Kyocera unveils 3 new phones for the U.S. market: SCP-6760 Incognito, S2300 Torino and S1310 Domino

Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) announced three new phones for the U.S. market, with two of them targeting heavy texters. From left to right, they are:

SCP-6760 Incognito – it’s actually a Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY)-branded sideways clamshell that combines a touchscreen (2.6-inch QVGA) with full QWERTY keyboard. In addition, there’s the so called “glow-thru” keypad and OLED secondary display, as well as 3G radio, Bluetooth 2.0, 2-megapixel camera, threaded messaging support, and microSD memory card slot. Sprint (NYSE: S) has picked up the Incognito and will start offering it on November 30th.
S2300 Torino – another QWERTY phone, this time in candybar form. Specs include a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, threaded messaging, speakerphone, and 1xRTT data. It should be available in February 2010.
S1310 Domino – basic candybar with tri-band CDMA radio, 1xRTT data, Bluetooth, WAP browser, speakerphone. Should be available in December.

And that’s it from Kyocera. Nothing high-end-ish, just something for the mass market.

Oh yeah, and the vast majority have WVGA displays and infrared support. Man, it’s a whole other universe over in Japan. The Bravia-branded phone is pretty slick, and the only other time we’ve seen optical zoom on a 12 megapixel cameraphone was on the Samsung W880. Overall, a solid winter lineup from KDDI – I just wish we had something comparable over here.

Kyocera Android phone coming next year, LTE phones in 2011

Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) unveiled bits of its strategy to the world. Apparently, the Japanese company plans to introduce its first Android-powered smartphone at some point next year. In addition, they also said they will be unveiling a dual-mode CDMA/LTE device in 2011, which will rely on some of the existing platforms — again, Android is mentioned.

If I were at Kyocera, I would make sure to have something to show off at the upcoming 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. In that sense, I’m hoping they and other companies will have more on display. Can’t wait for February…

Kyocera Concept Changes Display Based on Activity

On top of showing a fancy foldable UMPC concept, Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) has some design photos of a phone called the NXT with a context-sensitive display. Controls change depending on whether you’re playing a video game or watching a movie. The real usefulness would rely on how seamlessly the phone transitioned between modes – after all, there are plenty of third party apps that can do this sort of stuff already, but the biggest hurdle is readily accessing them. To be fair, the UMPC is a little more, shall we say, avant garde, but the phone looks like something that is actually feasible with current technology. Kyocera isn’t exactly renown for their high-end handsets, however, so this might be little more than a creative pipe dream.

Kyocera Communications Inc. established in San Diego to integrate the company’s wireless device business

At the CTIA, Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) Corporation announced the formation of Kyocera Communications Inc. (KCI), as a “next step in the global integration of Kyocera’s wireless device business.” The new company will be headquartered in San Diego, and will comprise the combined sales, marketing and service functions from Kyocera Wireless Corp. (KWC) and Kyocera Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Telecom Inc. (KSTI), to better manage those functions for all Kyocera- and Sanyo-branded wireless devices in the Americas.

KCI’s formation is the latest step in the global integration of Kyocera’s communication equipment product segment, a segment that began in 1979 in Japan. Looking to expand globally, Kyocera purchased the wireless handset business of Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) Inc. in 2000 and created KWC from its assets. Then, in April 2008, Kyocera acquired the wireless handset business of Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (Sanyo) and created KSTI from Sanyo’s North American team, which was headquartered in Chatsworth, Calif. On January 29, Kyocera announced that the global coordination of Kyocera’s communication equipment product segment will take place at the company’s product-line headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. Within the new structure, KCI will be Kyocera’s wireless sales, marketing, customer engineering and service operation for the Americas, representing virtually all products from the communication equipment product segment. Meanwhile, the remaining portion of KWC will focus on engineering, working closely with its counterparts in Yokohama.

Eiichi Toriyama, who joined Kyocera in 1972 and has spent 37 years in sales and marketing, has been appointed as president of KCI. Commenting on his appointment and on the company’s restructuring move, Toriyama said: “There is great strength in the combined global forces of Kyocera and Sanyo’s mobile device groups and KCI represents the new face of this unified business for the Americas. Not only are we streamlining duplicated functions within the organization, but also we are creating synergies with unified, complementary product and technology roadmaps that will ultimately benefit our customers.”

Kyocera unveils G2GO M2000 QWERTY phone and Laylo M1400 slider

Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) has unveiled two new CDMA phones at the CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas: the full QWERTY keyboard equipped G2GO M2000, aka Virgin Mobile Kyocera X-tc; and Laylo M1400 slider.

The first of the two looks more interesting, thanks to the mentioned keyboard, which makes the device a texter’s dream phone. Other specs include 2.4-inch QVGA screen, media player with dedicated music keys, 1.3 megapixel camera, built-in accelerometer (for auto-rotation, I guess), Bluetooth support, and of course a microSD memory card slot. Size wise, the G2GO M2000 measures 113×52x17 mm, and has a weight of 120 grams.

