Magna Carta Holy Grail will be available for download through an Android app, which will be available on June 24th for owners of a Samsung Galaxy S 3, Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy Note 2, with the album becoming available for download on July 4th. The album will be free of cost for the first 1 million people who download it through the Android app.

“The Sun-Times business is changing rapidly and our audiences are consistently seeking more video content with their news. We have made great progress in meeting this demand and are focused on bolstering our reporting capabilities with video and other multimedia elements. The Chicago Sun-Times continues to evolve with our digitally savvy customers, and as a result, we have had to restructure the way we manage multimedia, including photography, across the network.”

According to a tweet from Robert Feder, a former media reporter for the Sun-Times of 28 years, Sun-Times reporters “begin mandatory training today on ‘iPhone photography basics’ following elimination of the paper’s entire photo staff.”

This move highlights a huge shift in the way traditional media is being replaced by so-called new media, which focuses on shorter news stories and more multimedia elements. Not only is it difficult to snap quality photographs while reporting on a story, many photographers who were laid off had long-standing relationships in the community, which allowed them to gain access to areas and situations in which they could capture interesting photographs and intimate information.

“The photographers they fired were not button-pushers, they were journalists and trusted members of their communities. Some of them were deeply connected to areas of Chicago in ways that a freshly minted multimedia journalism graduate from New York will never be. Everyone in the city, it seemed to me, knew John White and Brian Jackson. I couldn’t walk up to a crime scene or a neighborhood center without them receiving slaps on the back and having doors thrown open. Time will tell how this move works out for the Chicago Sun-Tribune, and if and when other news media outlets follow suit.

Spotify has picked up some substantial investment from companies such as Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs, but is still having a hard time turning a profit. Spotify does not own its content, but rather pays record labels for access to their songs. This model is increasingly hard to manage for Spotify, as prices for access to songs climb as Spotify’s popularity rises. A variety of other music streaming services are bidding for the same access, thusly allowing the record labels to charge whatever they see fit.

Netflix has faced similar problems, with movie studios charging high prices for content, leaving Netflix with a small profit margin. Netflix decided to make original content in an attempt to woo more users and increase profits, releasing its original series House Of Cards last year. Whether the original content model will pay off however, remains to be seen. Production costs of original series are expensive to produce, but Netflix and now Spotify are investing now for the hope of more subscribers in the future.

This announcement highlights changes of the entertainment industry, as smaller studios are able to create content on par with traditional Hollywood studios.

Since this app centers around music sharing, users must first identify a song with the app, either Shazam style via the microphone, or by playing a song on the device. After the song is identified, users can then add a picture and location data, as well as quotes and hashtags. All of these things are rolled into one sleek-looking post, with the Album art at the center. Users can then click on the album art to instantly play the song. Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare sharing are also integrated. Users can like and comment on each others activity, as well checking out what’s trending nearby and other users who have liked the song as well.

Some other features include the ability to listen to shared music via YouTube directly in the Soundtracking app, and a home and lock screen widget. The app has built-in support for Spotify and Rdio as well, and the ability to un-like tracks and posts.

Soundtracking is hands down one of the best social networking/streaming music apps I have ever used.The only problem right now, though, is that not many of my friends are using it yet. But with an expansive feature set and smooth interface, I doubt it will be long before we can dedicate songs to our friends with a finger press.
