i-mate shut down due to $15 million fraud

You might remember long-time Windows Mobile player i-mate shutting down shop in Dubai a few weeks ago. It happened in a fairly abrupt way, and now we know why. CEO Jim Morrison claims to have been the victim of a $15 million fraud committed by one of his board members.

“This is the first time I have ever wanted to murder someone. Eight years of my life I put into this. Personally, I have lost about $6m cash.”

Yow. All 120 employees have been laid off as a result, and it’s seeming unlikely that i-mate will be able to recover from this grievous blow. Those of you packing an i-mate, it may be time to seal that sucker up and save it as a collector’s item.

i-mate Closes up Shop

i-mate, a long-time Windows Mobile phone dealer, has shut down its UAE offices and laid off all staff. We had seen these guys with new, working products at MWC, and shipping orders were being made, but apparently retail partners have been told privately that i-mate is now out of business. The closure wasn’t entirely uncalled-for – between delisting from the UK stock market, execs resigning, and US layoffs, this is a long time coming. It’s too bad we’ll never see how their tough smartphone would have done in the market, but honestly, it’s the i-mate girls I’ll miss most of all.

i-mate smartphones hitting Uruguay

Windows Mobile smartphone maker, i-mate, has recently announced that its Windows Mobile smartphones are hitting Uruguay. As part of its partnership with distributor and vendor LAOR, the handset maker will offer its Ultimate range of devices to ANCEL customers (mobile division of ANTEL), Uruguay’s leading telecommunication company.

Together, the companies have introduced i-mate’s popular smartphones to the country, including Ultimate 8150 and Ultimate 9502. Both devices are positioned on the high-end spectrum, packing such things as WiFi, GPS, large screens, FM radio, QWERTY keyboard, and more.

Commenting on the announcement, i-mate’s CEO Jim Morrison said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer i-mate mobiles to customers in Uruguay for the very first time. i-mate products are amongst the most advanced and fastest mobiles available in the world. In fact, there is no other mobile available today that can match the extent of functionality in every i-mate Ultimate mobile.”

A sneak peek at i-mate’s credit card sized i-mate Centurion

The model name for i-mate’s upcoming super-slim Windows Mobile smartphone conjures up images of an American Express credit card. And so it should. The not-yet-announced i-mate Centurion’s name is something of an ode to the credit card that inspired its size and form-factor. Barely thicker than half a deck of playing cards and almost exactly the same dimensions as your run-of-the-mill credit card, the i-mate Centurion is one small, yet powerful, smartphone. In fact, the Centurion is the new world’s smallest Windows Mobile smartphone!

i-mate was gracious enough to give us a sneak peek at this upcoming smartphone. Still recovering from the PR debacle that was the Ultimate smartphone lineup, i-mate is looking to regain credibility in a mobile market that had threatened to leave them behind with their Ultimate series smartphones.

Despite its almost impossibly small frame, the i-mate Centurion packs a respectable wallop. The full QWERTY keyboard underscores the Centurion’s draw a a fully-featured Windows Mobile smartphone. And, given the small size of the handset, the Centurion’s display was surprisingly usable and well-proportioned to the rest of the device. The camera on the backside was said to be of the 3-megapixel variety, although we didn’t have a chance to test it out.

The Centurion is still in development, as evidenced by the ill-fitting plastic pieces that belied its hand-made nature. i-mate says they’re aiming to go live with the i-mate Centurion by early Summer 2009, and will be pushing for a $550 price point.

If you’re looking for a teeny-tiny Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone that might just fit in your wallet (granted it’s big enough) with all the functionality of bigger, brick-like smartphones, the i-mate Centurion is a sure thing.

i-mate 810-F aka Hummer shows its face

i-mate will most likely introduce a new device at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The so called Hummer will wear “810-F” badge and will sport such things as Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard edition, HSDPA support, QVGA screen, GPS, WiFi, full QWERTY keyboard, 2 megapixel camera, and a 624MHz CPU. As always, the trick is in the details, which for this occasion include rubberized housing and some hex screws. As a result this is one of the most rugged smartphones available on the market, and also comes with a lifetime warranty.

The exact release date is unknown at this stage, and so is the price. Something tells me that life-long guarantee will reflect on your wallet, though…

i-mate releases its own UI for Windows Mobile

If HTC (TouchFLO 3D), Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) (Xperia Panels), Samsung (TouchWiz) and Asus (Glide) can have their own customized UI apps that sit on top of Windows Mobile, so can i-mate. The idea is of course to make smartphones running Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s mobile OS easier to use for an average user.

