BlackBerry working on a Padfone-like device?

First of all, this isn’t rumor nor I have any inside information – it’s just me speculating and reading between the lines. Here’s how I came to this conclusion: 1. BlackBerry CEO Thosten Heins’ words First he predicted the demise of tablets and then said they should be easier to use. While these two comments may sound contradicting they don’t need to be – if we’re talking about a device like the ASUS Padfone, everything makes sense. Perhaps he just hinted us what BlackBerry is working on? 2. BlackBerry ports Read more

BlackBerry users not happy about ported Android apps

Android apps that have been simply ported to BlackBerry 10 are proving unpopular with users, BlackBerry’s head of developer relations, Alec Saunders said. He went on to add: “From a commercial perspective, users hate them. Our partners who have ported apps get dinged for them.” BlackBerry allowed developers to easily port over existing Android apps to BlackBerry 10 in order to boost the app count. It is estimated that around 20% of the BlackBerry World is now made up of these kinds of apps. The problem is that these apps Read more

BlackBerry’s Canadian market share grows to 13.5%

Canadians obviously want BlackBerry to succeed and have flocked in numbers to support the company’s new BlackBerry 10 devices, including the Z10 and Q10. According to latest figures from the research firm Raymond James, BlackBerry is steadily gaining its Canadian market share back. From its sunk market share of 6%, it managed to grow to 13.5% of the Canadian market. As you would expect, Apple and Samsung are ruling the market, accounting for 40.1% (down from 44% in Q4 2012) and 31% (also down from 35% in Q2 2012), respectively. Read more

120,000 BlackBerry 10 apps now available in BlackBerry World

BlackBerry World app store now counts 120,000 BlackBerry 10 apps that work on the company’s Z10 and Q10 smartphones (as well as the upcoming Q5). The new platform was launched with 70,000 apps “on board” with another 50,000 submitted in the next four months. BlackBerry president and CEO Thorsten Heins didn’t hide its excitement, praising the “thriving ecosystem” and a great response from the developer community. He was also quick to add that synthesizer maker Moog has selected BlackBerry 10 as the second after iOS to offer its app. To Read more

BlackBerry CEO suddenly thinks tablets should be easier to use

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins made some odd comments about tablets today at the BlackBerry Live conference. They’re odd because just last month he seemingly would have disagreed with what he is now saying. “The industry got stuck on the term ‘tablets’,” Heins told CNET, before adding a stance for the company. “We want to create something that’s easier to use.” His plan is to make the tablet essentially a paper weight unless it’s paired with a mobile phone — in this case, a BlackBerry — to act as a brain. BlackBerry R10 leaks again

The upcoming BlackBerry R10, which we’ve already seen before, has been leaked again. This time we see it in red and black, the first of which may prove popular among women and fashionistas who like to carry unique devices. Details are still scarce about this model but we tend to think the R10 is a budget version of the Q10 that will likely replace the earlier Curve series. It is said, the phone will keep the Q10′s 720×720 pixels screen while boasting a glossy body. With the R10, BlackBerry will Read more

BlackBerry 10 devices and Samsung Knox get DoD’s seal of approval

BlackBerry 10 and Samsung Knox devices are secure enough to be used by the military, Department of Defense has announced. And while we’re not surprised about BlackBerry, we are delighted to see Samsung on the list, as well. This means that Android is getting to places where it wasn’t before, namely government agencies which are known to demand extra layer of security. Of course, this doesn’t mean “pure” Android smartphones are good to go. Rather, a special software like Samsung Knox is required to crypt and protect key information. Sammy’s Read more

BlackBerry CEO: Q10 sales reaching “several tens of million of units”

We’ve already told you that BlackBerry Q10 is in high demand in the UK, and now we have the Canadian company’s CEO sharing another tidbit of the good news with its shareholders. We expect several tens of million of units.” That, of course, is still Read more

A new video prank by ImprovEverywhere hits on one of the most annoying and dangerous developments associated with the rise of the smartphone; clueless looking pedestrians staring at their devices as they navigate city streets. Sure, it can be annoying trying to dodge seemingly clueless people, but we are all guilty of this behavior. And this would be a great service if it were a reality. The prank pokes fun at this behavior, depicting fake New York City municipal workers employed as “Seeing Eye People” who guide clueless smartphone distracted Read more
