Opera responds to Chrome for Android

Google just released the Chrome for Android beta this morning for Ice Cream Sandwich devices and you just knew other browser makers would have something to say about it. Mobile browser powerhouse Opera has chimed in and it appears to playing nice but emphasizes the fact that its products will use less data than Google’s new browser. “It’s only natural that Google launched Chrome for Android. Consumers want a better browsing experience on Android. That is what Opera has offered with both Opera Mobile and Opera Mini,” Mahi de Silva, Read more

LightSquared accuses government of rigging GPS results

LightSquared is fighting for the life of its network after a recent report suggests its satellite-based LTE network will interfere with GPS devices. The company countered this report with accusations that the testing was not only flawed, but rigged to fail. The scathing accusations were made Wednesday at a press conference. LightSquared claims the Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Executive Committee (PNT EXCOM) and GPS industry insiders manipulated the research to produce negative results. The company says the GPS companies conducted the tests in secrecy and used NDA agreements to hide the Read more

CES 2012: AT&T talks about LTE and Cloud Computing solutions

AT&T used its Developers Summit at CES to lay out the advantages of its LTE network and how that’ll help developers. In a comment directed at Verizon, the carrier points out it’s the only one with 4G speeds on both its HSPA+ and LTE networks. AT&T rolled out HSPA+ in 2010 as a stopgap measure while it rolls out its 4G. This configuration gives the iPhone 4S three times faster download speeds than other carrier networks (like Verizon Wireless which runs on EV-DO). The carrier is working on its network and made 150,000 Read more

Vimeo to release mobile apps for Kindle Fire, Android and Windows Phone

Online video website Vimeo is making the jump to mobile with a new application that’ll let you upload, watch and share videos using your mobile phone. It’s a combination of improved camera sensors and 4G LTE connectivity that makes this step a timely one for the video website. Mobile phones now account for about 15 percent of Vimeo’s site traffic, says Joe Schmitt, Vimeo’s lead mobile developer. The company doesn’t go into the details about the phones visiting its site, but an increasing number may be 4G phones. LTE handsets can deliver downloads as fast as 20 Mbps, and more people will be using this fast data connection to both upload and stream video Read more

Skyfire: companies need to do a better job streaming mobile video

Mobile video is about to explode in the upcoming year. According to Cisco, video accounts for 52 percent of all mobile data and will rise to 66 percent by 2013. With video conferencing, YouTube and Netflix, this figure isn’t surprising. What is surprising is that companies are doing remarkably little to help wireless carriers balance this consumption. Without some balance, this increase in data threatens to choke our mobile broadband connection in the upcoming years. Carriers are trying to control consumption with metered data plans that restrict usage to 2 GB per month, but according to a recent Skyfire report, there’s another way. Companies can use Read more

6.05 million American homes depend on wireless operators for their broadband access

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to test out DNA Finland’s 4G LTE network before it was launched to the public. In short, I absolutely fell in love with the kind of speeds I was seeing. With just a bar or two of signal in my home office (read: the kitchen table) I was pulling 40 megabits down consistently. That got me thinking, why do companies bother digging up roads to install fiber or fresh copper wires when they could just give people a Read more