That being said, recently we’ve spotted i-mate releasing an UI app for its line of Windows Mobile smartphones called i-mate Go, which is based on the VITO Winterface and which honestly reminds us on iPhone’s UI. It features large, colorful icons and is easy to personalize (you can check our previous post about Winterface from here).

The new UI will be shipping with new devices, and in the meantime owners of Ultimate 9502, Ultimate 8502, Ultimate 8150, Ultimate 6150 and JAMA 101 models are advised to grab it and make their devices easier to use. Here’s a link to the page on i-mate’s website from where they can grab i-mate Go.

i-mate going private

We’ve almost missed this one, but since it’s important, we’re running it nonetheless.

Apparently, while HTC’s marketshare and profits are rising, things are not going that smoothly for the Windows Mobile smartphone maker – i-mate. Recently, the company’s CEO Jim Morrison stated that they plan to have the company de-listed from London’s AIM stock exchange and effectively make it privately owned. This move will save i-mate some $2 million in listing expenses.

Back in March, i-mate laid off most of its U.S. staff in an effort to cut costs and the company recently reported a loss of $10.8 million for the prior 6 month period. The U.S. offices were established as part of a planned assault on the North American market that never materialized…

FCC clears i-mate Ulimate 8502 for duty in the US

i-mate’s Ultimate lineup of mobile phones is definitely a mobile enthusiasts wet dream. At least in theory. With no US wireless carrier-support and nary an FCC seal of approval to speak of, i-mate hasn’t exactly broken into the US high-end handset market. So, no matter how high-end the i-mate Ultimate lineup may be, there’s just that little issue of getting the handset into consumer hands.

But, that may all change with the FCC’s approval of the i-mate Ultimate 8502 Windows Mobile Professional-powered handset. As evidenced by the FCC’s label to the right, the Ultimate 8502 has been cleared for duty in the US by the almighty FCC.

The i-mate Ultimate 8502 boasts a veritable what’s what of high-end mobile phone features that any true cellphone lover can appreciate. Features like HSDPA/HSUPA (in other words, HSPA), GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 2 megapixel camera, TV-out, and QWERTY keyboard secures the i-mate Ultimate 8502 a spot among the Windows Mobile smartphone elite.

The candybar form-factor is sure to appeal to the broadest possible mobile phone market, so it makes sense that i-mate decided to push this particular Ultimate handset through the FCC’s labs. It would be nice to see the i-mate Ultimate 9502 get the FCC’s nod of approval – with a full-VGA display and 3 megapixel camera, the Ultimate 9502 is a monster of handset.

Still, it’s nice to see i-mate making some headway into the US market with the Ultimate 8502.

i-mate chops US operations down to bare minimum – massive layoffs

We’ve been waiting for i-mate to get their Ultimate lineup up and running for some time now. The Ultimate devices are ready to rock, but delays and carrier resistance has caused i-mate to miss its target window for a US launch.

i-mate was banking on the Ultimate lineup of handsets bringing them out of the semi-obscurity they’ve always enjoyed and into the global limelight. Their Ultimate devices are impressive (if a bit homely), but it’s been a long time in getting those devices out to the public. In fact, it seems that it’s been too long in coming.

With costs mounting and revenues failing to keep up, i-mate has reportedly served pink-slips to most of its US division. Last Friday, i-mate chopped the entire engineering, QA, and tech writing departments off the i-mate payroll – leaving only a barebones staff to run the i-mate online portal in hopes of more US-sales. Even the Chief Software Officer and VP of Sales and Marketing took a walk after the massive employee firing on Friday.

The Ultimate 8502 and Ultimate 9502 are serious players in a crowded smartphone market, we hope i-mate stays around long enough in the US to prove themselves.

