Cellspin brings mobile blogging to Palm OS! Audio, video, pictures, and text posting with ease

Palm Centro CellspinThe ability to blog on-the-go is at once a blessing and a curse. Mobile blogging (or, moblogging, as it were) opens up so much in the way of productivity, but it also puts a kibosh on all “away from the computer” excuses.  Double-edged swords like this are commonplace in the mobile space.

With the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Centro just announced in unlocked form for US customers, it seems appropriate that the Palm OS gets some moblogging support. The latest dagger from Cellspin brings their mobile blogging platform to Palm OS. As you may already know, Cellspin allows the user to upload audio, video, pictures, and text simultaneously to MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Blogger, YouTube, Picasa, Flickr, Live Journal, Live Spaces and eBay. And, with Cellspin’s commitment to support more blogging platforms and social networks, Palm OS users can expect to upload their latest media to their favorite blog or social network with ease.

With Palm OS officially supported, Cellspin has the gamut of mobile operating systems covered – Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), and now Palm OS. We can only hope to see an iPhone OS and Android application in the pipeline soon.

By Will Park on Monday, June 16th, 2008 at 1:44 PM PST
In Announcements, Devices, Palm, Palm OS, Rogers

Palm Centro Cobalt BluePalm’s little bottom-line booster is going to be making its debut in Canada – on Rogers (NYSE: RCI)’ wireless network. With the Cobalt Blue-colored Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Centro having just been launched on Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless, Rogers has just taken the wraps off its own version of the popular, lightweight smartphone from Palm

Rogers is slated to launch the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone 3G next month, but that doesn’t mean Canada’s largest GSM network hasn’t forgotten its Palm-faithful. Loyal Rogers subscribers can sign a new three-year contract on a minimum $45/month wireless plan in return for a shiny new Palm Centro for $199. New customers can expect a $299 price-tag on the same 3-year contract.

Of course, $199 will also get you an iPhone 3G…

TouchLauncher makes your Palm OS device feel like an iPhone

By Dusan Belic on Friday, June 13th, 2008 at 3:19 AM PST
In Applications, Palm OS

TouchLauncherTouchLauncher is a new Palm (NSDQ: PALM) OS launcher app that will make your Treo or Centro (or even older Palm PDAs) look and feel more like an iPhone. Not only you can start application in the “iPhone manner,” but you can also scroll with your finger between multiple screens and get number of unread text messages appeared as a part of the SMS icon.

In addition TouchLauncher supports iconsets and wallpapers, rearrangement of applications in a drag-and-drop fashion, categorization and renaming of applications, addition of web and contact links, and more.

If you own a Palm OS based device and like the way Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s handset works, you’ll certainly want to consider paying $6.99 for TouchLauncher. Or at least, you may want to try out the free trial version that supports launching of 10 first apps.

Finally, if you want to see how this works in real life, check out the video demonstration for some step-by-step goodness after the jump.

Facebook goes native on Palm OS

By Dusan Belic on Friday, June 13th, 2008 at 2:24 AM PST
In Applications, Palm OS

Facebook on Palm CentroIf BlackBerry and iPhone users can have it, so can Palm (NSDQ: PALM) OS based smartphone owners. I’m talking about the Facebook application, the one that allows you to poke and chat with your buddies while pretending to work. ;)

Facebook is now fully optimized for Palm OS. The native application allows users to:

  • Send and receive Facebook messages, and respond to friend requests.
  • View and post photos, right from a smartphone, or snap and send off new ones.
  • Same goes for video – you can upload clips directly from your handset.
  • Receive News Feeds, change your status, and get friends’ status updates on the go.
  • Browse and search profiles, post messages to friends’ walls, and send friend requests.
  • Open your Contacts and dial your friends with just one touch.

The application can be freely downloaded at go.palm.com/facebook or over the air at mobile.palm.com/facebook.

Alltel’s Treo 755p gets ROM update

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, June 12th, 2008 at 5:34 AM PST
In Alltel, Devices, Palm, Palm OS

Alltel Treo 755pPalm (NSDQ: PALM) has quietly released a new ROM update for the Treo 755p users on the Alltel network. We’re not sure what exactly is included with the new, version 1.03 of the firmware, but it seems like a stability-issue-fixing update.

