Today on the Sony Blog, the company announced that the Xperia Tablet Z would be getting the AOSP treatment.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z, alongside the Xperia Z, now has access to a fully stock Android experience that should surely be enticing for those who love the hardware of the Tablet Z but favor vanilla Android. The build for the tablet is now available in GitHub, but the experience may not be as fluid as you’d want it to be right now. The build isn’t intended for daily use, and Sony is encouraging developers to join in.

Even if the Sony Xperia Tablet Z never gets a fully functional and stable build of vanilla Android 4.2.2, it’s the thought that counts. We only wish other handset makers would offer up such an option for developers.

Be sure to check out the video below and see AOSP on the Xperia Tablet Z in action!

Unfortunately, we’ve no idea whether this phone will ever hit the Western hemisphere. Sony’s other phone, Xperia Z, could certainly use the specs boost to compete with high-end models from HTC and Samsung. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear something new on this…

Big news for Playstation 3 racing fans, Gran Turismo 6 has been officially announced for the holiday season! About a month ago, a pre-order was caught on Newegg but Sony and Developer Polyphony Digital have remained mum up until today. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi dropped the news at the United Kingdom’s Silverstone circuit (one of the tracks featured in the new title).

The new game will feature improved graphics using a new, flexible rendering engine that features “adaptive tessellation”. As usual Polyphony is aiming for the ultimate in realistic auto handling, so they’re also developing a new physics and suspension engine with Yokohama and KW Automotive. The total amount of cars available in Gran Turismo 6 will be near 1200, 100 more than Gran Turismo 5′s final garage . According to Gamespot, “Gran Turismo 6 will focus on more customisable vehicles than in previous games, and Polyphony Digital is aiming at an extensive post-launch DLC plan to extend the life of the game.”

According to IGN, Yamauchi hinted at an eventual PS4 version saying, “We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on PS3 for now. I thought the best scenario would be to have the game come out, then to have new scenarios, new DLC and other updates. Once the players have thoroughly played out the system, if the PlayStation 4 version came out naturally, as part of that process, I think that would be the best scenario.” Unfortunately he wouldn’t go into any details about when the next-gen version would release.

If the visuals of the “concept movie” released on the Gran Turismo Youtube page today are any indicator, this game is going to look great. Savvy developers are getting surprising results out of the aging PS3, so who knows! For now we’ll have to wait and see.

In any case, we’ve no idea whether this particular Sony smartphone will ever make it to the West. If that happens — and it did get the regulatory approval to be sold in the U.S. — we’ll get back to you with more details. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?

Sony’s new Xperia ZR handset is now official. It’s being marketed as a high-end smartphone with equally high-end water-resistent capabilities. Sony says it’ll allow you to “Experience filming underwater in Full HD.” It’s IP55 and IP58 compliant, which in addition to being waterproof means it’s also dustproof as well.

Jumping into the main specs of the phone, the Xperia ZR features a 4.55-inch 720p HD OptiContrast display. The camera is a 13MP shooter with an Exmor RS sensor and 16x digital zoom. The device houses a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 2,300mAh battery, which all contribute to powering the device’s OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It also comes with 8GB of internal storage with a microSD expansion slot.

The phone weighs 138 grams, or just under 5 ounces. It’s a compelling choice for people who need a rugged phone, and those who prefer not having to sacrifice good looks in favor of durability. It does look like a pretty good Android phone, and Sony does always make solid hardware. It’ll come in four colors: black, white, pink, and mint (which is like a teal.)

The Xperia ZR should launch by the end of June in select markets, and may sell under a different name such as the “Xperia A” in certain markets. Sony has yet to reveal pricing.

To make for an even better news, other Sony smartphones were also caught at the PTCRB, including the Xperia SL and Xperia acro S. The latter is a Japan-only device, though.

Needless to say, we’ll keep our eyes wide open and let you know as soon as we have something new to add to the story. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?

As if we needed any other proof that Sony is prepping a handful of new devices for the 2nd half of the year, we finally have a glimpse at the Xperia A (Dogo) to confirm at least one of the upcoming devices.

The handset falls in line with the existing Xperia Z’s design language, featuring the large, centralized power/lock button. From the photos, you’ll also see that the device isn’t nearly as svelte as the Xperia Z. You won’t find a glass back on the Xperia A, but you will have a removable battery cover instead, in case you’d like to replace the 2300 mAh battery.

Other specifications of the Xperia A include a 5 inch 1080p HD display, 13 megapixel camera, 2.2 megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB internal storage, micro SD card slot, 2GB RAM and LTE support. While there’s no mention of what processor is running the show, we’d expect it to at least match the Xperia Z’s Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, if not getting the bump to the Snapdragon 600.

With NTT DoCoMo set to unveil new Sony devices on the 15th, the Xperia A will more than likely get its official debut then. We’d imagine that there’s little chance to see this device come to this side of the pond, but the Xperia Z and ZL are more than adequate enough to ease the pain.

This is definitely the Sony we like to see. Pumping out great devices that people will surely like, and the Xperia A is just one of many potential device that will be unveiled before the end of the year.

In other words, the CX190 will find its place just below the Xperia L. We guess it will cost around 200 EUR sans any strings attached while most carriers will offer it for free to anyone willing to sign a two-year contract. We’ll get back to you with more information as soon as we get them…

The Sony Xperia Z tablet just passed through FCC’s approval process and should now be on its way to T-Mobile.

Usually in hardware that has cellular connectivity, many devices that are compatible with the carrier are also compatible with AT&T due to the similar band requirements. The Xperia Z tablet, however, just includes Band 4 which makes it pretty much exclusive to T-Mobile. Unless Sony makes a separate version with different network bands, once the Xperia Z makes its debut we’ll likely see it on T-Mo. The only task left is to wait for an announcement.

The Xperia Z tablet has a 10.1-inch 1920×1200 resolution BRAVIA display, an 8.1MP rear camera, a 1.5GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 4G LTE for T-Mobile’s new LTE network, and a slim 6.99mm profile. The tablet is waterproof and dust-proof as well for added durability. On paper, it sounds like this could be a pretty good device. Plus, don’t forget since it’s presumably tied with T-Mobile, you’d be paying according to T-Mobile’s revamped contract-free plans.

While the tablet could appeal to Sony fans, it might still be a tough sell in the still-trying Android tablet market. It’s not the last we’ll be hearing about the Xperia Z so stay tuned.
