The Wall Street Journal’s Kevin Sintumuang released an etiquette guide for Google Glass in Friday’s edition of the paper. In what he called “an open letter to very early adopters”, Sintumuang listed some potential no no’s and faux pas that uncouth “Explorers” could be perpetrating. Google released an update today for its Gmail for iOS app that brings improved integration with other Google services that are available on iOS as well as a few other improvements. By “improved integration” with other Google apps, I don’t mean you’ll see any of their functionality popping up in the Gmail app. Rather, it’s a lot easier to stay within the Google ecosystem now because you can open links from Gmail that will launch another Google app if you have it installed. While Google Glass is not available to the public just yet, developers are having all sorts of fun with the device. A developer by the name of Mike DiGiovanni has developed a Glass app called Winky, which takes photos with a mere blink of the eye. Winky uses functionality which lies dormant in Google Glass’ source code. Android tablet shipments took off last year, shipping more units than others in the tablet market, according to technology research firm IDC. According to IDC’s numbers, Android tablets shipped 27.8 million units in Q1 2013, which is a 247 percent improvement over Q1 2012. That leaves Android with a 56.5 percent share of the tablet market, with Apple coming in with 39.6 percent of tablet market share. Developers planning to attend Google I/O will want to head over to the I/O website and start planning their schedule for the upcoming event. Late on Tuesday, Google published the full lineup of sessions and the keynote event for the 2013 conference. Google I/O begins May 15 and lasts through May 17. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS is showing increased market share in the smartphone market, despite the domination of the smartphone market by OS’s such as Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. According to Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS accounted for 5.6% of smartphone sales in Q1 2013, which showed a growth rate of 1.9% compared to figures from the previous year. In an attempt to curb stolen smartphone sales, San Francisco police officers are using a tactic that they hope will shock and awe those who buy stolen iPhones out of doing so. The SFPD is sending out plainclothes officers to some of the rougher areas of SF, offering “stolen” iPhones to unwitting civilians. When someone shows interest in purchasing the device, the cops make an arrest. According to SFPD, half of all thefts in the city by the bay involve stolen smartphones, with women being the targets of most robberies. … Read more
