Video: GSM Palm Pre unlocked with Rebel Simcard II

This one’s for our Europe-based Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre users who want to break-up with the exclusive Pre carrier in their country. Thanks to the Rebel Simcard II you can do just that, while paying only £10.99 ($17.95) for the pleasure. The mentioned card sits between your carrier’s SIM (that’s O2 (NYSE: TEF)) and the Pre’s SIM slot, bypassing network locks and allowing access to other network’s services, 3G data included.

Here’s how they did it (video) and before I let you go, I’m looking forward to see this repeated with the Pixi. That’s at least until Palm start selling its first webOS baby unlocked. Back to the clip…

Palm App Catalog now counts 300 titles

Palm (NSDQ: PALM) seems to struggle to get developers on board. The idea would be to sell the Pre and Pixi in more countries and engage the worldwide developer base, as the current strategy doesn’t seem to work. Their App Catalog now counts 300 titles, which is very, very poor. To be fair, webOS is a brand new platform and I guess it’s fair to give Palm some space, but something needs to be done, nonetheless.

In comparison, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s AppStore now counts 100,000 apps, whereas Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s Android Market goes for 10,000. C’mon Palm, start selling your phones in India and China and organize some contest to get some hot spanking apps in the Catalog. We want you to succeed, honestly!

Palm Pixi coming to Sprint on November 15th for $100 on a 2 year contract, minimum $70/month

The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pixi, which was announced during the beginning of September, but without information regarding pricing or availability, is now a little closer to Sprint (NYSE: S) customers grubby little hands. Quick recall of the specification sheet:

It’s coming to Sprint on November 15th for, and I’m going to quote this so I get it right: “It will cost just $99.99 with a two-year service agreement, after a $50 instant rebate and $100 mail-in rebate”. Why can’t they just let you have it for $99.99 out the door is beyond me. The cheapest plan that will get you this device will cost you $69.99/month; Sprint will not give you this thing without unlimited data.

GSM Palm Pre – Unlocked and available in the US

The GSM Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre has been available in the UK and Germany, bringing with it Palm’s intuitive multi-tasking webOS and multi-touch display. Here in the US, though, the only Palm Pre available comes in CDMA guise and works only on Sprint (NYSE: S)’s network. Fortunately, Americans can now get their hands on an unlocked GSM Palm Pre from Expansys – as long as they’re willing to make some sacrifices.

The GSM Palm Pre will ship with some O2 (NYSE: TEF) branding and lacks the frequency support to pull down 3G wireless data from AT&T (NYSE: T)’s network (nor T-Mobile (NYSE: DT)’s network). You still get the same 3.1-inch multi-touch display, 3-megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and 8GB of onboard storage that every Sprint Palm Pre user has been enjoying for months now. But, you’ll have to deal with a “QWERTZ” keyboard that swaps the “Y” and “Z” keys like those crazy Europeans like to do.

If you can deal with non-US branding, European 3G “banding,” and a quirky keyboard setup, Expansys will be happy to sell you an unlocked GSM Palm Pre for $714.99. The website shows the unit out of stock, but should be back within a week or so.

The Weather Channel has introduced yet another version of their very popular app. This time around it has been re-jigged for webOS, and is available right now in Beta in the App Catalog. The new ad-supported app joins its Android, BlackBerry and iPhone cousins as one of the more popular weather apps available today. In an effort to get some media attention prior to officially launching the Pixi, Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is offering two ways for users to win the upcoming device.

One way is to sign up on Palm’s Blog, and keep your fingers crossed you’ll be one of 25 lucky folks who will win the Pixi handset.

The other way is also a community building activity, which requires that you leave a comment on Palm’s Facebook page no later than November 14th. Here, however, you can win either the Pixi or Pre – simply write which of the two you want, and if you’re super lucky, you may get one.

Palm Pre coming to Verizon in early 2010

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) used its Twitter account @VZWOffers to announce that the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre will be hitting their network in early 2010. Talk about viral marketing and an effort to get more followers. I guess that information was retweeted and talked about on hundreds of blogs and forums around the web.

