A couple of months ago we heard that Acer was working on a tablet that would run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, have a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, and most impressively pack a 10.1 inch display that could push 1920 x 1200 pixels. The Iconia Tab A700 as it came to be called remained a rumor for quite some time, but now it’s official … sort of. While Acer hasn’t announced the Iconia Tab A700, they are showing it off at CES. It delivers everything the rumors said it would, for a price we don’t yet know, and it’s slated to hit the market during the second quarter of this year. With all that being said, we’re a little disappointed to hear that Acer is going to develop their own custom Android skin to put on top of Ice Cream Sandwich. That means performance might be impacted, and worst of all software updates may be delayed. It’s also hard to get excited about an Android tablet when the iPad 3 is rumored to be both announced and end up in stores at some point in March.

Speaking about the iPad 3, it’s heavily rumored to come with a screen that can push 2048 x 1536 pixels. That’s obviously better than the Iconia Tab A700, and don’t even get us started about apps either. There are zero applications that take advantage of Ice Cream Sandwich, yet you can expect iOS developers to pour their heart and souls into making something for the “retina” screened iPad the day it gets released. Is it unfair to compare two products that haven’t yet hit the market? Absolutely, but that’s Google’s fault for failing to get us excited about their tablet software, which by the way was created as a direct response to Apple’s resounding success in a product category that they created.

What do you think, is any Android tablet that hits the market DOA?

The Acer Iconia Tab A200 has a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a 10.1-inch WXGA HD 1280 x 800 display, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a rear-facing camera, a few standard ports and you’ll be able to pick up the 8 GB WiFi model for $330 and the 16 GB WiFi model for $350.
I don’t really have that much to say about the Tab A200, as it looks like a solid Android tablet but the only thing that really stands out to me is the pricing and it’s not even as cheap as something like the Kindle Fire. If you’re into Android tablets, the Acer Tab A200 may be a good device to take a look at but I’m not seeing anything too compelling here.

We had heard last month that Acer was going to pump out a pretty impressive tablet called the A700, and now it’s looking more likely than ever that we’ll see a big unveiling at CES. After some lucky Russians got their hands on one, we can confirm that it will have a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 touchscreen, and a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor. All of the usual inputs that were on the original Acer Iconia Tab A500 are there, like full-sized USB, microSD memory card slot, microUSB, microSD memory card slot, microUSB, and the 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. You’ll get 10 hours of video playback on the A700 thanks to the buxom 9800 mAh battery included.

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 is shaping up to quite the beast, but that’s only on paper. Their software customizations to Android still have a long way to go, and with Samsung well-entrenched in the world of Android tablets, Acer has their work cut out for them.

The A700′s smaller brother, the A200, has already hit the streets, but we’ll definitely check them both out at CES. Unfortunately, the source says we may not see the A700 on shelves until March or April.

To be fair, the A200 does look sexy in red, while the black model looks like any other tablet out there.

The news is that Acer’s baby is now available in the UK through Very.co.uk, which is offering it for 299 GBP (about $462). And yes (in case you wonder), you can choose between black and red versions.

Aside from the specs mentioned above (screen, CPU and OS), the A200 also comes with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB o RAM, and 8 or 16GB of built-in storage. As far as I understood, Very.co.uk is offering the 8GB model.

At the moment you’re limited to Honeycomb, though the Ice Cream Sandwich update will definitely be released at some point in the future. Unfortunately, we don’t know when exactly that will happen…

However there’s a word of caution for those of you with rooted Iconia Tab A500 – we’re not sure whether these software releases will break your root so you better search through the Interwebs and see what other members of the community are saying.

And we thought the Acer Iconia Tab A200 will be an affordable tablet? It may turn to be the case but not in Russia where, according to Mobile-Review, it will sell for 14,990 rubles (about $470).

