Reuters is reporting that JP Morgan analyst Kevin Chang believes that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is working to push a new, cheaper iPhone out its doors later this year. Chang cites sources in the “supply channel” and the recent Apple patent application filing.
The new iPhone will be based on the Apple iPod Nano’s design, as we expected – providing a simpler, and less-frill-filled device for the lower-end users still wanting an Apple phone.
Chang stated, “We believe that iPod Nano will be converted into a phone because it’s probably the only way for Apple to launch a lower end phone without severely cannibalizing iPod Nano.”

Head on over to our Into iPhone mini-site to get the downlow on the latest breakthrough in the race to unlock the iPhone! Apparently, hackers have been able to gain access to the iPhone’s console, leaving them within sight of actually hacking the iPhone’s radio. News of this development comes hot on the heels of the release of the iPhoneInterface – the software that lets you dig around inside the iPhone’s file system. Network unlocked iPhones are closer than you think!

Remember Keep a Child Alive’s project to buy an iPhone and auction it on eBay to raise funds? Well, they’ve managed to sell it for $100,000! The buyer also received 2 Jawbone Bluetooth headsets, 2 round-trip domestic plane tickets, 2 VIP passes to the Black Ball, and of course tons of good-will. The “child-helping iPhone” will be personalized with a voice mail greeting from Alicia Keys and presented by the R&B star at the organization’s Black Ball honoring Bono on October 25th in New York City. All in all, with a single bid, the buyer managed to “save thousands of lives in Africa,” according to the NGO.
I find this as a great example of how NGOs can be entrepreneurial too. Keep a Child Alive activists waited in line for 4 days at Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s Soho location to purchase the first iPhone, while talking with media and spreading their message across the world — all in order to help others. Nice!

This is getting way out of control… Well known companies that exist four times longer than Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) are jumping to the iPhone bandwagon… Last in the series is BBC, which is apparently working to bring its iPlayer to the iPhone users. Wait, iPhone still waits to be released in the UK — but that doesn’t mean British people living/working in the States are not interested to watch the BBC programming on their iPhones. Somehow, I think this will coincide with the iPhone UK launch. We’ll see…

Check out the Video of BBC iPlayer after the jump.

invisibleSHIELD’s iPhone protection promises to (guess) invisibly protect your iPhone like no other case. The point here is that this “case” (if it’s a case at all – it’s more of a protective cover that extends its reach beyond the scree) doesn’t stand in the way of using your beloved handset. The invisibleSHIELD covers are made from a unique material originally created to protect the leading edges of military helicopter blades from wear and tear, hence their lifetime-lasting guarantee makes sense. According to ZAGG, the company behind this product, no other screen protectors can match the strength, the protection, and the durability of the invisibleSHIELD.
If I had an iPhone I would go for this — I’m not big fan of cases, and this case/cover combination seems to work just the way I like it. What you think? Also, if anyone of you try this out, please drop us a comment — so we all know whether this really works like they say it does.

Here’s something for “do-it-yourself” geeks – an iPhone Belt. To make yourself one, you’ll need some yard of black marine and clear (16 gauge) vinyl, and two full size pictures of iPhone printed out and mounted to heavy black presentation board. In terms of tools, prepare the scissors, hot glue gun and hot glue sticks, Super77 spray adhesive, sewing machine with heavy duty needle, black thread (heavy duty), X-Acto knife and cutting board. Of course, plenty of patience is also required, but then again – you already know that.
Now check out the video how to do it, after the break. It lasts for about 10 minutes, but is well worth the wait. After all, after you finish your iPhone Belt, you’ll be dressed as an uber-urban cowboy.

Yesterday was a tough day for the iPhone fans. Literally ALL Apple stores were out of iPhone stock. For a second we were worried… Actually not — we knew Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) was working hard on its supply-chain, and voila… Today there ARE iPhones available for purchase! Roughly 43% of all retail stores now has an iPhone. Unfortunately, Texas and California are not among the “stock states”, but our guess is that they will follow soon. While the iPhone demand is still strong, fever is slowly passing by and I would expect to see iPhone available in all Apple stores. Or, you can turn to eBay
if you hate waiting….

A recent patent filing by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) gives us a possible glimpse into Apple’s future tech for their Mac computer lineup. More specifically, Apple has filed to patent a multi-touch system for their mice’s shells. The application states that, “The invention relates to a configurable mouse with an extended sensing surface, which provides the mouse a customizable, programmable or adaptable way of generating inputs.”
Now, if you’re wondering how this relates to mobile tech, we’re going to justify our coverage of Apple’s mousing technology with the logic that multi-touch originated from the Apple iPhone. There, it’s kinda mobile, you happy now?
Anyway, the patent application goes on to outline a system by which the outer, plastic shell of the mouse will become a programmable sensing surface – using multi-touch inputs like those seen on the iPhone.
