Samsung Moment, Sanyo SCP-3810 now available at Sprint

Existing and potential Sprint (NYSE: S) customers, this one’s for you. The CDMA/WiMAX carrier has started selling two new devices – Samsung Moment and Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) SCP-3810.

The first of the two we’ve already covered before – it’s an Android-powered, full QWERTY keyboard-equipped smartphone that prides itself with a 3.2-inch HVGA AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, and 800MHz CPU. Sprint is asking $179.99 for the Moment, with a contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

As for the other device, Sanyo SCP-3810, it’s a low-end clamshell with specs that include 2.4-inch QVGA screen, 1.3-megapixel camera, GPS, Bluetooth, web browser. The price is $0, with a contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate. The phone is available in two colors – Regal Red and Black Onyx.

Sanyo’s cheap texter spotted twice before is now ready for primetime. While Sprint (NYSE: S) doesn’t necessarily have a looker on their hands, they do have something cheap for people who’s primary need is a full QWERTY keypad. Here are the main specs:

Sanyo’s SCP-2700 Rears Ugly Head Once More, Now in Pink

Wow, as if this thing needed to be an even bigger uggo. Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY)’s SCP-2700 has made another appearance, bearing Sprint (NYSE: S) branding and hideous lovely pink floral design, alongside the quilted blue we spotted earlier. The only thing we really know spec-wise is a 1.3 megapixel camera, but don’t expect this one to be on the high end. On the plus side, the SCP-2700 will only be costing $39.99 on contract, so it’s got that much going for it. Like any sketchy bar pick-up, I doubt this one will get any prettier once it’s in focus, but hey, you never know. Let’s open up nominations for its commercial name… Maybe a monicker in honour of the bereaved self-immolating bargain texter: “QuickTrash”.

Sanyo SCP-2700 Headed to Sprint?

An awfully generic looking QWERTY keyboard-packing Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) handset is on the way to Sprint (NYSE: S), bearing model number SCP-2700. A 1.3 megapixel camera and quaint quilted pattern grace the backside, but few details otherwise. A couple of other Sanyo SKUs have bubbled up, including a new Pro 900 to follow up on its ruggedized brothers. The SCP-2700 isn’t especially impressive-looking, but yet, at least it’ll probably be cheap.

Panasonic’s Sanyo Acquisition Set to Cost $9 Billion

Talks between Panasonic (NYSE: PC) and Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) initiated last month regarding an acquisition have come to a boil and a price of $9 billion ($1.47 per share) has been set. We might not see many Panasonic handsets this side of the pond, they’re big in Japan, having hit the 100 million sales mark earlier this year. Sanyo’s are a little more popular here, with a few rugged flips popping up recently, but still far from a big name in mobile. Rough economic waters are making acquisitions viable and necessary courses for many companies, including two recently gobbled up by RIM, for example. As much as Panasonic has to gain from Sanyo’s foothold in the North American mobile market, the biggest gains will be in renewable energy.

“The synergies are there in the long run,” [Kazumasa Kubota, analyst with Okasan Securities Co.] said. “The solar business is a definite positive for Panasonic, and it can also hope to gain all the patents Sanyo has in rechargeable batteries.” … “Given the rapidly changing environment, we came to the conclusion to sell our stake for the benefit of all Sanyo stake holders,” Goldman Sachs spokeswoman Hiroko Matsumoto said.

Sanyo PRO 200 and 700 Coming to Bell in January

A few more entry level phones have been announced for the post-holiday season. This time around it’s for the Canucks in the crowd, and they’re coming from Bell.

The Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) PRO 200 and 700 are due to hit Bell on January 12th next year. Both devices feature bluetooth, speakerphone, 3G and 10- capability. If you’re looking for a basic phone that can take a bit of a beating, the Sanyo PRO 700 meets military grade specs (810F). Drop it, kick it, try and freeze it… and the device should be A-OK.

