Olympic Games are always a great way to spread your marketing message to a wide audience. Bell and Samsung know that, hence we have Bell’s Omnia II being unveiled as the official mobile phone of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The announcement came just in time to celebrate the carrier’s newly rolled out HSPA network and should certainly help Bell get some love (and new subscribers) from around the country.

You know all about the Omnia II, so I won’t repeat its specs here. I’ll only add that those who own Samsung’s Windows Mobile smartphone will be able to download Samsung’s Wireless Olympic Works (WOW) application, which is used to keep track of the latest news and happenings during the Olympics. Cool for both Bell and Samsung!

Coupled with telus (NYSE: TU) launching their own tomorrow, Rogers (NYSE: RCI) will no longer have a lockdown on hot GSM handsets like the iPhone, and Canadians will get some much-needed choice in service providers. The only devices Bell was forthcoming about before today’s announcement were an HSPA+ internet stick, and MiFi mobile hotspot, but they have really opened up both barrels with their full HSPA family. Earlier today, you might have heard about the Bell BlackBerry Bold 9700, but there’s also the original Bold 9000 for $249.95 on contract, the LG Xenon (simple, full-QWERTY slider; $89.95 on contract), the Nokia 2730 (standard candybar; $29.95 on contract), the Samsung omnia II (touchscreen slate running Windows Mobile with TouchWiz 2.0; $199.95 on contract), Samsung Impact (A.K.A Highlight, touchscreen slate with voice and motion-controlled UI; $79.95 on contract), and of course, the beloved iPhone 3GS.

On top of devices, Bell is also announcing a new HSPA video calling service available on the omnia II and Xenon that not only works with other capable phones, but also through a Facebook app. Overall, this is a huge step for Bell and Canadian wireless overall, and it’s not over yet – we’ll be hearing more about telus‘ HSPA grand opening tomorrow. For a closer look at Bell’s full lineup, check their online store, or their HSPA landing page for more info on the new network.

Something so powerful and ‘game changing’ that you may never look at a Windows Mobile app the same way again. What am I talking about? The first ‘fart’ app has been spotted in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Yeeeeeehaaaaaaw!

Of course, I’m being a bit ‘cheeky’ here, but I found it hilarious to note that the new ‘MyFart’ app has made an appearance for all the WinMo users feeling a touch of ‘flatulence fail’. There’s no telling if this will open the flood gates on a whole new generation of ‘fart’ apps for WinMo, but I certainly hope not. I think we have enough of those types of apps in the App Store, thank you very much.

Description of the ‘MyFart’ app for WinMo:

MyFart is a fun little application that makes funny fart sounds. Choose from 12 different funny fart sounds and prank your friends!! Use MyFart to create endless nights of laughs!!

Oh the ‘endless nights of laughs’. I can’t wait!

HTC’s latest Windows Mobile phone isn’t going to appeal to everyone, but for fans of Windows Mobile 6.5, the HD2 is as good as it gets. And, it looks like the HD2 will launch with some cool features. New screenshots show the HD2 getting down with multi-touch, compass mode, MP3 editing, WiFi router (routing?), car-kit mode and video playback at 1.7Mbps!

The HD2’s capacitive touchscreen makes multi-touch possible, and we’re glad to see pinch/stretch zooming in Acrobat PDF reader. HTC has also loaded a ringtone maker onto the handset, allowing the user to edit their favorite MP3 into a ringtone. And, there’s a “WiFi Router” mode that allows you to share the HD2’s 3G data connection with WiFi-enabled devices around you.

As for video playback at 1.7Mbps, it’ll go a long way to give help the HD2 realize its full potential as a multimedia monster. High-quality video usually hints at hardware video-acceleration, so that’s another plus. Unfortunately, we’ll be stuck watching said video on the ancient-looking Windows Media Player.

HTC is touting the HD2 as “the first Windows phone with HTC Sense”, although that really just amounts to an update in TouchFlo 3D. Still, it’s good news that things are getting official with HTC’s WinMo behemoth; packing a 1 Ghz Snapdragon, a 4.3″ WVGA touch display, Wi-Fi, GPS, and of course Windows Mobile 6.5. The November 4 date lines up nicely with previous rumours that Europe would see the HD2 on the 11th., but the U.S. probably won’t get it until early 2010 – let’s keep our fingers crossed for confirmation in the next few days. To get up close and personal with the HD2, take a look at our hands-on video from CTIA.