Yep it’s the same 10.1-inch device with a dual-core processor we’ve seen getting FCC’s seal of approval in October of this year. And again — considering the Asus Transformer Prime with quad-core processor will soon hit the market — we thought it will be cheaper. In comparison, Asus’ baby costs just $30 more, making for an awesome deal, hardware wise.

Anyway, we’re hoping Acer will adjust the price even before the tablet starts selling. Moreover, I would expect it to be offered for up to $100 less in the ever-competitive U.S. market. We’ll definitely watch where this goes and let you know as soon as we hear something new, like the A200′s price in parts of Europe. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?

As you’re about to see, the Taiwanese company is pitching the device’s multimedia capabilities to the users, touting the device as an ideal way to consume and share photos, music and video content.

As far as we know, the A200 will be a budget tablet, most likely costing around $400 — it will sport the NVidia Tegra 2 processor rather than the brand new Tegra 3 chipset. Moreover, there’s a 1280×800 pixels touchscreen, full-sized USB port, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. No word about 3G so we guess this little fella’ may be limited to Wi-Fi hotspot connections, which isn’t that bad — you don’t want another monthly commitment anyways… And now the mentioned commercial. Enjoy!

As a reminder, Acer is also working on quad-core tablets Iconia Tab A700 and A701 which will come with 1920×1200 pixels screen.

It looks like the tablet bubble has finally arrived. Starting in 2012, companies such as HP, Acer, Asus and Dell are planning to gradually drop out of the tablet game altogether, according to information obtained by DigiTimes. Manufacturers believe they don’t have any advantages to compete in the tablet market and are looking to exit stage left.

The DigiTimes report was quickly rebuffed by Asus and Dell. According to ZDnet, both companies flat-out deny any reports they are exiting the tablet market. Despite this denial, I can see why the original report may be true. Battling the tablet behemoth Apple is one thing, but to also compete with Amazon and Barnes & Noble, with their unbelievably low prices on hardware makes it damn near impossible. How can they compete with the Kindle Fire which is just 200 bucks and the upcoming Nook Simple Touch which is supposed to cost $99? These PC manufacturers can’t sell their devices at these rock-bottom prices and still make a profit and if you can’t make a profit, why bother doing it?

Even if they could lower their prices, HP, Acer, Asus, and Dell don’t have the content to compete, and this is where Apple, Amazon, and B&N excel. In order to be successful in this new age of tablets, the makers will have to carry their own ecosystem, which is something Apple and Amazon nailed from day one. HP, Acer, Asus, and Dell would have to license content, which would take even more money off their precious bottom-line .

With a little less than 90 days until the start of 2012, we already know what sort of specs are going to become the norm for high end smartphones. We’re talking 720p screens, dual core processors, NFC, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, all that is considered essential if you want to get a seat at the flagship table. But what about tablets? The most popular tablet on the market, the Apple iPad 2, has a 1024 x 768 screen resolution, dual core 1 GHz processor, and 512 MB of RAM. There are higher end Android tablets, but beyond some extra megahertz here and there and a few more vertical and horizontal pixels, the baseline hasn’t changed much since early 2011. Thanks to a leak on Acer’s website that was spotted by HDblog.it, we now not only know about two new devices that are due to hit next year and will make us foam from the mouth, but the specs that will become commonplace over the next 12 to 18 months.

The quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 is at the heart of the Acer Iconia A700 and A701, but what makes these tablets special is the screen. Forget 1080p, these bad boys are going to deliver 1920 x 1200 pixels, the same resolution as the 17 inch MacBook Pro that this writer is using to compose this piece. Assuming that these tablets measure no more than 10 inches diagonally, that would equate to roughly 225 pixels per inch. Oh and as for the difference between the A700 and A701, the latter features 3G connectivity while the former does not.

Here’s what we’ve yet to find out: When will the Iconia A700/A701 be announced? How much will they cost? When will they actually hit store shelves? If we had to guess as to when we’ll get the answers to all those questions, we’d say January 2012 when the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas takes place.