The Sanyo PRO 200 will be availble for $149.95 on a 3-year term. $199.95 for the 2-year and $349.95 to own it contract-free.

The Sanyo PRO 700 will be available for $199.95 on a 3-year term, $249.95 for the 2-year and $399.95 for the contract-free dealy-o.

Panasonic to acquire Sanyo

Panasonic (NYSE: PC) has apparently reached to a preliminary agreement to buy Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Electric Co. and presidents of the two companies will hold a press conference on November 7th to announce details of the acquisition.

The world’s largest maker of consumer electronics plans to keep the Sanyo brand, most of its employees, and make the company a subsidiary by around April next year. To accomplish this task, they will buy Sanyo’s preferred shares from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Daiwa Securities SMBC Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

The deal would create a mega-corporation with revenues over ¥11.2 trillion, which is around $110 billion.

The world is in the economic crisis and smart companies with tons of cash are in the buying spree. I would expect to see more similar deals taking place in the near future. Stay tuned…

Bell and Solo Mobile Q4 lineup leaked

Lots of new devices coming Bell’s way in time for the holiday season, most notably the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Storm landing on November 21st. We’ve already heard about the Cleo, complete with crystal-clad Bluetooth headset, but the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro will also be coming in early November and December respectively. The LG Voyager will be shipping mid-November, with a 350-song library preloaded on the 2 GB memory card. Pretty juicy, and talk about a Motorola (NYSE: MOT)-made Android phone is equally appetizing. Guess us Canadians are just going to skip over the G1, eh?

Regardless of the touchscreen revolution that’s sweeping across the globe, there is most definitely a healthy bunch of wireless users that aren’t looking for too much more than basic cellphone calling features in their stylish clamshell of candybar handset. To that end, Sprint (NYSE: S) is gearing up to offer their users the entry- to mid-range Sanyo Katana Eclipse successor to the successful Sanyo Katana lineup of flip-phones.

Last we saw, the Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Katana Eclipse had passed the FCC hurdle with flying colors, and now the un-ugly handset is getting all glammed up to attract a worthy suitor – namely, Sprint. What you see here is the Sanyo Katana Eclipse looking as good as it’ll ever get (the morning after should be a doozy).

Engadget Mobile managed to get their hands on the first press-shots of this sleek clamshell for Sprint, but details on the feature set are otherwise lacking. Sanyo Katana Eclipse passes through FCC on way to Sprint

Sprint’s entry-level clamshell stable is going to be adding a new handset to the lineup. With numerous Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Katana variants already picked up by the No. 3 US wireless carrier, we’re not surprised to see this latest Sanyo Katana Eclipse headed to Sprint (NYSE: S).

The FCC has just unveiled the newest slim flip-phone from Sanyo. The Sanyo Katana Eclipse features a modest spec-sheet listing a 2 megapixel camera, EVDO, GPS with Sprint Navigation, Bluetooth, microSD card slot, Sprint TV, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Other than that, details are slim.
Of course, pricing and availability aren’t yet known. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about Sprint’s upcoming Sanyo Katana Eclipse.

Sprint’s delayed nationwide push-to-talk (PTT) system, dubbed QChat, went live on Sunday, June 15. With Sprint (NYSE: S)’s Nextel arm still reigning king as the benchmark of push-to-talk providers, Sprint has expanded the service to its CDMA subscribers.

QChat is now available coast-to-coast in over 40 markets in the US. Sprint subscribers in cities like Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Orlando can now choose from one of four new handsets that are compatible with QChat.

Sprint is offering QChat hopefuls a choice of an LG LX400 – with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and GPS for $79.99; a rugged Samsung Z400 – with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Sprint Navigation, Bluetooth, and touch design for $99.99; a Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) PRO-700 – with Sprint Navigation, Bluetooth, and rugged exterior for $79.99; or a Sanyo PRO-200 – with Sprint Navigation and Bluetooth for $49.99. Sprint (NYSE: S) announced two new Nextel Direct Connect devices – the Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Pro-200 and the Sanyo Pro-700. Powered by Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM)’s QCHat technology, these arguably nice looking clamshells feature Direct Connect, Group Connect, call alerts, single number option, DC permissions, Sprint Mobile Sync, EV-DO Rev. A support, mobile mail and Bluetooth.