The addition of the Pre will effectively make Verizon even stronger. They will offer the Droid, Pre, Storm 2… A respectable portfolio, gotta admit.

Updated Palm Pre Axed from Sprint Inventory, Pixi Still There

Earlier this summer two items showed up in Sprint (NYSE: S) systems: the P120, which has now been unveiled as the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pixi, and the C40, presumed to be an updated 16 GB Palm Pre. Unfortunately, according to the latest screenshots of internal inventory, the C40 is nowhere to be found. Who knows if the C40 was actually a 16 GB Pre, or if it was just a little creative inference based on an inventory quirk, but it’s only the Pixi in there now. On the bright side, the Pixi is accompanied by all of those artist series battery covers and a new leather sleeve, which will likely be available at launch. The latest rumours are pointing to an October 20 release, a mere four days away; let’s see if that one pans out…

Popular Mechanics picks Palm Pre as one of 2009’s top gadgets

The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre is a great smartphone. It features some of the highest-end technology you can expect from any smartphone today – capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch, gesture controls, wireless (inductive) charging, true multi-tasking support and more. The Pre is also seen as the best alternative to the iPhone 3GS. So, it’s no wonder Popular Mechanics has named the Palm Pre one of “The 10 Most Brilliant Products of 2009.”

Unfortunately, no amount of praise is going to boost Palm’s ailing bottom line. The Palm Pre was touted as Palm’s answer to the struggling smartphone maker’s dwindling market share, but has yet to see the Pre capture consumer minds in the same way the iPhone has done for the past few years. But, with encouraging interest from the UK market, Palm might see the Pre out-performing the iPhone on O2 (NYSE: TEF)’s network.

Palm Pre goes live in the UK – less promo than iPhone had

Yep, today was/is the day when the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) pre goes live in the UK, and you can get your grubby/clean (I don’t know what your personal hygiene is like, do I?) mitts on one.

I figured it might be interesting to go take a wander to the local O2 (NYSE: TEF) shop in Staines at lunchtime, to see how much the Promo effort was in full swing – and what I actually was confronted with was Samsung Genio posters in the shop window – harrumph!

On looking around a bit more, I managed to find two videos promotions running on PDPs at the back of the store – not exactly ‘front of house’! A nice comparison is what happened when the iPhone 3GS launched – they had posters everywhere, in all O2 shops… so this tells me that either O2 aren’t expecting as much interest, or who knows – maybe they spent all of their print media budget and can’t make any more posters

On a marginally more serious note, it’s good to finally see Europe getting the Palm Pre – now if only Palm’s PR company in the UK would respond to our emails and give us a device or two to trial… (hint hint Palm PR!).

GSM Palm Pre Goes Live in Germany on O2

Congratulations to all of my German friends and colleagues, the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre has arrived! Folks in the country can grab the GSM Palm Pre for €481 (just over $700 USD) sans contract, or finance it with 24 monthly payments of €20 via something called ‘My Handy’. For all the details brush up on your German and head over to O2 Germany.

To coincide with the launch, O2 (NYSE: TEF) Germany has added a couple of apps to the Catalog for ‘Preebies’… a move that will certainly please the early Pre adopters in Germany. The apps include wetter.com, VZ-Netzwerke, ran and billiger.de. I’m sure the German audience loves the local flavor, along with the fact that each of the aforementioned apps are free.

Palm Pre demand outpaces intial iPhone demand in UK!

While the iPhone might be the most satisfying smartphone in the US, more and more Brits are looking toward the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre to quench their smartphone cravings. A new survey from TNS indicates that a healthy 26% of the UK is interested in picking up an O2 (NYSE: TEF) Palm Pre of their own – they are either definitely or probably going to buy an O2 Palm Pre in the near future. Compared with just 16% of Brits that were showed initial interest in the iPhone in TNS’s 2007 survey, it’s clear that the Palm Pre is in higher demand than the iPhone.

The survey also showed the 27% of current O2 customers were interested in picking up a Palm Pre. That compares with 17% of O2 customers that were looking to pick up an iPhone from their carrier in 2007. The numbers point to a UK Palm Pre launch that might just give the US launch some insecurity issues.

