Rumor: Nokia’s next Symbian device will also be their last

This coming Saturday will mark the one year anniversary of the historic day when Stephen Elop, Nokia’s new CEO, got up on a stage in London and announced to the world that both Symbian and Maemo were going to be thrown under the bus, and that the future would be all about Windows Phone. One thing Stephen mentioned during that announcement was that Nokia still has plans to sell 150 million Symbian smartphones. That’s recently changed though. Late last month when Nokia reported their Q4 2011 financial results they said Read more

Skype for Nokia Belle phones is out

Skype has updated its app for Symbian Belle devices (version 2.1.23) like the Nokia 700, 701, 603 and many others that will get the new OS via a firmware update. The popular VoIP application now comes with Belle-like look and feel, while the overall performance has been significantly improved. You know that Skype is a must-have app on your smartphone, right? So if you have a compatible device, get it now. Sure there are other VoIP solutions out there, some of which are even cheaper to use. However, with most Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 pre-orders start at Microsoft

The highly anticipated Nokia Lumia 900 is now available for pre-order at Microsoft retail stores — all fifteen of them! Microsoft confirmed you can pre-order one of these devices for $25. That’s nice, but there’s still no release date or full price tag. Rumor has it the phone will launch on March 18th for a very aggressive $99 with a two-year contract on AT&T, but there’s no official word just yet. Once consumers realized Nokia made a winner in the Lumia 800 overseas, an imminent American counterpart only made sense Read more

Marko Ahtisaari, Head of Nokia Design: Future Windows Phones will have NFC, possibly wireless charging

When Nokia reported their Q4 2011 financial results last month there was one bit of news in there that we glossed over. Marko Ahtisaari, son of Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, had his title upgraded from Head of Nokia Design to Executive Vice President of Nokia Design. His responsibilities will stay the same, he’ll just bring home more bacon. Anyway, Marko recently sat down with The Guardian and let out some details about the future of Nokia’s devices. Let’s start with the obvious: Near Field Communication (NFC) will be Read more

T-Mobile shaves $10 off the Lumia 710, Microsoft giving them away on their site

T-Mobile launched the Lumia 710 for $50 on the 11th of January for $49.99 with a two year contract. Three weeks later, that price is now down to $39.99. Microsoft, who apparently has an online store that this author had no idea even existed, is also now selling the Lumia 710 … for free. That’s right, they’re giving it away with a two year contract. Earlier today we also saw a tweet from Eldar Murtazin, Editor in Chief of Mobile-Review, saying that the Lumia 710 is on sale in Russia Read more

Are handset makers delaying launches because of iPhone 4S demand?

I think it’s safe to say that the iPhone 4S was anything but the disappointment some bloggers and analysts originally expected. There’s endless articles on how much of a success Apple’s latest smartphone has been and demand has been so strong, in fact, rumors are now spouting that other handset manufacturers are pushing their phone launches until at least the Q2 2012. For their sake, hopefully the iPhone hype will cool down a bit by then. According to a report from DigiTimes, vendors from around the globe including Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Read more

Win one of five Nokia Lumia 710 phones on Facebook

Nokia is organizing a simple (yet global) contest on Facebook, giving away 5 Lumia 710 Windows Phones to randomly selected users. In order to participate, all you have to do is like Nokia’s Facebook page and then answer which of the 6 color options of the Lumia 710 you like the most. There’s Fuchsia on Black, Yellow on Black, Cyan on Black, Yellow on White, Fuchsia on White and my personal favorite – Cyan on White. The contest ends on Monday, 13 Feb 2012 16:00 EET, and in order to Read more

Rumor: Today’s Windows Phones will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8, codename Apollo

Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system is 15 months and 10 days old, and while it has failed to gain any meaningful traction in the smartphone market, one thing that we appreciate is Microsoft’s willingness to make sure that everyone’s device is up to date. In other words, if you picked up a Windows Phone on launch day then you’ve thus far received all the updates that the platform has received. Something tells us this will also be the case for Tango, the version of Windows Phone that’s slated to be Read more

Nokia to start pushing out Symbian Belle on February 8th?

Someone in Nokia’s Vietnam offices is about to get in a whole lot of trouble. Apparently a website that wasn’t supposed to go live accidentally did, and said website announced that Symbian Belle was going to be available for Symbian Anna users starting on the 8th of February. Note that we’ve already known for a while now that Belle would come out in February, we just didn’t have an exact date. The update requires that you connect your device to a computer, which is a minor niggle, but there are Read more

Review: Nokia Lumia 800: Microsoft doesn’t have to buy Nokia, they already did

Every time I visit Facebook my browser asks me if it should go ahead and translate the website. That’s what happens when you’ve been living in a foreign country for over four and a half years and nearly everyone you know speaks English as a second, and in most cases third, language. During my time in Finland I’ve made a lot of connections, especially at Nokia, where I worked between March 2008 and May 2009. The only reason I bring this up is because something incredible happened last year. Something Read more

Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million last quarter for Windows Phone

Nokia reported its quarterly earnings today and while most of us are wondering how many Windows Phone handsets it sold last quarter, our friends at PhoneScoop picked out an interesting fact: Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million in the quarter for “Platform Support Payments.” We had heard that Microsoft was paying Nokia billions to adopt Windows Phone as its main smartphone platform but this gives us a little insight into how this payment process is going to work. Microsoft licenses its Windows Phone software to handset makers but it’s clear that Read more
