Another BlackBerry phone coming later in the year, or early 2015

The newly announced though still not publicly shown BlackBerry Q20 aka BlackBerry Classic may not be the only device the Canadian company will launch to users all around the world. The Z3, as far as we’ve understood, is at the moment limited to Indonesia, though some surrounding markets may get it as well. One can never be sure. In an interview with CNet, BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen said that while the Q20 will be catered towards old BlackBerry fans, another model will be released to win over new customers. We Read more

Mobile payments coming to BBM!

BlackBerry is investing some serious resources into its instant messaging client. Just when we saw it getting optimized for secure communication in the enterprise environment (BBM Protected), we’re hearing about some new plans involving mobile payments. That’s right, the Canadian company is apparently exploring an option to allow BBM users to beam money to one another like it’s an image or file. This capability will primarily target users in the developing world where many banking customers don’t have access to in-person or online payment resources. In that sense, mobile payment-enabled Read more

This is how BlackBerry Q20 could look like… or not

A few days ago BlackBerry announced two new phones, the Z3 for Indonesia, and QWERTY keyboard-equipped Q20. Thus far we’ve only seen the former while the latter will be unveiled later in the year. That, however, doesn’t stop designers from coming up with their own mockups. And what you can see on the image above doesn’t come from BlackBerry but one designer who shared its work through BBM Channels. We kinda like how this Q20 concept looks like. However, we doubt the end product will look like this. First of Read more

BBM Protected is mobile messaging service for regulated industries

It’s hard to compete with WhatsApp in consumer messaging market, but BlackBerry should be able to easily beat it in the enterprise space. To that end, the company unveiled BBM Protected — the first solution offered in the new eBBM Suite — to bring secure and reliable real-time mobile messaging to regulated industries. The service will offer unrivalled level of trust in enterprise messaging with end-to-end encryption of messages that uses symmetric encryption keys for BBM messages and best-in-class technology for public-private signing and encryption key pairs. Employees will be Read more

BlackBerry Z3, Q20 unveiled in Barcelona alongside BES 12

BlackBerry unveiled a pair of new smartphones at Mobile World Congress. The first of the two, Z3 (aka Jakarta), is the result of BlackBerry’s co-operation with Foxconn. This unit has a z10-like all-touchscreen form factor and is heading to Indonesia, where interested users will be able to buy it starting from April for some $200. The Z3 lacks LTE connectivity support though that could be changed in some updated model released later in the year. It has a 5-inch screen while running BlackBerry 10.2.1 out of box. The other phone Read more

BBM for Windows Phone coming this summer

BlackBerry announced that BBM for Windows Phone will be available this summer. The IM client will be preloaded with Nokia X Android-smartphone, whereas Lumia owners will have to wait for another couple of months. “BBM continues to grow in popularity as millions of people use our mobile platform for chatting and connecting with friends or colleagues, and we are very excited that we will soon welcome Windows Phone and Nokia X users to the BBM community,” said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Solutions at BlackBerry. The press release goes on Read more

BBM beta gets stickers

BlackBerry decided to join the stickers craze and include the functionality in the latest update to its BBM app. This is something all other popular messaging platforms have, and I guess the idea is to “keep up with the Joneses.” It could be that the Canadian company is looking to make BBM the real stand-alone product everyone — not just BlackBerry owners — will want to use. Now that WhatsApp has been acquired by Facebook for gazillion dollars, perhaps BlackBerry thinks BBM could be their next cash cow. Alas, BBM Read more

BBM 2.0 for Android, iOS updated with Channels and Voice support

BlackBerry has released an updated version of its BBM messaging app for iOS and Android. Version 2.0 brings two major changes – support for Voice communication and BBM Channels. The first feature allows BBM users to talk to one another for free, and will work either over 3G or Wi-Fi. As for the BBM Channels, it’s made to enable users to engage in conversation with like minded folks on topics of common interest. In addition, the application comes with Glympse-like location sharing that can be enabled for a pre-defined period Read more

64-bit BlackBerry device coming next year

Presuming BlackBerry manages to convince enough users to buy their phones and stays in business for another year, it will join the 64-bit craze with a device of its own. According to N4BB, the Canadian company has been planning to utilize Qualcomm’s potent Snapdragon MSM8994 chip that comes with 8 cores and 64-bit architecture. Of course, this chip is still in the pipeline and as far as we know, it won’t be out before at least the second half of 2014. In the meantime, we hope to see something more Read more

BlackBerry “Ontario” caught at Geekbench benchmarks

Popular processor benchmark app Geekbench has been recently updated and someone at BlackBerry decided to try it out with a still unannounced “Ontario” smartphone. That device has been mentioned/rumored in the past and as far as we (don’t) know, it could be launched later this year. Perhaps even during the forthcoming Mobile World Congress at the end of this month. Anyhow, the Geekbench test result has been caught in the wild, revealing parts of Ontario’s guts. The image you can see above suggests this phone will pack Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon Read more
