Telefonica Confirms Firefox OS Device Release In Q3 2013

Firefox OS device launch plans have been confirmed today by Telefonica, which will be bringing Alcatel and ZTE devices to Spain, Colombia and Venezuela in Q3 2013. Firefox OS handsets manufactured by LG, Huawei and Sony will be launched in Q4 2013. Carriers that have pledged support for the nascent smartphone OS are Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telefonica, America Movil, KDDI, Telecom Italia, Telenor, China Unicom, 3 Group, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, TMN and VimpelCom.

The announcement came as part of Telefonica’s Q1 2013 financial results, which were published earlier today. The Firefox OS platform was announced at Mobile World Congress this year, and is based on HTML-5. The platform is designed to be released in emerging markets, and to grace handsets that are on the lower end of the scale. Firefox unveiled its new Firefox OS simulator recently, which gives developers a new tool to help grow the fledgling app ecosystem. Mozilla plans on releasing the OS in emerging markets before tackling the U.S. and other markets.

Time will tell how Firefox OS fares in the smartphone market, as it will be competing against heavy hitters such as Android and iOS.

ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Idol to be featured in Iron Man 3

TCL Communication, which owns the ALCATEL brand, has scored a big product placement deal for the upcoming Iron Man 3. Their ONE TOUCH Idol will be used in the upcoming blockbuster, though we’re not sure Tony Stark will be the one making phone calls with ALCATEL’s baby.

To celebrate this marketing achievement, the company is organizing sweepstakes through its Facebook page, allowing fans to enter for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to attend the movie’s red carpet premiere in Hollywood on April 24, 2013. In addition, TCL will also run a retail promotion with RadioShack featuring the existing ALCATEL Authority smartphone from April 14 to May 11. The offer will include a pair of movie tickets, with qualifying device purchase, to watch Marvel’s Iron Man 3 after it hits theaters on May 3.

Again, at just 110 grams, the ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Idol is the lightest smartphone in its category. It has a 4.7″ qHD IPS screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 3G + Wi-Fi connectivity, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing one, 1,800mAh battery and a memory card slot. It will be available in a variety of colors with brushed aluminum finish, including Silver, Slate, Cranberry Pink, Red, Magic Blue and Mint Green.

Alcatel prepared quite a show at its Mobile World Congress booth. The handset maker had a ton of devices on display, many of which had their world premier in Barcelona. That Firefox OS-based One Touch Fire was just one of them and it obviously got the biggest attention.

One thing is certain – Alcatel is getting serious about growing its market share, and is already offering Android and Windows Phone-based devices. Conquering another platform (Firefox) is another step in that direction, and we’re sure there’s more to come from Alcatel in the months to come.

MWC 2013: Hands on with the Firefox-powered Alcatel One Touch Fire

Alcatel has released a new entry-level smartphone that will be running the new Firefox OS, the Alcatel One Touch Fire, and we’ve finally gotten our hands on it. At 3.5 inches, the Fire seems a little small in the age of bigger screens and phablet type devices. Proving the old adage of size doesn’t matter, the Fire, while on the lower-end as far as specs go, to provides a snappy responsive interface using the Firefox OS.

The Alcatel One Touch Fire sports a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, runs on a 1GHz single-core CPU, has 512MB internal memory, 256MB of RAM, and a 1400mAh battery.

The device itself fits great in the hand, and has a slick white surface, with the sides surrounded by an orange or blue bumper. On the front of the phone resides a physical home button, and a microphone. The power button and headphone jack are on the top of the unit, and on the back you will find a speaker and 3.2 megapixel camera. The charging jack is on the bottom left side of the unit.

The Firefox OS is pretty stunning, even running on a low-end device such as the Fire. The lack of apps for the fledgling Firefox OS will be a bit of a nuisance when the phones become available , but with all Firefox OS apps being based on HTML-5, we will no doubt see some interesting offerings arrive quickly after launch.

MWC 2013: Hands on with Alcatel One Touch Star

Alcatel One Touch Star was shown off at Mobile World Congress 2013. The Touch Star is a budget-friendly handset powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. On the design side of things, the Star has a sleek finish to it, and it comes in white, black, or pink. The plastic doesn’t do the phone wonders as it gives off a cheap look, however, when we handled the device the build quality felt decent.

For a low-end phone, Alcatel’s One Touch Star, brings more than adequate specs to the table, including a colorful 4-inch AMOLED screen and fully capable 1GHz processor that runs Jelly Bean. Surprisingly, Alcatel didn’t screw with the Android software, as the company didn’t add any new features on top of the operating system. This is great for future updates.

Like most Android phones, the Star allows users to personalize the phone with apps and widgets, arranging them on your home screen and such. The best feature on the phone is called Photo Sphere. The One Touch Star’s 5 megapixel rear camera uses Photo Sphere to shoot a 360-degree view, putting it in one photo that you can zoom around in. It resembles a bubble.

The One Touch Star is available in China, and will launch in Western Europe by the end of February, starting in France. Sorry, no word of it hitting the United States. Although Alcatel is expected to launch dual-SIM version of the phone, so maybe it can be bought unlocked. We should know more in the coming weeks.

MWC 2013: Hands on with Alcatel One Touch Idol X

Alcatel unveiled its new 5-inch handset known as the One Touch Idol X. This device sports an ultra thin border around its edges and a quad-core processor under the hood.

The One Touch Idol X carries some respectable features and specs, including a 1080p resolution display, 16GB of internal storage with an microSD card slot for expandable memory, 13 megapixel camera, 2000mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with some sort of custom user interface on top.

It’s a handset that has a very capable and responsive touchscreen, with a semi-soft plastic wrapped on the back. When we handled the phone, we noticed how extremely comfortable it was to hold, which is a good sign for such a large handset. The device will come in Red, Blue, and Yellow.

The Alcatel One Touch Idol X will be coming out sometime this year in 2013. Unfortunately, we didn’t get word to information on pricing and availability, or which countries the Idol X will be available. We expect Alcatel to give these precious details in an announcement at a later date.

MWC 2013: Alcatel announces new family of devices, Mozilla Firefox in tow

Alcatel recently announced a new family of devices at Mobile World Congress, each catering to a different market. While most of said devices are rocking Android, one of the new smartphones, the One Touch Fire, ships with Mozilla’s Firefox OS.

The new devices, LTE One Touch Idol, One Touch Idol X , One Touch Fire, and One Touch Star all vary in size and specs, but offer up some nice upgrades from previous devices, and new operating systems that we’re excited to see.

Each device adds a nice option to the allocated market Alacatel is shooting for, and we’re sure that many people will be interesting in checking out One Touch Idol X for its mammoth display and the One Touch Fire for a taste of Firefox OS.
