Kyocera unveiled a few new ruggedized smartphones at CTIA, and we recently got our hands on the Hydro Xtrm – a device that’s both waterproof and shock-proof. The Hydro Xtrm will be released on U.S. Cellular starting on May 24th, and will run on U.S. Cellular’s 4G LTE network.

The Hydro Xtrm sports a dual-core Snapdragon 1.2 GHz processor, a 5 Megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 Megapixel front-facing shooter. It also includes 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, which is expandable to 32 GB via a microSD card. It also boasts Kyocera’s Smart Sonic Receiver technology, which boosts audio clarity and quality.

The Hydro Xtrm operates on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and was surprisingly fast considering the mid-range spec sheet. The 4-inch IPS WVGA display is very sharp and clear, and showed no signs of lag or slowdown while navigating through the app drawer or home screen panels. The device felt comfortable to hold in the hand, and even though the device had some heft to it, it didn’t feel too heavy.

The Kyocera Hydro Xtrm is now available online for $29.99 after a mail-in rebate and a new two-year service agreement, and will be available in U.S. Cellular stores on May 24th.

We got our hands on a few new Kyocera handsets today at CTIA 2013 in Las Vegas, one of them being the ruggedized and waterproof Kyocera Hydro Edge. It’s predecessor, the Kyocera Hydro was announced last year at CTIA 2012 in New Orleans. The Hydro Edge continues Kyocera’s ruggedized, waterproof mid-range smartphone model, and brings it up to 2013 with more powerful specs and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

The specs of the device are not super impressive by today’s standards, but are functional nonetheless. The Kyocera Hydro Edge packs a dual-core 1 GHz processor, a 5 MP rear facing camera, 4-inch WVGA display and tempered glass. The device also touts Kyocera’s Smart Sonic Receiver, which utilizes bone conduction technology to transmit sound in the noisiest of environments.

Even with the mid-range spec sheet, the Hydro Edge was snappy and responsive, and it’s rubberized back was non-obtrusive and felt comfortable to hold in the hand. I wasn’t able to connect the device to Wi-Fi however, but scrolling through the homescreen and opening apps showed no signs of lag. It’s a snappy little device for sure, and will be great for those who are often in extreme conditions, or have little ones running around anxious to play Angry Birds.

The Kyocera Hydro Edge will be launching on Boost Mobile and Sprint this summer. Pricing was not available, but will be aimed at the lower echelon for certain. If you’re looking for a rugged device at an affordable price point, this could be the smartphone for you.

The ultra rugged Kyocera Torque will be arriving on Sprint’s network on March 8th, priced at $99 with a two-year service agreement. The Torque is the first handset to offer 4G LTE service and Sprint Direct Connect push-to-talk service with an ultra-rugged design.

The Torque features a 4-inch IPS display and a dual-core processor, and will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Usually, rugged handsets are stuck with older versions of Android, limiting some of their functionality. But with Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Torque, fans of Android’s Holo theme and features will be happy.

The specs on the Kyocera Torque are those of a mid-range device. It sports a 5 megapixel rear camera, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and a 2,500 mAh battery. This handset can withstand 10 straight days of 95 percent humidity, six hours of heavy dust, and submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. The Torque is also rated to run in -4 degrees to 122 degrees F temperatures for three hours.

Also included in this device is the Kyocera Smart Sonic Receiver, which is a “proprietary tissue-conduction audio technology” which transmits sound to your eardrum and inner ear through body tissues, enabling users in noisy areas to be able to hear their calls. This rugged phone will no doubt be a favorite among construction workers and the like who need the functionality of a smartphone while working in dirty and loud environments.

The rugged Kyocera Torque Android smartphone will be available from Sprint on March 8th, the carrier announced. Available for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate via reward card, the LTE-enabled device is made for folks living an active lifestyle or those who don’t want to worry when it’s accidentally dropped on concrete, in water and so on.

In that sense, Kyocera’s baby is built to MilSpec 810G standard to withstand dust, shock, vibration, solar radiation, humidity, blowing rain, low pressure, salt fog and extreme temperatures; and IP67 standard for dust, sprayed water and full immersion of up to one meter deep for up to 30 minutes. Moreover, it’s also one of the first devices to use Kyocera’s Smart Sonic Receiver technology, which transmits sounds not only as traditional sound waves, but also as vibrations carried by body tissue directly to the eardrum and inner ear to improve sound clarity even in the noisiest environments.

And to fire-up the sales, Sprint hired Bear Grylls to promote the new phone. Under the deal contract, he’ll be taking the Torque on a series of “adventures” ranging from biting snow, spraying water and mud to a day of splashing in a water park full of kids. Then, at the end of the day, Kyocera’s phone will join the ultimate survivor in bed as he goes to sleep in <del>the middle of a jungle</del> some of the world’s fanciest hotels… You can follow Grylls’ journey from a dedicated YouTube channel.