As for the slider device, there’s a 2.2-inch QVGA screen on board, Bluetooth, VGA camera, and the speaker-independent voice recognition. In terms of size, the Laylo M1400 has dimensions of 94.7×46.7×17.0 mm and weight of 90 grams.

While we know Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) will launch the Kyocera X-tc later this month, we’ve no idea whether some carrier will pick up the Laylo. We’ll certainly have more to share in the coming weeks…

The Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) X-tc on Virgin Mobile spotted last month is now available to order for $99 off contract, and butting heads with the recently-launched Alltel Banter/Sprint Rumor 2 for discount texting supremacy. Spec-wise, the sliders are in the same ballpark, so plans will really be the dealbreaker on those considering both devices.

Just in time for the Virgin Mobile Festival, the MVNO has announced a special edition of its Wild Card phone. The so called Virgin Mobile Festival Special Edition Wild Card is pretty much the same as the original Wild Card, except that it comes with 50 music downloads from eMusic and a one-year subscription to SPIN Magazine. In addition, lucky 15,000 customers who buy the device will all have special access to the Virgin Mobile Guest Lounge at the festival, where they’ll be able to chat with the man himself, Sir Richard Branson.

Finally, even though this is the special edition device, the price remains the same. It’s available through July 31 exclusively at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores for $99.99.

Kyocera jumps into GSM market; Announces 4 handsets

Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) announced its entry into the GSM handset market with four new GSM phones. The new devices will launch initially in Latin America, where a number of CDMA service providers recently switched to GSM networks.

Four handsets are:

E4600 – slider-shaped quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) device; features MP3 player, 2-megapixel camera with video record/playback, Bluetooth, expandable memory and a 2.2-inch display.
E3500 – Also supporting MP3 and video record/playback, the quad-band E3500 has a clamshell form factor with external music controls, dual color displays, a 1.3-megapixel camera, expandable memory and Bluetooth.
E2500 – an ultra-slim candybar-style quad-band phone with an MP3 player, 1.3-megapixel camera with video record/playback, Bluetooth and expandable memory.
S1600 – low-end dual-band candybar with a VGA camera.

Kyocera has already begun shipping to customers in Latin America and retail launches will be announced on a carrier-by-carrier basis in the weeks and months ahead… Full release is available from here.

Kyocera unveils three CDMA phones

We always envisioned Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) as a low-end handset maker and they seem to like just the way it is. That being said their latest CDMA line-up doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Few lines are tweaked, but basically all their new phones are considered low-end. Let’s roll:

Neo E1100: 2.2 inch QVGA display, Bluetooth 2.0, BREW, 1.3 MP camera and a hidden OLED out display
Mako S4000: two screens (inner is 1.8-inch), VGA camera, BREW, Bluetooth
Adreno S2400: 1.8 inch screen, external caller ID display, BREW, no camera at all

Next, we expect Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) or perhaps Alltel to pick one of these and offer it for free or next to nothing.

Sanyo and Kyocera seal the deal – Sanyo selling mobile phone unit to Kyocera

It’s been a long time in the making and we’re glad to hear that long-rumored Sanyo buy-out candidate Kyocera has finally sealed the deal with Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY). As you may recall, Sanyo’s mobile phone unit has struggled to turn a profit, and so put their cellphone-manufacturing arm on the auction block. Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) is said to be putting up $378 – $472 million to take Sanyo’s mobile phone manufacturing unit of its hands – making the the world’s 6th largest mobile phone maker.

Now, the deal is expected by some to help boost Kyocera’s market share and presence on the global market. Still, there are analysts that don’t see any benefit in a deal between two low-key market players. Japan’s mobile phone industry is incredibly fragmented (there are no fewer than 10 cellphone manufacturers in the island-nation), and has failed to gain a foothold in the face of larger global players like Nokia, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and Samsung.

Kyocera is liking blowing their $378 – $472 million wad to gain that 6th place ranking, and not much more. Good luck with that whole market-share nonsense.

Verizon just launched the new Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) KPC680 ExpressCard allowing interested parties to access the carrier’s fast EV-DO Rev. A network and take their Internet work/play with them, wherever they are. According to the official release — which follows after the jump — BroadbandAccess users can expect average download speeds of 600kbps to 1.4Mbps, and upload speeds ranging from 500kbps to 800kbp.

Kyocera is especially proud of KPC680’s uniquely designed antenna that apparently provides greater sensitivity, while keeping a compact form factor. Hmmm… it does look interested, but “breakthrough” is not the word I would use…

Virgin Mobile USA adds Kyocera’s Wild Card; Heavy texters rejoice

Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) is known to target young people who are usually on a budget when it comes to mobile phone purchases. Hence, most of their phones are somewhere in the low-to-mid range.

Lately, they’ve added a new device to support heavy SMS users on their network – Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) Wireless’ Wild Card. Although we found it’s far from a “superior handset” their release is stating, the Wild Card DOES pack some interesting features for only $99.99. Aside from the full QWERTY keyboard that is probably THE raison d’être of this device, the Kyocera’s handset also packs Bluetooth connectivity, dual screens (internal is 128×160 pixel), 1.3 MP camera with 3x digital zoom, integrated speakerphone, and WAP 2.0 Web browser.