Palm only said: “This software update is for a phone reset issue that occurs under certain specific and rare conditions.”

As you’re probably already aware, prior to updating you should perform a Hotsync to save your data. Palm advises that users allow up to 45 minutes for the operation.

StyleTap’s Palm OS emulator goes beyond experimental prototype; Officially coming to iPhone, iPod Touch

StyleTap Palm OS emulator for iPhone

While we’re still waiting for the next-gen version of the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) OS (Nova), you may want to use some of the older Palm OS apps on other, non-Palm OS powered devices. Thanks to StyleTap’s Palm OS emulators you can do that on various platforms. Back in February, we saw they’re thinking about porting their work to iPhone/iPod Touch, but at that point they said the application is still in the “experimental prototype” phase without being clear whether they’ll actually release it to the general public, at all.

Lucky for us, their demo video has been viewed over 800,000 times prompting StyleTap’s CEO Gregory Sokoloff to comment, “…And the response to our video has convinced us that many, many consumers, and companies, will eagerly jump at the change to buy iPhone devices if they can continue to run their must-have applications.”

See they’re suddenly serious about this “thing.” Now we only have to wait for early July, when further information about the product, including how it will be marketed and sold, will be made available.

Palm CEO Ed Colligan talks up Linux-based Palm OS 2.0 – Nova

By Will Park on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 5:28 PM PST
In Announcements, Palm, Palm OS

If you ask us, we’re done listening to Palm (NSDQ: PALM) just talking about their Palm OS 2.0. We want to see the Linux-based revamp to the so-old-it’s-senile Palm OS before Palm’s mobile platform fades from our radar.

In an effort to keep us all interested in Palm’sPalm CEO Ed Coligan talks about Palm OS 2.0 overhauled mobile OS, the company’s CEO, Ed Colligan, talked up what he calls “Palm 2.0.” The new mobile platform is codenamed  “Nova,” and will be built on Linux, but Colligan refrained from referring to it as Palm OS 2.0. “I’m not coming up with the branding right now – whether it’s Palm OS 2.0 or Next Generation, we’re not coming up with the branding right now.” Who cares what you call it, just get it out in the open already.

Palm is apparently concentrating on endowing their new Palm OS “next-generation operating system with much more capabilities, driven around the Internet and Web-based applications.” Palm wants to launch their own OS because they want another stab at developing an integrated OS solution that we saw with the Palm OS’s initial release.

But, that’s not all. Colligan believes that their failed Foleo platform will be “vindicated someday,” hinting that the Foleo could be more in hibernation than six feet underground.

Now, the prospect of a fully integrated mobile platform that focuses on web-based application and web surfing really has our hopes up for the new Palm OS, Pam 2.0, next-generation, whatever it’s going to be called. Come on Palm, launch it before it’s too late. Palm Treo 900 powered by Nova? Bring it on.

TreoSpot – free location-based reminder app for Palm Centro

By Dusan Belic on Monday, May 19th, 2008 at 2:21 AM PST
In Applications, Palm OS

TreoSpotHere’s a neat freeware for Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Centro owners. TreoSpot uses cellular towers to determine your location and allows you to set reminders based on your present location. First you define the towers and then create reminders when you enter certain area. This is very neat for such events when you need to do something once you get on a previously defined place. For instance “Do the laundry” could appear in TreoSpot when you approach cellular towers near home. ;)

On the downside, though, TreoSpot needs to be installed in the internal memory for proper functioning. Then again, it’s not actually a downside, but consumes Centro’s limited internal memory rather than a memory card… More information and download instructions are available from the official website.

Palm Centro hitting Colombia via Comcel and Movistar

Palm Centro hitting Colombia via Comcel and Movistar

A million units sold is not good enough for Palm (NSDQ: PALM). They want and need more in order to get out of the mess they’re in at the moment.

After Mexico, the once famous Treo maker is going further south to Colombia. There, they’ve found not one but two carrier partners to offer their flagship smartphone – Comcel and Movistar. Hopefully, they’ll repeat their success from the U.S. in Columbia and slowly start growing, again.
