Setting aside Mobile phones that have HD recording (Samsung Omnia HD anyone?) for a moment, Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) has just announced two devices that are pretty mobile – they call them Pocket camcorders.
Camcording has seen some price compression in recent times with the Flip range being announced, but Tosh have gone one better and aimed for full 1080p-capable cameras! That elicits a tech-phwoaaar!!!!
To be fair, they are entry-level devices, but they do have some impressive features such as:
H.264 encoding
5MP CMOS sensor
4x digital zoom
2.5 inch LCD
32GB expandable storage
image stabiliser
night mode
HDMI output
YouTube upload
I don’t know about you, but for £100-130 (for the Pro P10 and Pro S10 respectively) that sounds like a damn good deal! If I can get my grubby little mitts on one I will give it a review soon (hint hint Toshiba!)
According to some documents from Global Certification Forum (GCF), Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) may have one more powerful phone in the pipeline. The organization has recently received approvals for two Toshiba handsets: the already known “TG01” and one device GCF calls “To Be Advised.”
As we look at the specs of the two phones (image bellow), we see that both the “TG01″ and “To Be Advised” models are identical. The difference is in the GCF number: TG01 has the GCF number 1706, while the other device has number 1715.
Nothing is certain at this stage, but maybe just maybe, we’re talking here about the mysterious Toshiba device that recently passed the FCC hurdle. On the other hand, the Japanese company may introduce a brand new device with TG01-like specs, which (and now I’m going way into speculation) runs Android — Toshiba is a member of the Open Handset Alliance, after all. Waiting and seeing is all we can do at this stage…
Check what I’ve found on Vimeo – cool videos exploring UIs of 4 cool devices. Among the demos you’re about to see are such popular devices as Gigabyte g-Smart S1200, Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) TG01, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) Idou and LG KM900 Arena. First comes the g-Smart S1200, while the rest is following after the jump. Enjoy!
The “how’s” and “why’s” of this latest leak aren’t exactly clear, but it seems that Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) might be working on a Windows Mobile flip-phone running on the Qualcommchipset Snapdragon mobile that makes the Toshiba TG01 such an incredible device.
Toshiba’s apparent FCC filing for the Toshiba TG01 is at once incredibly confusing and irresistibly intriguing. Toshiba has apparently filed for FCC approval of the upcoming Toshiba TG01, which isn’t anything out of the norm – handset manufacturers, as a matter of course, have to ask for the FCC’s blessing before selling their wares in The States. But, what caught our eye was the hardware description offered in the FCC documentation.
In the filing, Toshiba proceeds to describe the TG01 – filed with the FCC as the Toshiba TM5-E01 – as a Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset with a secondary display. Now, for those of you not quite up to speed on Toshiba’s upcoming WinMo smartphone, the Toshiba TG01 is a slate-based mobile phone with a 4.1-inch touchscreen display. As such, there’s no secondary display on the TG01. Flip-phones, on the other hand, do have secondary displays. Moreover, the FCC documentation describes the hardware a having a 3-inch touchscreen, not the TG01’s 4.1-inch media-monster.
A quick glance at the FCC pics proves that Toshiba is pushing the TG01 through the FCC’s testing labs. The only question is, why did Toshiba incorrectly list the TG01’s specification?
Did Toshiba cut corners with their FCC docs and hack together the hardware description from some other Windows Mobile flip-phone’s FCC papers? If so, what is this mysterious WinMo flipper, does it rock Snapdragon silicon and when is it coming out?
O2 (NYSE: TEF) Germany is all proud to announce that they will be the first mobile operator to carry Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF)’s uber-cool, super-powerful TG01 Windows Mobile smartphone. The Snapdragon CPU-powered handset will hit O2’s offering in Germany “from summer this year,” meaning there are still few months to wait for this super thin beauty. Price wasn’t announced, but I doubt you’ll be able to grab the single most powerful smartphone for free on a contract. Quite the contrary, even with some decent contract I would expect it to go for few hundred Euros, though it’s pure speculation at this stage.
Once again let’s recap the TG01’s specs: aside from sporting Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM)’s 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, there’s also HSPA support on board, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4.1-inch WVGA (480×800 pixels) touchscreen, 256MB of RAM coupled with 512MB of ROM, as well as a microSD memory card slot…
If Android and iPhone (at least in theory) can have it, so can Windows Mobile-powered Toshiba TG01. Future users of the ultra-thin, super-powerful smartphone will be able to enjoy full-fledged navigation, compliments of CoPilot Live, on that shiny 4.1-inch WVGA screen. Among the features included in the mix are turn-by-turn navigation, 2D and 3D map views, real-time services such as traffic alerts, fuel prices, weather conditions and safety camera alerts.
