some attention since lives are in the balance.

The speakers reccurringly brought up the fact that poor bookeeping not only results in return visits, but even mortalities. With clearer communication, better data and closer links to patients, hospitals and other health organizations have a lot to gain from a strong mobility strategy. My general impression, however, was that most hospitals still use pagers and paper records for the majority of their work, resulting in lots of lost time. One of the case studies mentioned that under the old model, it would take an average of 33 minutes to “close the loop” (i.e. have a returning patient meet with their doctor at a hospital, who would have their records in hand and know the situation); apparently with BlackBerrys, they’ve managed to shave that down to 11 minutes. There’s money to be saved too, of course - a home care firm based in the UK has saved upwards of $150 k/year by optimizing the information flow to their mobile workforce.

BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) remains the ideal solution for these organizations because of the patient records involved – the BES back-end has all the security needed to stay compliant with most national privacy standards. Bluetooth connectivity means accessories can take all sorts of readings, like weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, the whole shebang. Other, lower-tech solutions that rely on reporting results by, say, SMS has the added risk of a patient being dishonest, or miscalculating, or simply mistyping. Passive, instrumented data entry also makes the whole process more painless for remote patients – the more seamlessly information can be collected, the less smothered patients will feel by docs breathing down their neck for information.

The possibilities for multimedia are also being explored: the BlackBerry camera is good enough for ambulances to shoot over pictures of a burn victim to their destination hospital and allow for triage before they even arrive. There was even mention of a research project that was attempting to get a low-grade microscope attachment for mobile cameras that would allow users to detect diseases with larger cells, like malaria and TB. A cool idea, and we’ll definitely have to keep our eye out for it.

Gwabbit Scans BlackBerry E-Mails for Contact Info, Updates Address Book

One of the cooler products that caught my eye on the Solutions Showcase floor at WES 2009 was Gwabbit. It’s a simple, new app for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) that scans your incoming e-mail for contact information (stuff usually thrown into a signature), sends it off to their servers, figures out what fields the information would go into (phone, e-mail, etc.), compares it to your address book, and offers to update or create new contacts as needed. Although it sounds simple and awesome, they’re going with a subscrition model ($10/year) for the app, which I find just a bit confusing. Gwabbit builds off their earlier Outlook app that did the same thing, available for $19.95. I’m still unsure about how much memory this would take up by running in the background, or if it would slow down the e-mail-reading process while it’s busy scanning, but the idea is solid and will definitely be giving it a shot in the near future. Bonus points for an awesome mascot.

WES 2009 Day 1 Keynote

RIM’s biggest BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) show of the year is now officially on and the the keynote is gonna kick things off. We aren’t expecting anything big (like the a device announcement), but will probably have some cool stuff for enterprise and admins. Woop! Show’s starting. Time to liveblog.

8:44 – Mike Lazaridis talks up BlackBerry’s birthday, success and growth.

8:47 – Mike intros BES 5.0. Web-based console, end-users get remote access, e-mail flags and folders. Same ol’.

8:52 – Beta testers give their testimonials. Glowing all around – high availability, failover, easy upgrade, solid security.

8:56 – Mike talking about making BlackBerry an all-in-one connection back home while staying secure. Now talking about Chalk Media. Hmm… I’m listening… Dang, moved on to Mobile Voice System. Was hoping maybe there was some announcement with Chalk there. Podcast software bundled with OS might have been cool.

9:00 – Wireless Presentation Solution for projecting PowerPoints gets mentioned. Would like to have seen more of it, though.

9:03 – Mike goes off stage. More peppy video testimonials.

9:06 – IBM Lotus Software GM Bob Picciano takes the stage. Talks up their enterprise collaboration software.

9:11 – We’re building a smarter planet, apparently. I dunno, still seems pretty dumb to me. Chewing through 9 predictions for collaboration shifts. 1: Everyone needs universal access to collaboration.

9:13 – Prediction number two: Messaging becomes an integrated platform, like building into BlackBerry. Number three: managing through human networks, not hierarchies.

9:15 – Number four: Telephony becomes voice collaboration. Basically, more than just talking – click to collaborate. Number five: Desktop productivity tools can save enterprise a bunch of money. BES 5.0 supports OpenOffice and Lotus Symphony. The French dude just raspberried the Bob, totally unimpressed. Heh.

9:18 – Number six: Transform SMBs into global trading partners. Managed services work well for them. Linux emerges onto the corporate desktop. Huh, eeeeenteresting. Open Collaboration Client Solution offers low cost Linux-based options.

9:21 – Number eight: Proliferation of cloud computing, LotusLive is their main offer on that front.

9:25 – New product… Alloy by IBM and SAP gives users reports management, travel management, leave management, a bunch of other stuff.

