BlackBerry App World Down in Israel?

While doing some poking around in the BlackBerryOS forums today, I happened to notice something disappointing… especially for the good folks residing in Israel. Seems as though BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) App World is no longer available in the country. Paid apps disappeared first, and now, apparently free apps aren’t available either. Strange.

I know there is quite a BlackBerry community over in Israel, so this news just flat out sucks if you’re packin’ a BB and are looking for new apps. If any BlackBerry users in the country could comment or shed some light on this situation, it would be much appreciated.

eBay for BlackBerry Available in App World

You might have caught wind of the eBay app from the BlackBerry Developer Conference – well, it’s available now for download, allowing you to watch auctions, place bids, receive notifications of being outbid right in your Messages app, and enjoy native Calendar integration for reminders. Notifications all take advantage of the new push services, so you get notified of being outbid the second it happens, not five minutes after the auction’s wrapped up. eBay for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) works with PayPal, as you’d expect, but I wonder if there’s BlackBerry Wallet integration, too… There was talk at BBDC about the Wallet being linked to in-app purchaces. New York Times Goes Live with Free BlackBerry App

Like many (including my bud Ronen over at BerryReview), I could have sworn the New York Times already had a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) App available for download. Guess I was wrong. The app I must have been thinking about was/is for the iPhone (I have it installed on my iPhone), and it’s a pretty darn good news app. All of the Times offerings to this point have been desktop shortcuts.

If the iPhone edition is any indicator, the BlackBerry edition should be solid for anyone wanting to get their fill of the Times. Articles are downloaded to your Berry’s memory for offline viewing, which is kind of handy. Especially if you find yourself in a ‘dead zone’ with no network coverage. Content is also optimized for your BlackBerry’s screen resolution, for optimal viewing and ease of use.

Just a late night quickie here for the BlackBerry Storm 9520 users. OS 5.0.0.341 has leaked and is available right here for download. Keep in mind this is a very unofficial release, so if you do decide to download and install, do so at your own risk. Backup your device and take all necessary precautions before you proceed. Or not.

Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Supports Larger and Smaller Enterprises

Google Apps (a hosted service which manages corporate contacts, calendar, and mail) plugged in to BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Enterprise Server last spring, but it was targeted to mid-range companies. Well, App Connector has been updated to version 1.5, and with it has come better scaling both for larger and smaller enterprises. For the higher end, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has bumped up the per-server support to 500 from 250 devices, and for the smaller companies, Google Apps has embraced BlackBerry Professional Software, for rollouts of 30 and under. Just keep in mind that there were rumors awhile back that RIM was going to be ditching BPS, although Unite! was the only thing that ended up getting cancelled.

Bing Available on More BlackBerrys

Aside from being preloaded on the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Storm2 and getting rolled out on the original Storm, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s search engine, Bing, is continuing its spread on mobile. An over the air download link for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 version has bubbled up, the 8530 Curve2 is apparently preloaded with it (though I don’t see it on my unit), and a knowledgebase article is talking about new features in the 8300-, 8500- and 8800-series. If you haven’t tried it yet, Bing offers voice-enabled search, GPS-enabled local search and directions, suggested results as you type, and top news. Windows Mobile and BlackBerry seem to be getting the royal treatment right now, but it would be pretty interesting to see Bing on Android at some point. Obviously Google (NSDQ: GOOG) will be ruling the web search roost for some time still, but considering Bing’s recent partnership with Wolfram|Alpha, Microsoft will at least be able to offer an interesting alternative. BlackBerry Media Sync Updated to 3.0, Now with Two-Way Picture Sync

RIM’s desktop app for syncing up your BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM)’s media card with iTunes and Windows Media Player has just been updated to version 3.0, now allowing two-way picture syncing. That means not only will your pictures be automatically offloaded to a particular folder, but if you’ve taken some nice pictures with a real camera and want to have them on your BlackBerry, they’ll be pulled in. Of course, those pictures might be a little large for your media card, so you can opt to have them mobile-optimized. If you’re anything like me, you’ll let your mobile pictures pile up on the memory card for awhile until it strikes you to sideload the pictures onto your desktop, and then you’ve got a sizeable backlog to organize and upload; hopefully Media Sync mitigates some of that hassle into manageable chunks. Telstra Launches the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in Australia

That ain’t a knife… that’s a BlackBerry 9700! That’s exactly what Paul Hogan will say, the moment he walks into a Telstra store in Australia. At least that’s the event playing out in my head at the moment. Oh, that’d be awesome.

Why all the Crocodile Dundee nonsense? Because the Australian carrier Telstra has launched the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9700 of course! Australians can now get their hands on the latest edition of the Bold, for a whopping $999 Australian dollars. Just a tad expensive, for sure… However keep in mind that Telstra allows repayment over a period of two years.

To all of my Australian friends out there… Are you really going to pick up the new Bold for $999? Too expensive for your blood, or is this just the way things roll down under?

Pandora Radio for BlackBerry Updated to 1.1.2.1

Mobile Radio lovers with a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) on their hip will want to take note of a Pandora Radio update. A new and very incremental version has been released for BlackBerry, moving the app to version 1.1.2.1. If you’ve never used Pandora before, it’s quite the powerful radio app. Check ‘er out.