To be fair, the higher interest in the Palm Pre is likely attributable to the Pre’s free-on-contract pricing. The iPhone was offered for £269, and many of those initial iPhone customers are coming up on contract renewals that would allow them to put a Palm Pre in their pockets for free. There’s also the possibility that the iPhone itself may have boosted Palm Pre awareness by way of bringing the smartphone to forefront of the consumer mind.

The Palm Pre hasn’t been the fantastic success that Palm had hoped for the US market, but all is not lost. If TNS survey results pan out, Palm could see the Pre carving out significant market share in the UK.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this is the start of week 42 of 2009, meaning that there are only 10 weeks left until the start of a new decade. Pretty exciting stuff. I can vividly remember when the ball dropped in NYC and it turned 2000. I was there. Something that wasn’t so glamorous and memorable however was my RSS reader this morning. It took only an hour to clear through 300 items, most of which were total bollocks. That being said, there were 3 mildly interesting videos that were passed around. Without further ado:

The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre being dunked in a glass of beer, working for a few seconds, and then dying. Some people who have way too much time and money made this. You can tell by their idiotic belly laughs. [Via: Gizmodo]

The Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N900, like the iPhone 3GS, can lock focus at a fixed point at the start of recording a video and then hold that focus for the duration of the video recording. There will be a day, some day, when autofocus can be had while recording video, but until that day comes, this is the best technology can bring us. [Via: The Nokia Blog]

An 11 minute preview of the new Samsung Giorgio Armani Windows Mobile 6.5 phone that was recently announced in Italy. What can I say, it’s a really pretty phone, I just wish it ran Android. [Via: Daily Mobile]

Almost missed this one. The Palm Pre paid apps are here now. The first of the slew is the good ol’ Air Hockey, which you can enjoy for $1.99. This actually happened few days ago, meaning that by now you should find a compelling offering in the App Catalog. It’s certainly still far from the App Store, but it’s getting there. Hopefully, the introduction of the Pre in Europe and the release of the Pixi will help the once proud Treo maker get on its feet again. We keep our fingers crossed…

GSM Palm Pre Strapped-Down and Ready to Go at O2 Germany

The good folks at PreCentral have managed to get their hands on some pretty darned good pictures of the GSM Palm Pre… from Germany. As you can see in the first pic above, the Pre is strapped-down to a dark, wood-grained display. Looks nice. I fully expect the display area to contain many bookshelves stocked with many leather-bound books… and one can only assume the O2 (NYSE: TEF) store where this was taken smells of rich mahogany.

But enough lame ‘Anchorman‘ references for now. Can I get a w00t from folks over in the UK and Germany regarding the release of the Pre? Not long now for you folks to wait! Are you excited? Or could you care less?

Palm Pre to Arrive in Spain October 14th?

Keeping with Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre news, I’ve just received some launch date information for the great folks over in Spain. Rumor has it the Pre will launch for you on October 14th. The Movistar Pre will run anywhere from free up to 219 euros, depending on plan, term, etc. You know the deal.

Throw this together with a launch in the UK on October 16th, and Germany on October 13th, and we’ve got a busy few weeks os webOS goodness on our hands! Of course, file this as rumor for now (the Spain launch) as it hasn’t been confirmed by Palm or the carrier Movistar. But I’d suspect the date is spot-on.

Exciting times for a lot of folks in Europe looking to get their hands on the Pre. Stay tuned for more.

GSM Palm Pixi Caught on Camera

Remember those new BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9700 pics I shared with you not so long ago? The same folks at Tinhte.com came through for us there, and they’re showin’ off some more love this morning too. This time around they’ve got the GSM variant of the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pixi for show.

Interestingly enough, the GSM version looks to be packing 4GB of memory (half of what we’re expecting on the CDMA version), an EDGE logo and a SIM card slot under the battery.

Hopefully with tasty leaks of the GSM version like this hitting us, we’ll see the GSM’d-out Palm Pixi on AT&T (NYSE: T) quite shortly after it launches on Sprint (NYSE: S). Me thinks that should be the case, but you never know.