Both devices will hit select Sprint sprint store later this month. The Sanyo Pro-200 will retail for $49.99, while more rugged Pro-700 model could be yours for $69.99. That’s with a two-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate, of course… Full release is available after the jump.

So this is what the Sanyo Katana LX looks like

Trying to get an idea for a handset’s design from a couple measly FCC diagrams is like trying to guess where that distracted soccer mom on her cellphone will drive that huge SUV of hers. You can have a good idea of what’s it’s going to look like, but you’re probably going to be thrown for a loop.

With the Sanyo Katana LX, the FCC diagrams gave us a vague idea of what the successor to the Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) Katana would look like. But, we couldn’t figure where Sanyo stuffed that darn external display. It certainly wasn’t going to fit in that little black window that’s shown in the diagrams.

Well, Engadget Mobile put their eyes on the Katana LX in the flesh. We can see that the external display is tucked under the outer shell. It’s cleverly hidden under a semi-reflective, see-through cover. It’s definitely a good look for any handset, and we’re glad to see that the Sanyo Katana LX will be sporting just this sort of external display.

And, as a final touch of flair, the Sanyo Katana LX is finished in a shiny, reflective coating – which ties in nicely with the external display. Look for the Katana LX to drop in a month or so on Sprint (NYSE: S)’s network.

FCC unveils Sanyo Katana LX

Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY)’s done with the mobile phone game, but their name will live on with Sanyo-branded devices like the successor to the slim and cheap Sanyo Katana II. The FCC has unveiled the Sanyo Katana LX today, just in time for a launch next month (April).

The FCC diagrams showcase a device that’s pretty much what we expected. The Sanyo Katana LX is slim, it’s a clamshell, and it’s, well, a bit on the boring side. Don’t expect any EVDO on this slim successor to the Katana II, but keep an eye out for at least a camera and external display. Details are slim, but we’ll know more in a month or so.

Sanyo and Kyocera seal the deal – Sanyo selling mobile phone unit to Kyocera

It’s been a long time in the making and we’re glad to hear that long-rumored Sanyo buy-out candidate Kyocera has finally sealed the deal with Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY). As you may recall, Sanyo’s mobile phone unit has struggled to turn a profit, and so put their cellphone-manufacturing arm on the auction block. Kyocera (NYSE: KYO) is said to be putting up $378 – $472 million to take Sanyo’s mobile phone manufacturing unit of its hands – making the the world’s 6th largest mobile phone maker.

Now, the deal is expected by some to help boost Kyocera’s market share and presence on the global market. Still, there are analysts that don’t see any benefit in a deal between two low-key market players. Japan’s mobile phone industry is incredibly fragmented (there are no fewer than 10 cellphone manufacturers in the island-nation), and has failed to gain a foothold in the face of larger global players like Nokia, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and Samsung.

Kyocera is liking blowing their $378 – $472 million wad to gain that 6th place ranking, and not much more. Good luck with that whole market-share nonsense.

Bell Mobility in Canada is adding two new devices to its offering – LG Shine clamshell and Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY) S1. The first one is probably among the coolest lookin’ clamshell devices on the market today and packs such features as 2 MP camera, stereo Bluetooth, music player and the microSD memory slot. On the other hand, the Sanyo S1 is an entry level device for people who just need to text and call. It lacks camera and the Bluetooth support is limited to mono sound.

The LG Shine clamshell is available for CA$129.95 with a 3-year term or CA$379.95 without any contract. On the other hand, you can get the Sanyo S1 for just CA$19.95 with a 3-year term or buy it for CA$149.99 without committing to any contracts.