As per usual, no changelog was made available with this incremental update… But I’d have to suspect the usual bevy of tweaks and bug fixes have been addressed to help make your experience that much better.

Yesterday I told you about some rumored T-Mobile holiday deals… and wouldn’t you know it, not long after that one of the fine folks at T-Mo shot me a message to let me know the skinny for Black Friday. So, without further adieu, here is what T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) will have up for offer this Friday:

Data hogs: iPhone accounts for 50% of global smartphone traffic

The iPhone is a data hog. Just ask AT&T (NYSE: T) and their strained 3G data network. Data-hungry iPhone users seemingly aren’t able to satisfy their thirst for online information. They’re so ravenous for the all things internet that, according to AdMob, the iPhone accounts for 50% of all smartphone web traffic around the globe. Here, in the US, the iPhone pulls down 55% of all smartphone traffic, mostly through AT&T’s 3G network. That’s a lot of data!

It’s not just the iPhone, either. The smartphone boom has raised Android awareness high enough to boost traffic from Android smartphones to 11% worldwide. In the US, the effect is even more pronounced – Android handsets are responsible for 20% of all smartphone traffic in America. Compelling new Android offerings like the Sprint HTC Hero and T-Mobile myTouch 3G (as well as their European variants) have helped drive up Android market share. Android is fast closing the gap between itself and the iPhone platform.

But, it’s not all roses and rainbows in the smartphone sector. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has long led the mobile phone market in terms of market share, but has recently been losing share to the likes of iPhone and Android smartphones. The Finns (Nokia) are responsible for 24% of worldwide traffic, with the Symbian platform sending out 25% of all worldwide smartphone web requests. The BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) OS dropped to just 7% of global smartphone requests. Windows Mobile fared even worse, claiming just 3% of global requests. Palm (NSDQ: PALM)’s webOS, despite a European launch of the Palm Pre, dropped down to 2% of the world’s smartphone traffic.

The moral to this story? Smartphones are on the rise. But, it’s not enough to just run a smartphone operating system – consumers are flocking to intuitive touchscreen platforms with desktop-class web browsers. The iPhone and Android platforms obviously meet these criteria. Nokia, BlackBerry, Palm and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) should be asking themselves why their offerings don’t.

Acrobat.com Mobile App Now Available for iPhone and BlackBerry

Not sure when this popped up, but I’m thinking it was sometime over the weekend. Adobe has launched a new Acrobat.com Mobile app for the iPhone and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). Developed by the folks at scanR, the app allows you to view or fax documents from an acrobat account, plus a lot more. The official description:

The Acrobat.com mobile application by scanR® allows you to view or fax your documents from your Acrobat.com account on supported mobile devices. Or upload document images from your mobile phone and have them automatically stored as searchable PDF files in your Acrobat.com account. Note, your account includes sending two outbound faxes and up to five document uploads from your mobile phone. You can upgrade your account at anytime if you need to upload or fax more documents.

For the moment it looks like the app is available in the US, France, Germany and the UK. Hit up mobile.acrobat.com, select your country, enter your email, and punch in your mobile number. From there you’ll receive an SMS with download and installation instructions.

Palm, BlackBerry devices coming to China Telecom?

The Chinese mobile market is ever interesting. Now that all carriers have rolled out 3G, it’s time to build a differentiating portfolios. China Unicom is known to carry the iPhone, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) is betting big on their flavor of Android – OPhone, and China Telecom… well, they seem to work to get some Palm (NSDQ: PALM) and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) devices ’till the end of this year or early 2010, according to a Reuters source.

RIM already sells some of its devices in the world’s fastest growing economy, whereas Palm is a virgin when it comes to China. For them [Palm], unveiling the Pre and Pixi would certainly be beneficial and would help the once proud Treo maker get some decent numbers its shareholders desperately want. Moreover, if Palm does get in, it should establish a developer portal to spur webOS app development. There’s a plan!

BlackBerry Curve 8520 Dummy Units Arriving at AT&T Stores

Last we heard the AT&T BlackBerry Curve 8520 was hitting stores ‘in the coming weeks‘ for $99.99 after rebates (and of course, with that shiny new contract). Well, to add some more fuel to the fire it looks like 8520 dummy units are showing up at AT&T (NYSE: T) stores. Set the countdown timer, because we could see the 8520 go live on AT&T this week or next.

While the Curve 8520 is no flagship device, it is a huge improvement from the original Curve, and features a 2MP camera, 320×240 display, trackpad, and rubber-covered side keys for a touch of awesome.

BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) theme lovers, I’ve been meaning to post on this for a few days now… Not sure how I overlooked it, but here it is for ya, finally.

Elecite has launched yet another new Premium BlackBerry Theme. Called ‘Sentient’, the theme is for OS 4.6 and up devices only… which means it will be compatible with the Curve 89xx series, Bold 9000 series, Storm 95xx series, Tour 96xx series and Bold 97xx series. Groovy.
