Earlier this week we saw Samsung announce their plans to update select Android devices in their existing product portfolio to Android Ice Cream Sandwich by the end of Q1 2012, most notably the Samsung Galaxy S II. Now it’s Sony Ericsson’s turn, and we’re sad to report that they’re moving at a much slower pace. Sony Ericsson, soon to be just plain ol’ Sony, is going to release a device in 2012 that’s currently codenamed LT28at. Sony Ericsson releases alpha Android Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs for Xperia phones

Sony Ericsson’s developer community has come up with an alpha ROM of Ice Cream Sandwich for unlocked versions of Xperia devices, including the Arc S, Neo V, and Ray. What should be noted is that alpha ROMs aren’t made for daily use because there are functions that aren’t working correctly. Here is a list of the things that aren’t working, as provided by Sony Ericsson in the company’s official blog post: Google Mobile Services (GMS) apps are not included (for example, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.). Sony Ericsson Nypon may be a smaller Arc HD

We’ve been seeing a lot of the Sony Ericsson Arc HD, code-named Nozomi, but it may have a smaller, nearly-identical brother called the Nypon. The only telling difference between the above picture and those we had seen earlier is the placement of the front-facing camera; otherwise, it has the same stark, blocky design, and single silver band for navigation keys. While the Nozomi has a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 touchscreen, the Nypon LT22i here will only be 4 inches and 960 x 540 resolution – which by any everyday consumer’s Read more

2011 in Review: Android

It’s been a big year for the Android operating system and it has grown in many ways. We’ve seen two new versions of the OS, insane growth across the board, and no signs of slowing down. Here are a few highlights of Android this year. Activations/Marketshare Comscore’s latest numbers for Android in the US pegged the OS with a 44.8% total marketshare for the month of September and we can only imagine that phones like the Galaxy Nexus, Droid RAZR, and HTC Rezound will only strengthen these numbers going forward. Sony Ericsson Arc HD (Nozomi) gets caught on camera

Sony Ericsson isn’t the most praised Android manufacturer, but to their credit they do make some pretty stylish devices. Some folks got their hands on photos of the company’s upcoming Sony Ericsson flagship and specs to go with them. In the picture above is a handset dubbed as the Arc HD (Nozomi), or more technically known as the Sony Ericsson LT26i. We actually wrote about leaked photos of the Arc HD a few weeks ago. This device is rumored to carry some decent specs: Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread 4.3-inch LCD display of HD Read more

Sony Ericsson explains Ice Cream Sandwich update – Be patient

Surprisingly close to when Motorola did it, Sony Ericsson laid out the process for updating its phones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Basically, it’s going to take a while for Android 4.0 to land on Sony Ericsson’s phones but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working hard on it. The company had previously said that 2011 Xperia devices like the Arc will definitely get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. It is very transparent about the process of getting this software on its devices, as this involves taking the open source Read more