9:29 – P.S.: The Wi-Fi here sucks. Cisco’s Laurent Philonenko takes the stage also talking up collaboration. “We are now oblivious of location. … We work everywhere.” Click to join is apparently a big deal. “Have you tried joining a conference while driving on a freeway? If not, don’t.”

9:37 – “Data has overwhelmed voice in a very big way.” IP telephony is letting us do some new things with voice. Demo time. Getting a text messaging while you’re on a voice call – the texter doesn’t call because they see their contact’s current status. Cool, I guess?

9:43 – Wow. Reserve conference room and detect resources like projector and Wi-Fi from the phone. That’s really cool, actually. Shows the conference room on a map, just click it on your device for options.

9:48 – Cisco’s off. More peppy videos.

9:50 – Eric Haseltine, President of Haseltine Partners LLC. I don’t know who he is or what he does, but he looks like he would make a great Emperor Palpatine.

9:52 – Oh, he’s a brain scientist! He was an exec VP for Disney and worked for national security. Talking a lot about “long fuse, big bang.”

9:54 – Talking about neuroeconomics, seeing how the brain works when it comes to money. Most people will take $10 today over $11 tomorrow.

9:57 – Talking about the conflict between creating revolutionar products and dealing with immediate demands of investors. “The urgent always trumps the important.”

10:08 – The I/O bottleneck will open up – projectors are already broaching the problem of small screens and small keyboards. Use a mental time machine to figure out what would be awesome in the future and start planning for it today.

10:11 – Early adopters won’t fight you. Those in discomfort zones or best candidates for trying new technology, since those who are comfy in their position won’t want to move.

10:15 – Haha, Palpatine just made a Rebel Alliance reference to counter-cultures and how useful they are to new technology.

Smart Card Security Being Built into microSD Memory Cards

While RIM’s press briefing today at WES 2009 was boring for the most part, but there was this little thing that their security VP brought up that looked really cool. MicroSD cards with embedded Smart Card security have apparently been around at least two years, but it’s certainly new to me. Giesecke & Devrient have a card shown here that carries up to 2 GB of information, in addition to ensuring only the designated device can access the data on that card, as well as being used for key generation. RIM’s big on security, and I could see security-embedded microSD cards taking off with the particularly tight-lipped enterprises of the world. IntoMobile at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2009

Y’know, MWC, CES, and CTIA might be bigger shows, but Research in Motion’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium really lets you focus on one platform: Blackberry (NSDQ: RIMM). Everywhere else you have to keep an eye on a bunch of different carriers, often to the detriment of anyone else trying to grab your attention. This is my second year here, and after hooking up with fellow bloggers and innovative developers on press day today, I’m already looking forward to the official start to WES tomorrow. On top of keeping a close eye on our WES 2009 category, you can follow yours truly on Twitter for a personal look, as well as IntoMobile’s official feed which will feature 12seconds clips from the show. Tomorrow I’m hoping to go booth to booth and force exhibitors to condense their pitches to fit in 12 seconds – should be fun! (Remember, anybody from the UK should follow @IntoMobile anyway for a chance to win an Xda Zest from O2!)

This afternoon, I took part on a little predictions panel as part of BoxTone’s set-up. Al Sacco from CIO, Kevin from CrackBerry, Kyle from BlackBerry Cool and Howie from Port3101 all had their own 3-year predictions to make – my most outrageous claim was that RIM would make a slider, but there was a lot of talk about whether or RIM could (or would ever) acquire Palm (NSDQ: PALM). Overall, a great discussion about the smartphone sphere and how BlackBerry fit into it. Pics below, along with shots of the show floor. Stay tuned for more news this week from WES!

Viigo Partners with PageOnce for Personal Finance Monitoring

PageOnce is a really great app for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) and iPhone that pulls information across a bunch of different financial institutions so you can keep a close eye on how your acounts are doing. Viigo, my personal favourite app on BlackBerry, has now integrated PageOnce into their Finance services. The partnership marks a significant departure for Viigo in that it’s their first premium service; PageOnce will cost you $9.99 a year, but if you’re the type who wants to keep close tabs on their assets, this is an extremely viable option. Viigo’s already a great all-in-one app, and this is a great addition to their Finance category. BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 Announced

Admins, rev your engines. RIM has been testing the latest version of the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Enterprise Server for a long time now to iron out all the bugs, but BES 5.0 is now publicly available. If you haven’t been in the loop, some of the main features for end-users include:

The release also marks RIM meeting EAL 4 Common Criteria, up from level 2 last year. Cool stuff overall, and it sets the groundwork for handheld software version 5.0. We’ll probably have to wait until devices like the BlackBerry 8250 and 9630 before the new OS is available, however.
