Here’s the pitch; you can judge for yourself:

Today the chaotic wireless industry just got … Simple. Executive leaders from some of the nation’s largest wireless mega giants have come together to revolutionize the unlimited prepaid wireless market by launching the new MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), Simple Mobile™.
How will Simple Mobile change the market? Simple, by offering the nation an unheard of SIM card program that instantly delivers affordable, unlimited access with everything wireless has to offer. Unlike other programs with corporate agendas, Simple Mobile customers are encouraged to B.Y.O.P. (Bring Your Own Phone). Service is obtained by placing a Simple Mobile SIM card into over 180 approved cool GSM phones. Customers will immediately get access to a national network that offers Unlimited Nationwide Talk, Unlimited Global SMS, and Wireless Internet Access (IM, MMS, Email & social networks). OMG! This is a game changer.

Simple Mobile (http://www.mysimplemobile.com) promises an affordable way of bringing the nation a much better wireless experience. Their promise of no compromising includes no minimum term lengths in contracts, no credit checks, no hidden fees, and unlimited plans starting at $40 a month.

It’s a simple approach based on their strong belief that wireless can be made less complicated. Simple Mobile plans to cut through the noise and offer a flexible handset solution on a high quality network with a full suite of web capabilities, at a crazy low price. Finally, today’s wireless customers will get what they have always wanted: EVERYTHING – NO MORE COMPROMISING!

While you’ll be able to bring your own GSM phone, Simple Mobile will be offering the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Pearl Flip, the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) razr V3, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 6030, and three Alcatel phones: the OT-800, OT-363, and OT-303.

Now, the idea of cheap unlimited access sounds suspiciously familiar to Zer01, only Simple Mobile is much more concerned with voice. Their $50 plan only includes 20 MB, with the option to double it to 40 MB for $5. Still, no contracts is sweet, and an ideal situation if you’ve already got your hands on hardware you like. As for coverage, it’s hard to tell if these guys are partnering with AT&T (NYSE: T), T-Mobile (NYSE: DT), or some combination thereof, but you can compare their coverage maps with Simple Mobile’s (I’m inclined to think it’s AT&T based on similar CA coverage in the north), and draw your own conclusions. It’s a tempting proposition, and I think there will be many customers out there interested in unlimited plans with no contracts. If you’re one of them, check out Simple Mobile’s home page for more info. I really hope wind brings something similar to Canada soon…

Fashion brands are not new to the idea of having their brand associated with a mobile phone. That said, we’ve spotted a new contender to the game at the FCC’s website – the Alcatel-made Miss Sixty phone.

From what we’re seeing, it’s an entry-level clamshell, with a large golden Miss Sixty logo promptly placed on the red back and front of the device. The phone also comes with golden keys and the same-colored headphones.

Rest of the specs include dual-band (850/1900 MHz) GSM/GPRS connectivity, Bluetooth support, some camera, media player, and of course a microSD memory card slot. And that’s about all we have at this stage. We’ll certainly post more about it as soon as Miss Sixty release some officially announcement…

Size wise, the OT-S988W measures 110×55x15.1 mm and has a weight of 124 grams.

Details on pricing are unknown at this stage, and we’ve no idea whether this baby will ever be sold in the Western hemisphere…

Alcatel has recently unveiled two new devices, both targeting low-to-mid range of the market. The twist is in the form factor, as both of these bring interesting features to the entry-level segment.

The first of the two, OT-707 (pictured on the right), is a small all-touchscreen device, measuring just 95×53x13 mm. Specs wise, it comes with a 2.3-inch QVGA touchscreen (kinda small for a touchscreen, though in real-life that may be just enough), dual-band (900/1800 Mhz) GSM/GRPS radio, Bluetooth, music player, FM radio, 1.3-megapixel camera, 10MB of internal memory that is further expandable with microSD memory cards.

As for the other model, OT-800 (the one on the right), again it’s an entry-level device, which dumps the touchscreen for the full QWERTY keyboard. In that sense, this low-end messenger is an ideal handset for young, savvy texters, who don’t necessarily like having bulky devices in their pockets — the OT-800 measures 111×58x14 mm. In terms of specs, it comes with a QVGA screen, tri-band (900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, FM radio, 2-megapixel camera.

