The iPhone is a data hog. Just ask AT&T (NYSE: T) and their strained 3G data network. Data-hungry iPhone users seemingly aren’t able to satisfy their thirst for online information. They’re so ravenous for the all things internet that, according to AdMob, the iPhone accounts for 50% of all smartphone web traffic around the globe. Here, in the US, the iPhone pulls down 55% of all smartphone traffic, mostly through AT&T’s 3G network. That’s a lot of data!

It’s not just the iPhone, either. The smartphone boom has raised Android awareness high enough to boost traffic from Android smartphones to 11% worldwide. In the US, the effect is even more pronounced – Android handsets are responsible for 20% of all smartphone traffic in America. Compelling new Android offerings like the Sprint HTC Hero and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) myTouch 3G (as well as their European variants) have helped drive up Android market share. Android is fast closing the gap between itself and the iPhone platform.

But, it’s not all roses and rainbows in the smartphone sector. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has long led the mobile phone market in terms of market share, but has recently been losing share to the likes of iPhone and Android smartphones. The Finns (Nokia) are responsible for 24% of worldwide traffic, with the Symbian platform sending out 25% of all worldwide smartphone web requests. The BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) OS dropped to just 7% of global smartphone requests. Windows Mobile fared even worse, claiming just 3% of global requests. Palm (NSDQ: PALM)’s webOS, despite a European launch of the Palm Pre, dropped down to 2% of the world’s smartphone traffic.

The moral to this story? Smartphones are on the rise. But, it’s not enough to just run a smartphone operating system – consumers are flocking to intuitive touchscreen platforms with desktop-class web browsers. The iPhone and Android platforms obviously meet these criteria. Nokia, BlackBerry, Palm and Microsoft should be asking themselves why their offerings don’t.

The Chinese mobile market is ever interesting. Now that all carriers have rolled out 3G, it’s time to build a differentiating portfolios. China Unicom is known to carry the iPhone, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) is betting big on their flavor of Android – OPhone, and China Telecom… well, they seem to work to get some Palm (NSDQ: PALM) and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) devices ’till the end of this year or early 2010, according to a Reuters source.

RIM already sells some of its devices in the world’s fastest growing economy, whereas Palm is a virgin when it comes to China. For them [Palm], unveiling the Pre and Pixi would certainly be beneficial and would help the once proud Treo maker get some decent numbers its shareholders desperately want. Moreover, if Palm does get in, it should establish a developer portal to spur webOS app development. There’s a plan!

Cash-strapped webOS hopefuls and deal seekers alike, take note: Amazon is offering Sprint (NYSE: S)’s Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pixi for just $25. The entry-level webOS smartphone hasn’t been on market for more than a week and we’re already seeing the handset hovering dangerously close to “free with contract” territory. As it stands, Amazon will sell you the Palm Pixi for $24.99 when you purchase it with a new 2-year wireless contract through Sprint.

Remember, though, the Palm Pixi’s entry-level price comes with compromises. The 2.6-inch capacitive touchscreen is smaller than the Palm Pre’s display. The 2-megapixel camera falls short of the Palm Pre’s 3-megapixel shooter. And, WiFi isn’t an option. Still, you get GPS, 3G data, 3.5mm headphone jack, and 8GB of onboard storage.

Black Friday is just around the corner (November 26th), so with that in mind I’m going to do my best to keep my ear to the ground for any deals. This morning I happened to come across what appears to be a list of devices to go on sale at ‘The Shack’ (er, ‘Radio Shack’ for those that prefer) on the 26th. Nothing really too crazy here, but one device that does look like a half-decent buy is the Motorola CLIQ. Having launched on T-Mobile for $199, bringing the price down to $79.99 is a great opportunity for those that may have been on the fence. One has to figure the pricing on the CLIQ will drop before the end of the year anyway… But hey, $79.99 ain’t that bad (yeah, the same 2-year contract applies).

Other Black Friday deals include the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Curve 8520 and Samsung Instinct for free (on 2-year contract), plus… Both the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre and Pixi will be up for grabs at $99.99 on the same 2-year deal.

Palm (NSDQ: PALM) has made a new firmware available for the Pre, in a move that’s obviously designed to coincide with the Pixi release. The update packs tons of minor fixes that further improve the user experience. Here’s what’s changed:

• Yahoo! synchronization is added
• Message forwarding
• A new option for restarting the phone: press and hold power > Power > Restart.
• Video clips (including YouTube) now display in widescreen mode by default.
• Embedded YouTube video on a web page can be opened with a dedicated app, just like on the iPhone.
• Ability to select a ringtone for new message alerts.
• Ability to go forward or backward in the song using a playback slider (again, just like on the iPhone).