Sounds promising and if I were at Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF), I would definitely consider bundling CoPilot or some other powerful GPS navigation software with the device to increase the value in the ever demanding high-end smartphone user. Plus, I guess it’s fair to make the TG01 burst with apps to show all the power of the Snapdragon.
Let’s take a look at Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF)’s booth at the Mobile World Congress in beautiful Barcelona, Spain. Toshiba’s presence was understated, to be sure. The electronics maker wasn’t showcasing much in the way of mobile phones, just a single Windows Mobile smartphone – the Toshiba TG01. But, as the first mobile phone to take advantage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile chipset, the TG01 is powerful and sleek enough to carry Toshiba’s product portfolio on its shoulders.
The Toshiba TG01’s feature-set includes the expected GPS, WiFi, 3G data connectivity and microSD card slot that we’ve come to expect from high-end smartphones. But, with the 1Ghz ARM-based CPU and 600Mhz DSP chip packed into a 9.9mm thin package, the Toshiba TG01 shines as a multimedia powerhouse the likes of which would put the iPhone 3G to shame. And, the 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen (resistive (pressure-sensitive)) display makes for an impressive user experience.
Take a virtual walk through Toshiba’s Mobile World Congress booth:
Nimbuzz scored a big deal with Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) and their popular Nimbuzz Social Messaging application will come pre-installed on highly anticipated, Snapdragon-powered TG01 Windows Mobile smartphone.
The idea, of course, is to provide future TG01 users with great multi-network IM experience, and in that sense we love it. Now that I’m thinking, pre-installing multi-network IM clients should be something every handset maker should do. Simply put – it adds value, providing better out-of-the-box experience for the end users.
If you want to know more about Nimbuzz, their website is a place to go.
If you’re anything like us, you’ve been dying to see the Toshiba TG01 in real-world action ever since Tosh announced the Snapdragon-powered smartphone earlier this month. With an unbelievably fast 1Ghz processor and all kinds of multimedia processing hardware packed into its Snapdragon silicon, the Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) TG01 is easily one of the baddest smartphone to be announced in recent memory. The 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, 3G data connectivity, and microSD card slot sound good on paper, but they really don’t do the handset justice.
So, to help give you an idea for just how slim, beautiful, and powerful the Toshiba TG01 really is, we decided to put Toshiba’s booth reps to work in helping to demonstrate this uber-smartphone’s strengths. The Toshiba TG01 isn’t just slim and sexy, its build quality is light-years beyond Toshiba’s previous smartphone offerings. Edges are rounded and the clean, minimalist design underscores the TG01’s elegant and practical industrial design. There’s just something about a dense and solid feeling device that really makes for a positive user experience, and the TG01 redefines what it means to be a “sexy” smartphone – notice the iPhone 3G looking a little insecure next to the not-as-homely TG01.
The Toshiba UI overlay shines as a finger-friendly alternative to the TG01’s Windows Mobile 6.1 underpinnings. Every smartphone manufacturer worth their salt these days are pushing their own Windows Mobile overlays in an effort to push the staid WinMo platform’s touchscreen appeal, and the Toshiba UI gets the job done well. It’s no TouchFLO 3D, but Toshiba clearly spent a good amount of time developing the Toshiba UI.
As a multimedia platform, the Toshiba TG01’s Snapdragon chipset outperforms just about every other smartphone on market. From smooth-as-butter high-res video playback to 3D gaming, the TG01 delivers, and then some. The integrated GPS navigation software ensures that you’ll never be left struggling to find your way around town.
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS ran the show on the TG01 demo models, but we’re hoping (as did the Tosh reps) to see the Toshiba TG01 launching in the second half of 2009 with Windows Mobile 6.5 installed. And, seeing as how Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has confirmed that Windows Mobile 6.5 won’t be made available as an update to existing WinMo6.1 users, we’re crossing just about every finger we can manage to cross…
Enjoy the Toshiba TG01 hands-on video and gallery!
The Samsung Ultra Touch was the last of three new handsets announced by Samsung today (the Blue Earth got an honourable mention). The S8300 is a classy little number with a slide-out keypad, full AMOLED WQVGA screen that clocks in at 2.8″ and 240 x 400 pixels. It’s packing an 8 meagpixel camera (like just about every other new phone these days, it seems), with auto-focus, face detection and geotagging through its integrated GPS unit. The TouchWiz UI wasn’t anything new, and based on the slide of the Blue Earth handset, we’re presuming it will run the same. Other specs of the Samsung Ultra Touch include:
