One standout feature of this FCC document is the rendering which suggests the XT1058 is the mystery Motorola X phone (XFON) that keeps appearing in the rumor mill. Compare the leaked photo below and the rendering from the FCC above — you have to admit that the phones look very similar.

Besides physical resemblances, this latest spotting at the FCC also jives with earlier reports that the XFON handset may be slated for AT&T. The latest information on the XT1058 reveals that it includes support for AT&T’s flavor of LTE as well as its 2G, 3G and HSPA networks. Patience is a must as we likely won’t find out more about the XFON at Google I/O and will have to wait until later this year for additional details to emerge.

Google I/O is only days away, and it’s looking like we won’t be seeing the heavily rumored Motorola X-Phone making a debut at the conference. In fact, new analyst reports are reporting that Google has distanced itself from the project, leaving Motorola to develop the device on its own. Google is said to be taking a back seat on the X-Phone project because it isn’t up to its standards.

The X-Phone is has been getting much attention, with rumors flying about the device for some time now. The rumors are all over the place, claiming various specs that seem too good to be true. We have seen various picture leaks of the device, including one from last week which depicted a black boxy Motorola device, which raised eyebrows due to the model number on the back, “XFON.”

The device, which was to be a joint effort between Motorola and Google may still be in the works, but without the help of Google. The new rumors suggest that Google turned down the project and deferred it to Motorola for further testing and development. Motorola won’t need to start from scratch, at least.

We are still not sure what to expect from the X-Phone project, but it looks like we will not be seeing it at Google I/O this year. What are your thoughts on the Motorola X-Phone?

But the device resembles an unnamed Motorola device that we have seen before, which received a teardown and had specs that were far below what the rumored X Phone are expected to have.

From the pictures we can see that the device is running on AT&T’s network and even has a few AT&T apps in its app drawer. We can’t tell much about the device’s design as it is in either a case or a shell, except that it is black and rather boxy. But we do get a clear shot of the back of the device, with XFON ATT used for the model number.

Only time will tell if this is the rumored X Phone or another one of Motorola’s upcoming offerings.

At Google’s earnings announcement today, CEO Larry Page dropped a few very interesting hints about the upcoming slate of phones coming from Motorola. Page intimated that the new crop of phones from Motorola will impress:

“In today’s multi-screen world, the opportunities are endless. Think about your device. Battery life is a challenge for most people. You shouldn’t need to carry around a charger with you to make it through the day. If your kids spill their drink on your tablet, the screen shouldn’t die. And when you drop your phone, it shouldn’t shatter.

There’s a real potential to invent new and better experiences – ones that are much faster and more intuitive. Having just seen Motorola’s upcoming products myself, I’m really excited to see the potential there. in just under a year, they’ve accomplished a lot and have impressive velocity and execution.”

Google acquired Motorola last year, hoping to revitalize the struggling manufacturer. Under Google’s watchful eye, Motorola’s been cooking up a new batch of phones, and the rumor mill has been working overtime. Tales of Burly “X-phones“, just-right “Goldilocks Phones” and other predictions abound. Page’s statements certainly intrigue, but don’t provide the hard facts about the new Motorola line we’re all dying for.

We’ve already heard that the new offerings will feature stock (or near stock) versions of Android, which is great news. Page’s hints about tougher phones with increased battery life and ultra-durable screens only increase the curiosity about what’s coming down the pipeline from Motorola.

Verizon is continuing to roll out its 4G LTE service in suburban and rural areas, covering over 95% of its 3G service areas with 4G LTE. Verizon plans on delivering 4G LTE service to every one of its 3G markets by the middle of this year, and is in good shape to do so.

Verizon now provides its 4G LTE coverage to 287 million customers, and boasts that 40 percent of their phones are now 4G capable and that 54 percent of its data traffic flows over its 4G LTE network. A few of the 4G LTE compatible smartphones that Verizon offers are the HTC DROID DNA, Motorola DROID RAZR HD, LG Lucid 2, and the HTC Windows Phone 8X.

With manufacturers like Samsung releasing a plentiful bounty of smartphones and phablets in different screen sizes, Motorola is planning on finding just the right balance of screen size and functionality. Motorola is developing a “Goldilocks phone” which will be easily operated with one hand, and as close to stock Android as possible. The theory here is to provide a quality handset and unify Motorola’s different features that are spread across multiple lines into one device, unifying Motorola’s brand.

Since Motorola’s acquisition by Google last year, rumors of Google and Motorola working together on a “superphone” have been flying, with Motorola releasing a few devices along the way, such as last fall’s updated Razr line. Google had no hand in the development of these smartphones, and even criticized Motorola for a lack of “wow factor.” How closely Google and Motorola will be working together on their new offering remains to be seen, but the new plan to unify Motorola’s offerings into one package seems a bit Googly to me.

“There are some people that like a big display, but there’s also a lot of people that want something that’s just about right. I think ‘just right’ is important, and we’re designing so we don’t disappoint those people,” said Jim Wicks, Motorola’s chief of design.

Wicks is promising a smooth and speedy Android experience, free of bloatware at the core. He stated, “it will be the unadulterated version of Android, and I feel really good about our embracing Android and being the best Android experience.” Carriers will still be allowed to throw their own customization over the phone though, which is not surprising, especially if the device is to launch on Verizon, the kings of bloatware.

Motorola also wants to play down the “spec wars” that are raging in the mobile market today. As devices become more powerful, specs are almost becoming irrelevant, with software and functionality taking center stage. This is something Motorola certainly acknowledges, and is important in developing the next generation of smartphones.

The first Google inspired Motorola “Goldilocks phones” should be rolling out in the second half of 2013. So sit tight, Droid fans, we’ll keep you updated. What do you think of Motorola’s new direction and handsets? Will you eat Motorola’s porridge? Only if it’s just right.

We do hear that the device is still in the early prototype phase, boasting specs that include a 4.7-inch 1080p screen, Android 4.2 and a ton of built-in storage to compensate for the lack of a microSD memory card slot.

One thing is certain, we can’t wait to try out the Motorola X once it’s out and in the meantime, we’ll keep watching for the latest rumors coming from Mountain View. Stay tuned…
