Japanese handset makers have seen better days. Just when we reported that Panasonic may be looking for a buyer for its mobile phone business, another company has apparently also found itself in the same position. It’s NEC, which may be in talks to sell its mobile phone division to Lenovo as we speak.

The Japanese company has been losing money on its phone sales for two years and now it wants to do something about it. And since it already has a partnership with Lenovo in a joint venture to produce computers in Japan, the high-level contacts are already there so I guess now it’s all about finding the right conditions (read: price).

Needless to say, NEC and its partner Casio, didn’t comment on rumors, though they did say that they haven’t “discounted any partners in negotiations, including domestic firms.” Not sure which Japanese company is ready to add NEC’s products to its portfolio, but what do we know – perhaps Sony could jump-in, perhaps not. In any case, we do hope that NEC’s two-faced Medias W won’t be lost as part of any deal. We do need novel form factors and NEC has shown us it can deliver on that front. We’ll let you know when we hear something new on this…

It is likely that the two Japanese handset makers will initially unveil phones in their own backyard where customers will be able to grab them from NTT DoCoMo, one of the companies that have a seat at Tizen Association’s Board of Directors. Other companies with a representative on the board include Samsung, Intel, Huawei, Panasonic, Vodafone, Orange, Sprint, SK Telecom and KT.

As I’m writing this we don’t have a single image of a Tizen device to show you, but you can see how Tizen menus will look like from the screenshot above. Hopefully, additional information will be released shortly when we’ll get back to you with everything we’ve got. Stay tuned in the meantime…

I wanted to try out the NEC Medias W more than any other phone at Mobile World Congress. We’ve already talked about it in the past, but this was the first time I had a chance to play with a single unit.

As you may know, NEC’s baby is a folding smartphone that comes with two 4.3-inch screens. The best part is that these two can either work separately (for real multi-tasking) or as one big screen.

The similar lookin’ Kyocera Echo was released few years ago but it hasn’t managed to attract enough buyers. The NEC Medias W is a better device and it will soon starts selling in one of the world’s most-advanced smartphone markets (Japan), bringing all the benefits of a big screen device (phablet) without forcing users to buy jeans with bigger pockets.

Aside from showing off NTT DoCoMo’s version of the phone, NEC also had some prototype unit at its booth, presumingly to pitch other carriers. And while we don’t have any information whether some European carrier is looking to launch the Medias W, we do hope something like that will happen at some point in the future. In the meantime, check out our hands-on images from a gallery below…

NEC Medias Tab UL N-08D is an amazing device and one of those products most of us won’t be able to buy. Again, it’s a Japan-only product and it’s likely it won’t make it to the Western hemisphere.

There are 2 things that make the NEC Medias Tab UL N-08D an amazing product:

At 250 grams, it’s the world’s lightest 7-inch tablet

It comes with awesome haptic technology

The second thing is pretty interesting. The technology called HD Reverb is used to create complementary haptic effects in real-time. So when you’re watching a video, the device knows when to vibrate and (even more importantly) how much vibration is needed. I watched a fireworks video as a demo and was pretty amazed with what this tech can do.

As for the rest of specs, NEC’s baby sports a 7-inch WXGA (1280×800 pixels) touchscreen, Qualcomm’s MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, dual cameras (8.1MP on the back, 2MP front-facing one) and 16GB of built-in storage. Check out few hands-on photos we took…