TelePark buys Sanyo’s mobile phone sales division

Wow, it really looks like Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) is offloading all of it’s mobile phone divisions. The latest mobile phone arm to take new ownership is Sanyo’s mobile phone sales division. TelePark Corp. has ponied up 4.8 billion yen ($41.6 million) to Sanyo for the mobile phone manufacturer’s sales department.

We should make it clear that TelePark has not acquired Sanyo’s mobile phone division – that would go to Kyocera. However, this deal just confirms that Sanyo wants out of the mobile phone business and that Sanyo will most likely be offloading their mobile phone infrastructure to Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) – making them a true global player.

We’ll keep an eye on this space for you guys. We’re excited to see what Kyocera brings us in the next few development cycles.

Kyocera prepping to buy Sanyo’s mobile phone division

Remember when we told you that Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) wanted out of the mobile phone manufacturing business? Well, it seems they’ve found a suitor to take their not-so-blushing mobile phone division off their hands. Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to buy Sanyo’s in-the-red handset business.

If the acquisition goes through, we could see the creation of the 7th largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world – a definite boost for Kyocera. Word has it that Kyocera will be ponying up 50 billion yen ($435 million) to Sanyo, which should help ease the ailing company’s three-year streak of red-ink.

We’ll keep you updated on how this deal goes down. In the super-competitive market that is the mobile phone business, we wouldn’t be surprised if Kyocera backed out at the last minute, fearing too much risk in the Sanyo acquisition. On the flip side, Kyocera would instantly come into established infrastructure, helping make Kyocera a stronger global player. Stay tuned!

Qualcomm’s 3G chips banned from US import – Wireless carriers affected!

The latest Intellectual Patent battle, this time between Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) (who else?) and Broadcom, has resulted in the International Trade Commission (ITC) decision to ban Qualcomm from importing chipsets designed for use in 3G handsets into the US. The ruling follows a complaint, filed by Broadcom, that Qualcomm’s chip design was infringing on Broadcom (NSDQ: BRCM)’s IP in regards to the high-end chipsets. This ban will affect a range of wireless carriers and handset manufacturers – Verizon, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Samsung, LG, and Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) Wireless.

While the ruling allows for the continued sale of handsets that have already been manufactured with the Qualcomm chips, no new handset will be admitted within US borders. However, the ITC’s decision can still be overturned, or modified, by the President. Qualcomm and Verizon have already announced that they will ask the George W. Bush to overturn the ruling, and will ask federal courts to issue a stay until the President can look into this debacle.

We can’t say that we feel sorry for Qualcomm – the word “karma” comes to mind. Qualcomm has been relentlessly pursuing Nokia over the past few months, and now the US chipmaker seems to be getting their “just desserts.” It’s really too bad that the playground-feuding between these tech firms has now affected the innocent consumer.

We’re just happy that the 3G-less Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone launch won’t be affected by this new ruling.

Near Field Communications (NFC) technology has really been getting some push from developers recently. The new Bluetooth 2.1 EDR protocol made some provisions for NFC technology to make pairing your Bluetooth 2.1 devices as easy as bringing the two together. Now Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) is developing this tech to free us of our wallets. Kyocera showcased their NFC tech with the Visa mobile platform – giving you wallet-free purchasing power with the not-so-proverbial wave of the hand. Bringing the phone close to a ‘payment slot’ automatically debits or charges your account, completing the transaction.

But what happens when you lose track of your mobile phone (or, more seriously, have it stolen)? When you lose your wallet, you can just call your financial institutions and report the lose. But what if the wallet is now also your phone? You not only have no way to pay for the bus ride home, but you also have no way to call up your bank to prevent fraudulent charges. We’re going to let this tech go through some field testing before we jump on board.

Kyocera (NYSE: KYO), a leading manufacturer of CDMA devices, just announced five new-look handsets from its 2007 product lineup at the CTIA Wireless 2007 trade show. Let’s start by introducing each one of them briefly…

Kyocera E5000 is an elegant, slim handset featuring a new kind of clamshell design – patent-pending sculpted “S” hinge made of stainless steel. This device sports a high-speed 1xEV-DO, a 1.3 MP camera, a 2″ QCIF+ internal TFT display, the touch-sensitive external music controls, a Bluetooth with A2DP support and its memory is expandable with microSD cards. The E5000 will be available in the fall this year.

Kyocera E1000 is stylish low-end device that boasts a 1.3 MP camera and a Bluetooth connectivity. The E1000 uses cost-effective CDMA2000 1xRTT technology, and is set to be released this summer.

For SMS junkies, Kyocera prepared its M1000 model that comes with a full QWERTY keypad. Interesting thing about the M1000, it can be used in both open and closed mode. The device also packs a 1.3 MP camera, two TFT displays (internal – 1.8″, external – 1.5″), and will hit the carriers’ offerings on summer 2007.

Kyocera S1000 is a real low-end device. If you need an affordable handset, you can’t get many phones that will be more affordable than the S1000. It’s designed for someone who simply wants to make a call and doesn’t want to pay anything extra for features they may not use. Availability: summer 2007.