Australian Telstra first one to offer new i-mate smartphones

Remember new i-mate Ultimate 8502 and 9502 smartphones? Well, it’s Autralia-based Telstra that will be the first mobile operator to carry them. The two companies have reached an agreement under which Telstra’s customers will get an unfair advantage over the rest of us to try out the new super powerful Windows Mobile smartphones. In addition, Telstra also scored exclusive rights to exclusively offer the two devices on the continent. Too bad the first few people that buy either the Ultimate 8503 or 9502 will have to spend a small fortune — AUD$999 and AUD$1099 respectively — to own them. That’s starting from “early March” this year when they actually hit Telstra and their Licensed Shops…

i-mate unveils Ultimate 8502 and 9502 Windows Mobile smartphones

i-mate used the Mobile World Congress to unveil two new members of its Ultimate family – Ultimate 8502 and 9502. Both devices run Windows Mobile 6 Professional edition and boast such features as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, 256 MB ROM and 128 MB RAM, HSDPA, HSUPA, full QWERTY keyboard (the 9502 has a slide-out keyboard), direct video output, and of course the microSD expansion slot. Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM)’s 400 MHz MSM 7200 CPU is running the show.

Palm, i-mate, and MWG go back to HTC for ODM handset orders

Ever since our favorite little ODM cut their manufacturing-strings and started hocking their wares under their own global brand, HTC has blossomed into the Windows Mobile smartphone manufacturer that we all knew it would be.

Now that HTC has their own-branded line of mobile phones, their ODM business accounted for less than 10% of their Q4 2007 revenues. It seems that HTC is only keeping their ODM business as a sideline revenue stream, they obviously don’t need it.

On the other hand, the likes of Palm (NSDQ: PALM), i-mate, and MWG do need HTC’s WinMo smartphone prowess. DigiTimes is reporting that Palm, MWG, and once HTC-spurning i-mate are going back to HTC as their ODM source. All the new ODM handset orders should boost HTC’s 1Q 2008 ODM-revenue to over 10% of their quarterly earnings.

HTC’s just growing and growing. With 10-12 handsets planned for a 2008 release, we can’t wait to see what they do next.

i-mate working on a Foleo-like device?

i-mate is reportedly working on a “shell” device that will feature a 1024×768 display (7 inch?), the full QWERTY keyboard and a battery that can last 80 hours. While this sounds to good to be truth, and somehow reminds us on Palm (NSDQ: PALM)’s cancelled project (Foleo), this time we’re bit more optimistic.

First of all, I DO think there’s a room for a device that could fit somewhere between the full-blown laptop and a smartphone/PDA. The problem is that such a device should be affordable — after all, it IS the third device for most people. i-mate’s “shell” should apparently cost around $300 and rely on the smartphone to do all the processing and storage. Guess, they want to bundle their Ultimate phones with these “things.” Now, that’s something I don’t like, although I can imagine corporate customers loving it.

As usual, nothing is still confirmed, but that never stopped us from speculating.

i-mate Ultimate 8502 and 9502 coming in late December/early January with full QWERTY keyboards!

With the i-mate Ultimate 6150 already approved by the FCC and the Ultimate 8150 just recently getting the FCC-greenlight, i-mate is poised to make a big splash in the high-end US Windows Mobile smartphone market. The Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional-powered Ultimate 8150 and 6150 are slated to launch in November with those blazing-fast 520Mhz CPU, HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, 2 megapixel cameras, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, TV-out, and that glorious VGA display.

Well, the good folks over at the i-mate booth (#133) here at CTIA San Francisco were kind enough to let us in a few details. It seems the highly-anticipated i-mate Ultimate 7150 has been put on the back-burner while i-mate and Arima work to “develop the platform further.” Sounds to us like the Ultimate 7150 has been nixed from the product lineup. Those previous rumors of the Ultimate lineup getting the ax may have been based on some truth – it seems i-mate has chosen to go a slightly different route with a portion of their lineup.

Most notably, there were two new beautiful Ultimate models available for some playtime. The i-mate Ultimate 8502 and 9502 are both Windows Mobile 6.0-powered jobbies – the Ultimate 8502 is a monoblock handset with a full-QWERTY keyboard below the display, while the Ultimate 9502 rocks a spring-loaded sliding-keyboard, a la Sidekick Slide. The VGA resolution displays were amazing, and we came away with a positive impression of both devices – solidly built, and up to par with Stefan’s “denser is better” philosophy. The white-backlit keys on both the Ultimate 8502 and 9502 are nice and easy on the eyes, and did we mention the amazing VGA display? Well, it’s trick.