Availability details are unknown at this stage. We do however, know the prices. Once they hit the market, the Alcatel OT-707 and OT-800 will be available for 100 EUR ($126) and 95 EUR ($120), respectively.

Yet another gem found whilst cruising through my photos of Mobile World Congress was this clip showing Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU)’s Enhanced Reality, which is still in its early stages. By initiating a video call through the service, video content can be superimposed onto real-world objects viewed through your phone’s camera. Two U.S. carriers are sniffing around the project, although no announcements have been made as of yet. It’s vaguely reminiscent of Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s Point and Find object recognition software shown off at CES, but I think Alcatel-Lucent’s offer has the potential for more pizazz. Point and Find will certainly be useful if it see the light of day, but simple links to relevant information lack the wow factor that will rope in early adopters.

The first Mandarina Duck phone was obviously a success when we have the company extending its relationship with Alcatel to launch a new device called MOON. Again, we’re not talking about a high-end smartphone here, but a reasonably priced (they say it will have a “tempting price”) fashion phone that prides itself to be a “feminine and sophisticated mobile phone.”

Sporting a clamshell form factor, the MOON sports a music player, Bluetooth 2.0, and an array of standard mobile phone apps like calendar, calculator, and alarm clock. No other specs were given, but we’re guessing there’s some camera included in the mix, too.

Once it hits the stores, the new Mandarina Duck phone will be available in three 3 pearlescent colours: white, pink and orange, with each one of the versions coming with the specially colored UI to match the handset’s color…

It’s not that often that we hear about some new Alcatel phone. The French company seems to have almost abondend its handset business, hence the device we’re showing you today, Alcatel OT-I650, is manufactured by China-based TCL Communication Technology.

Anyway, the candybar-shaped device is made for those that don’t want a smartphone with its complicated mambo-jumbos. Rather the individuals Alcatels is targeting want a simple and easy to use phone that fits their active lifestyle. That being said, the Alcatel OT-I650 does go beyond “classic” low-end phones we’re seeing thanks to the built in G-sensor (accelerometer), which allows users to switch between apps by shaking the phone. In that sense, this device reminds us such handsets as Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 5500 or Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) W580, though the mentioned two are way more capable than Alcatel’s baby.

In addition to G-sensor, the OT-I650 also comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, as well as several sport apps pre-installed like pedometer.

The Alcatel OT-I650 will first be available in Russia in two colors (black and orange) for 3,190 rubles, which is about $120.

Manufactured by TCL (Alcatel), the entry-level device comes with 60 free minutes, the battery charged, and the SIM card already in place. Once you spend the free minutes, refilling is done using prepaid cards called “mobicarte.”

The idea seems to reach those users that don’t care about high-end features of today’s smartphones, but rather prefer simple phone for texting and calling. Additionally, the France Telecom owned mobile operator may push the device towards a large number of tourists, who in most cases just need a cheap solution to stay in touch while visiting France.

That being said, the two companies will push the BIC phone through over the counter channels, major supermarkets and local convenience stores. Starting from August, 7th, BIC phone will be available in citrus orange and lime green in metropolitan France for 49 EUR with all the taxes.

The facility has been developed to support Telstra’s Mobile Foxtel TV service and will ensure that Alcatel-Lucent’s MiTV application and the Mobile Foxtel service are compatible with and operate smoothly on the handsets that Telstra offers to customers.

Apparently the facility will test up to 100 3G handsets per year to ensure that the typical issues found with complex applications and services and met ahead of time. The testing will also include Streamezoo, who supply a client software app to AlcaLu for MiTV. Whereas as previously testing had been done overseas, it will now be handled locally, and over time the idea is that the service centre can provide testing for other service providers too.

So, a pretty logical step – the best tests are always those that approximate reality the most closely, and therefore where better to test than your own network….!

There haven’t been many new announcements and even less new hardware on display. Still, some of CTIA’s exhibitors really know how to entertain. Take Alcatel, for example.