Unfortunately this update doesn’t bring back the iTunes compatibility. Guess that needed to end at some point…

The Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pixi is due to hit market on Sunday, November 15th. Following on the slider-style Palm Pre, the Palm Pixi will launch as Sprint (NYSE: S)’s second webOS-powered smartphone. It’ll feature the same touchscreen and gesture-support we first saw on the Palm Pre, but trades screen size for a slate-style QWERTY keyboard and does away with WiFi. Big Yellow will be asking $100 for the Pixi when purchased with new 2-year contract, but savvy webOS fans like you won’t have to pay full retail. LetsTalk.com is offering the Palm Pixi (with new contract) for just $30 on pre-order. If you’re willing to put up the money on pre-order and wait for the Pixi to ship to your door, this is one hot deal.

There’s a lot competition in the smartphone space right now. Android phones abound, and the iPhone is still going strong. webOS has yet to really hit it big in the US, but at just $30, the Palm Pixi makes a strong case for picking the webOS as your next smartphone platform of choice.

The Palm Pixi features a 2.6-inch capacitive touchscreen, 2-megapixel camera, GPS, 3G data, 3.5mm headphone jack, and 8GB of onboard storage. You don’t get WiFi, but as long as you’re within reach of Sprint’s network, you’ll get 3G data speeds. It’s a tradeoff that might be worth the discounted $30 entry fee.

Back in September we managed to catch the GSM’d-out Palm Pre making an appearance on Telcel in Mexico. All we’ve had up until now was a few videos showing off the Pre on Telcel… convincing? Sorta. Official? Not at all.

Today while doing my regular morning reading, I stumbled upon more Pre/Telcel news via a statement from Dave Whalen, the Senior Vice President of Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Global Sales:

“With the introduction of Palm Pre with Telcel in Mexico, we’re expanding the Palm webOS footprint into Latin America for the first time…We’re steadily increasing momentum for Palm webOS as we continue to roll out products with new carriers and countries.”

So when will the Pre arrive in Mexico? Launch date is set for November 27th. No pricing details revealed as of yet, so stay tuned for more.

Well what do we have here? A Palm Pixi sighting… at a Walmart? Yeppers, that’s exactly what we’ve got. PalmTwit reader Tom sent this in just awhile ago, while doing some late night shopping at a Walmart in Tennesee. The picture clearly reveals the Pixi, pressed up against the display case, just trying to get out! Apparently the device was listed for $400 retail, but no other on-contract pricing was available, as the device wasn’t in their system just yet.

While Sprint is due to release the Pixi on us this Sunday ($100 on 2-year contract), don’t be surprised if places like Walmart release the thing just a bit earlier. It happens… and by the looks of things it may happen again with the Pixi.

Palm (NSDQ: PALM) seems to struggle to get developers on board. The idea would be to sell the Pre and Pixi in more countries and engage the worldwide developer base, as the current strategy doesn’t seem to work. Their App Catalog now counts 300 titles, which is very, very poor. To be fair, webOS is a brand new platform and I guess it’s fair to give Palm some space, but something needs to be done, nonetheless.

In comparison, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s AppStore now counts 100,000 apps, whereas Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s Android Market goes for 10,000. C’mon Palm, start selling your phones in India and China and organize some contest to get some hot spanking apps in the Catalog. We want you to succeed, honestly!

Why can’t they just let you have it for $99.99 out the door is beyond me. The cheapest plan that will get you this device will cost you $69.99/month; Sprint will not give you this thing without unlimited data.

The GSM Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre has been available in the UK and Germany, bringing with it Palm’s intuitive multi-tasking webOS and multi-touch display. Here in the US, though, the only Palm Pre available comes in CDMA guise and works only on Sprint (NYSE: S)’s network. Fortunately, Americans can now get their hands on an unlocked GSM Palm Pre from Expansys – as long as they’re willing to make some sacrifices.

The GSM Palm Pre will ship with some O2 (NYSE: TEF) branding and lacks the frequency support to pull down 3G wireless data from AT&T (NYSE: T)’s network (nor T-Mobile (NYSE: DT)’s network). You still get the same 3.1-inch multi-touch display, 3-megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and 8GB of onboard storage that every Sprint Palm Pre user has been enjoying for months now. But, you’ll have to deal with a “QWERTZ” keyboard that swaps the “Y” and “Z” keys like those crazy Europeans like to do.

If you can deal with non-US branding, European 3G “banding,” and a quirky keyboard setup, Expansys will be happy to sell you an unlocked GSM Palm Pre for $714.99. The website shows the unit out of stock, but should be back within a week or so.

In an effort to get some media attention prior to officially launching the Pixi, Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is offering two ways for users to win the upcoming device.

One way is to sign up on Palm’s Blog, and keep your fingers crossed you’ll be one of 25 lucky folks who will win the Pixi handset.

The other way is also a community building activity, which requires that you leave a comment on Palm’s Facebook page no later than November 14th. Here, however, you can win either the Pixi or Pre – simply write which of the two you want, and if you’re super lucky, you may get one.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) used its Twitter account @VZWOffers to announce that the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre will be hitting their network in early 2010. Talk about viral marketing and an effort to get more followers. I guess that information was retweeted and talked about on hundreds of blogs and forums around the web.

The addition of the Pre will effectively make Verizon even stronger. They will offer the Droid, Pre, Storm 2… A respectable portfolio, gotta admit.