The i-mate reps indicated that the i-mate Ultimate 8502 and 9502 could be on schedule for a “late 4Q delivery” – possibly by December 23 or early January at the latest. We can’t wait to get our hands on review units of these bad boys. The Ultimate 8150 and 6150 review units are on the way (ETA: a “couple” weeks), and the Ultimate 8502 and 9502 review units will be shipping shortly thereafter. Make sure to keep checking back for more details on the hot, QWERTY-packing Ultimate 8502 and 9502 smartphones soon!

Microsoft launches System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 – pushing mobile enterprise mobile to the edge

So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned…

In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” – Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T (NYSE: T) and Sprint (NYSE: S) to bring

Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data – in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008.

IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection – affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset – they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP email, and camera functionality.

AT&T and Sprint have signed on to make their lineup of Windows Mobile devices compatible with Mobile Device Manager starting early next year. New devices with Mobile Device Manager support are expected to be available in 2Q 2008 from HP, HTC, i-mate, Intermec, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Inc. and Samsung – with service partner Avanade, CSC, EDS, Getronics, HP and TCS supporting Mobile Device Manager.

Microsoft seems to be taking aim squarely at RIM’s BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Enterprise services. With the level of device integration and control that System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 brings, RIM had better step up it’s game if it wants to hold onto its position as a powerhouse in the mobile enterprise game. And, with RIM’s servers taking nose dives every so often, Windows Mobile should be looking even more attractive to corporate IT departments everywhere.

FCC approves i-mate Ultimate 8150

Following on i-mate’s launch of its Ultimate lineup of Windows Mobile 6.0-powered smartphones with the i-mate Ultimate 6150 and 8150, the FCC has just approved the i-mate Ultimate 8150 – and not a moment too soon, these bad-boys are slated to start shipping pretty soon.

The Ultimate 8150, from ODM Arima, will rock the same high-end goodies that the Ultimate lineup is known for – Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional, HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, VGA display, 2 megapixel camera, 520Mhz CPU, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, TV-out. And that just a taste of what the Ultimate lineup offers.

I-mate’s new JAMA 101/201 handsets look familiar, complement Ultimate lineup

It looks like i-mate is looking to give its i-mate JAMA some much needed low-end company. If you’ll recall (or not), the entry-level JAMA smartphone from i-mate was a lackluster Windows Mobile 5.0 aimed at the mass-market. It didn’t have WiFi, 3G, or even EDGE radios, and only worked on two GSM frequencies (dual-band).

Well, i-mate’s at it again with a couple new entry-level JAMA handsets – and they look pretty damn familiar, don’t they? The i-mate JAMA 101 and JAMA 201 get slightly bumped-up spec sheets in order to try and bring up the low-end of i-mate’s lineup – right below the i-mate Ultimate series smartphones.

Both the i-mate JAMA 101 and i-mate JAMA 201 feature a 2-megapixel camera, tri-band (900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM with EDGE, microSD card slot, and Windows Mobile 6.0. Like we said, the spec-sheet was slightly upgraded – so there’s still no 3G or WiFi, but at least we get some WinMo6 goodness.

The i-mate JAMA 101 rocks a WM6 Professional-powered touchscreen, while the i-mate JAMA 201 rocks a full-QWERTY keyboard. And they both fail to pique our interest. At least the US won’t have to bother with this rousing disappointment, seeing as how it doesn’t include 850Mhz-support. Just bring on the rest of the Ultimate lineup, will ya, i-mate?

The i-mate Ultimate lineup of Windows Mobile 6.0-powered smartphones kicks off its lineup with the official launch of the i-mate Ultimate 6150 and Ultimate 8150.

We brought you the preview of the Ultimate 8150 and, as expected, the Ultimate 6150 is accompanying the 8150 on the launch. Both phones will be rocking that cool black finish and the backlit keypad, but it doesn’t end there. The i-mate Ultimate 8150 and 6150 are packin’ a blazing 520Mhz processor, 2.6 inch VGA (!) touchscreen display, 3.6Mbps HSDPA, 256MB ROM/128MB RAM, TV-out, FM radio, microSD slot, 2 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth 2.0.

They’re basically the same device, as the pictures clearly show, but the Ultimate 8150 rocks the keypad, whereas the Ultimate 6150 will go sans keypad in favor of an all-touchscreen setup.

Unfortunately, the Ultimate duo is only launching in the Middle East – which makes sense in light of ce4arab’s hands-on preview of the 8150. We’ll keep an ear to the grapevine for more developments on the Ultimate lineup. Stay tuned!