The Alcatel booth wasn’t the biggest or glitziest booth on the show floor. Not by a long shot. They didn’t have amazing hardware. They did have, however, was a Playboy phone and a bunch of hotties prancing around the booth. Unfortunately, it seemed as though I missed the runway show.

The Playboy phone is a Playboy-branded Alcatel OT-V770A mobile phone for the discerning bunny-lover in all of us. Cellatel is handling the licensing of the Playboy brand. It comes in your choice of Gold, Pink, or Silver metallic trim, and plays up its Playboy affiliation to the brim. The Playboy phone sports the same 1.3 megapixel camera, media player, full-screen video playback, 10MB onboard memory, and microSD card slot as the Alcatel OT-VV770A, with the addition of that Playboy logo and embossed metallic rear-panel.

It’s not high in features, but at 10mm thin, it’s got gobs of style. The Playboy phone was only one of 20+ handsets that were at the booth today. The new lineup ranges from sporty and rugged to stylish and refined – but Playboy got the lion’s share of the attention. Go figure.

MetroPCS won the 3G spectrum in last year’s AWS spectrum auction, and will be upgrading their CDMA network from 1xRTT to EV-DO speeds in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Dallas.

MetroPCS also plans to launch in four new markets with 3G from the get-go – New York, Las Vegas, Bostson, and Philadelphia will see MetroPCS’s 3G EVDO network go live in the near future.

“Our customers want the most value for their dollar and our unlimited flat-rate service offers a compelling value proposition, which is evident by the remarkable continued growth of our subscriber base,” said Roger D. Linquist, MetroPCS’ Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.

The upgraded 3G MetroPCS network will bring advanced data solutions to its subscriber-base. MetroPCS customers can expect the same “unlimited” rate plan model with even more service options – services like “advanced multimedia, mobile data, unified communications, video mail, speech-enabled and real-time voice portal applications.”

MetroPCS did not outline their 3G-rollout timeline, but we assume it’ll be completed before the end of 2008. Unlimited wireless plans just got a bit more interesting. We’d love to see a 3G GSM network with an unlimited rate-plan model – now that would get us to bite.

Remember that new 4G tech that Verizon was considering for their next-gen wireless broadband network? Yea, well, the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) protocol isn’t just being considered in Finland, the ultra-fast high-speed wireless 4G protocol has already wrapped up a successful trial in Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s homeland.

The LTE/SAE (Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution) Trial Initiative (LSTI) kicked off back in May and the first phase of testing has shown that peak-data-rates can be reached for both mobile and stationary platforms. In other words, LTE has proven itself in delivering higher data throughput levels to devices on the move as well as those sitting still. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working to standardize the LTE protocol as a 4G standard.

The LSTI was founded by Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Ericsson, France Telecom/Orange, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, T-Mobile and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), and was recently expanded with China Mobile, Huawei, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM), Samsung, Signalion, Telecom Italia and ZTE.

Here are the technical LTE spiel from the press release:

From a technical perspective, 3GPP LTE technology aims to provide improved spectral efficiency, increased radio capacity, lower latency, lower operating costs for operators, and ultimately new high-performance mobile broadband end-user services. 3GPP LTE is specified to enable downlink/uplink peak data rates above 100/50 Mbps in initial deployment configurations.

100/50Mbps in the down and upstream sounds damn good to us. We can’t wait for Verizon (NYSE: VZ) to start work on their own LTE network. Of course, the 3GPP LTE standard won’t be standardized until 2010 (if all goes according to plan). This first testing phase of the 3GPP LTE standard is the first of a three-part program (Proof of concept, Interoperability, and Trial) – so, we’ve got a bit of a waiting game on our hands. Looks like Sprint’s WiMAX 3G standard will have to hold us over until then.

Keep reading for the full press release.

The LTE/SAE trial initiative (LSTI) delivers initial results and expands to include new members

Espoo, Finland – The first phase in a trial of an evolved version of today’s mobile phone radio access technology designed to deliver much higher wireless data rates has proven a success.

The LTE/SAE (Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution) Trial Initiative (LSTI) launched in May this year has reported the successful delivery of the first in a series of test results aimed at proving the potential and benefits of LTE. LTE is being standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a next generation mobile broadband technology.

