IBM Watson to Power Smartphone Apps

We were all impressed by Watson’s trouncing of Jeopardy grandmaster Ken Jennings, a couple of years ago. While the system was designed specifically to compete on the game show, its real world implications are great. Recently IBM announced plans to adapt Watson for healthcare purposes, harnessing its searching and indexing power to keep health care providers abreast of the latest medical information. Now IBM is leasing out Watson to handle customer service for companies such as Nielsen, IHS, Royal Bank of Canada, and ANZ Bank. Apps designed by these partners will use Read more

Customer satisfaction with iPhone has declined since last year

The American Customer Satisfaction Index scores for cell phones are in for 2013 and a new trend has taken place this year. Same as always and not totally surprising, Apple remains in the lead with the highest customer satisfaction rating thanks to the iPhone. However, the gap is tightening as competition like Samsung and Motorola have gained quite a few points at Apple’s expense. In 2012, Apple had the highest score out of any cell phone manufacturer with an 83. This year, still at the highest, it has actually dropped Read more

iOS 7 to get more social with Flickr, Vimeo integration

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but iOS 7 is in fact adding more social networks to its list of integrated services. Twitter and Facebook were already on board, each debuting in iOS 5 and iOS 6 respectively. Now according to a report from 9to5Mac citing “a person familiar with the software,” Flickr and Vimeo are getting tied in as well. Users will supposedly be able to sign in and manage their account integration from the Settings app, much like they’re able to do today with Twitter and Facebook. Read more

Square Stand for iPad makes cash registers look dull, stupid

Few days ago, Square unveiled the Square Stand, a specially designed iPad stand with an embedded card reader that creates a fancy alternative to traditional cash registers. We must say the Square Stand + iPad installation reminds us little on the iMac but I guess that was the idea — to piggyback on the proven design Apple fans are used to. In the official press release, Square co-founder Jack Dorsey described the $299 Square Stand as “elegant, fast, affordable and easy to use,” and as such – perfect for any Read more

Analytics site App Annie released a report today that confirmed Nintendo and Sony’s greatest fears, mobile gaming app revenue had lapped their sales twice. Android and iOS gaming revenue was 3 times that of dedicated portable consoles in 2013′s first quarter. The in depth report can be found here but the jist of it’s pretty clear:   “For the Portable Gaming Report Q1 2013, there are three important takeways: iOS and Google Play both saw growth in game downloads and consumer spending. iOS is now the leader in consumer spending on games, Read more

iOS 6 gets green light from the US Defense Department

Good news for Apple as the company’s iOS 6 software just received clearance from the United States Defense Department. This undoubtedly sets the stage for the iPhone and iPad to become standard commonplace in the hands of workers in the Pentagon.  This comes to no ones surprise, considering how the approval of the DoD has been rumored for some time now. Apple’s iOS 6 joins Samsung running the Knox security suite and BlackBerry 10 devices. The government looks to be just about done with those obsolete BlackBerry 7 handsets that’s Read more

iOS vs Android: Revenue wars

If you’re a developer looking to enter the mobile app market, you’re probably thinking to develop for iOS and Android first, and only later follow-up with an app for some other platform. But which of the two most popular mobile platforms to start with? While iOS is still a leading mobile OS, Android is quickly catching up, attracting user segments Apple isn’t capable of getting. Then again, that particular group of users (emerging markets) may not be the best bet for the app you’re making. Or is it? Few of Read more