The Initiative was founded by leading telecommunications companies Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, France Telecom/Orange, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, T-Mobile and Vodafone, and was recently expanded with China Mobile, Huawei, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Signalion, Telecom Italia and ZTE joining as new members.

Initial results have confirmed that the technology will deliver high levels of data throughput both for stationary and mobile devices. In more detail, the group has confirmed that the LTE physical layer performance targets in terms of stationary and on-the-move peak data rates can be met. This confirmation was achieved using an agreed set of common transmission profiles, test procedures, and analysis methods. The joint tests were performed using prototype single and multi-antenna radio systems in both lab and urban field environments.

As mobile devices become increasingly sophisticated and handle more and more complex multimedia applications, the LTE/SAE technology is designed to give end users wireless access to growing levels of data throughput on the move.

From a technical perspective, 3GPP LTE technology aims to provide improved spectral efficiency, increased radio capacity, lower latency, lower operating costs for operators, and ultimately new high-performance mobile broadband end-user services. 3GPP LTE is specified to enable downlink/uplink peak data rates above 100/50 Mbps in initial deployment configurations.

The LTE/SAE Trial Initiative is divided into three main phases; Proof of concept, Interoperability and Trial. Joint testing, and reporting of ongoing results will continue out to the end of 2009, with initial LTE system deployments planned for the 2010 timeframe.

An LSTI spokesperson commented: “These early results show great promise for 3GPP LTE technology, and are a tangible early validation of the reality of 3GPP LTE systems and services. The collective and cooperative performance test work accomplished to date by this pioneering group is a testimony to the group’s leadership and determination to accelerate the availability of commercial and interoperable LTE systems.”

The new card not only pulls down sweet, sweet wireless data from Sprint’s extensive EVDO network, but also serves as an anti-theft device. The card has its own “small operating system, a CPU, memory and an SD slot” and must be inserted into the laptop before the laptop can be used – all the while your IT administrator can keep tabs on the laptop’s data and the user’s access to corporate networks. When lost or stolen, the data on the laptop can even be remotely wiped. And, with integrated GPS, the laptop’s whereabouts can be constantly monitored.

Subscriber’s to Sprint’s unlimited data plans can order up their very own OmniAccess 3500 for $250. The SprintSecure Laptop Guardian service will cost an additional $10 to $12 per month.

As with most other fashion phones, it’s not the features Alcatel is pushing, hence this device has a smallish 128×160 screen, MP3 player, stereo Bluetooth, VGA camera and the microSD expansion slot. In addition, Alcatel is bundling a bag clip with the device, to allow its (mostly female) users to easily attach the phone to their bags and not lose it in the depths.

I guess we can say Alcatel may have a winner with Mandarina Duck handsets. Not that they’ll sell tons of it, but that slowly they might return to the mobile phone scene with more similar devices. If your interested to grab a Mandarina Duck phone, you’ll have to wait for for the beginning of November and then buy it in one of many Carphone Warehouse stores for the still undisclosed price.

Features like built-in camera and a media player, which we take for granted nowadays, are just not there. However, the price is there — this baby costs mere £14.99 (roughly $30) and will be available in four different colors — hot pink, black, glossy blue and vibrant orange — from Woolworths this September.

We got some live pics of this puppy and we gotta say that, for an entry-level device, this thing looks pretty cool. The “rubbery” look is pretty attractive and the phone even comes with a remote control for playing all that music. Music controls are located on the phone’s external face, along with a small OLED display.

Still, we’d rather play our tunes on our Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone (we know it’s a lot more expensive, but that’s how we roll).

Lots more pics on the link

Lately, they’ve announced the No.3 GlamPhone that will be available in multiple colors (pictured bellow). As you can see from the image, this device will not sport that many features — it is primarily designed to be a basic mobile phone with music player functionality. In that sense, if priced correctly (i.e. cheap), it may find its audience among the younger crowd. The Alcatel No.3 GlamPhone will also pack a 1.3 MP camera, and will be available this June. Interestingly, the MVNO will be targetted at 40-65 year old women – as they are health “influencers” (read: Mothers). Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) will be leasing CDMA spectrum from an unnamed carrier and plans to release phones running BREW.