Well, consider yourself officially put on notice. The HD2 you see in this here video shows the gorgeously slim, yet incredibly well endowed, getting all multi-touchy with pinch-and-stretch zooming on its 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen!

The multi-touch feature seems to be slightly laggy in the video. It’s not clear if the lag issues will be fixed as HTC puts its finishing touches on the HD2 prior to launch. Still, even with buggy multi-touch, the HD2 is high on our wishlist. We had a chance to put hands on the HD2 earlier this month, and we can say that the HD2 is worth putting up with Windows Mobile 6.5 and a slightly quirky multi-touch browsing feature. With a little luck, we’ll see the HTC HD2 going live on T-Mobile USA shortly after its November 11 launch in Europe.

Some people even believed that a Zune phone was in the works at Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT). Today, all the rumors are put in place, as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed to Engadget that Zune integration is coming to the next release of Windows Mobile.

With Zune features in tow, Windows Phones can finally level the playing field with the iPhone and its AppStore. Of course, time will tell if Windows Mobile has what it takes, from a user experience perspective, to take the iPhone blow-for-blow.

It’s not clear whether we’ll see Zune features in Windows Mobile 6.5.1 or in Windows Mobile 7 proper. We’ve already seen hints of Zune integration coming to WM7, but there’s the possibility that WM6.5.1 will be blessed with the new feature. Either way, it’s exciting to hear the confirmation come from Ballmer.

Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s Xperia X2 has been cleared by the FCC. Unfortunately for those in the U.S. who look forward to grab one, this is not the U.S.-centric device.
Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s Xperia X2 has been cleared by the FCC. Unfortunately for those in the U.S. who look forward to grab one, this is not the U.S.-centric device. It lacks a 3G radio that sings on either AT&T (NYSE: T)’s or T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA’s 3G network. So we’re wondering why the Swedish-Japanese handset maker went through the hassle of approving the device which no one will buy. Maybe they’re counting on Europeans/Asians visiting America. Though there are quite a few people doing so, it’s not the market to count on.

Anyway, I assume the “ready for U.S. soil” version will also find its way to the FCC in no time, when hopefully, a carrier partner will also be announced…

A new promotional video from the Windows Mobile team has a couple engineers demonstrating handful of apps that Microsoft rejected from the Windows Marketplace. The video is funny because it’s not too hard to imagine some of the fake apps actually making onto the AppStore. There’s never any mention of the iPhone or the AppStore, but it’s clear what Microsoft is implying here.

Now, Microsoft might be thinking they got Apple good with this ad. But, we’re not so sure. The Microsoft clan is pretty fond of poking fun of Apple, but we think it usually works to Apple’s advantage. Case in point, every post related to this Windows Mobile ad is more than likely going to make mention of the iPhone, Apple and/or the AppStore. Some will probably even mention how the AppStore has gazillions of apps and the iPhone is super popular. That’s all publicity for apple and the iPhone.

Rather than poking fun at the competition, Ballmer and Co. might do better focusing on bringing their wares up to speed. Windows Mobile 6.5 is starting to look like it was released before it was fully polished and Windows Mobile 7 is about a year off (which is like “forever” in the mobile world). All the while, the iPhone, Android and webOS are picking up steam.

But, that’s not to say the video spoof isn’t totally on point or hilarious. Give it a look!

Turns out, Windows Mobile 6.5 may not have even been ready to go live. The screenshots you see here from a purported Windows Mobile 6.5.1 update suggest that Microsoft is still scrambling to bring their mobile operating system up to speed with competitors. The update boasts changes to button design, button layout and button size that should make Windows Mobile 6.5 more user friendly.

The screenshots show the “Start” button has moved from the top row of the screen (the task bar) to the bottom of the screen. The task bar is now dedicated to displaying tasks, notifications and settings – all accessible with a tap of the finger.

For those of you paying attention, the new button layout meshes nicely with the new Internet Explorer Mobile’s interface (which we briefly show in this hands-on video), which lines the bottom of the display with navigation buttons. The buttons also get a refresh with a more modern look and a bump in size for easier finger input.

Is Microsoft looking to bring the Windows Mobile 6.5 UI more in line with their Windows Mobile 7 design philosophy in order to make the transition to WM7 as smooth as possible? Or does Microsoft really have no idea what they’re doing and hoping to somehow pull a miraculously enjoyable Windows Mobile 7 out of the proverbial air?

Whatever the case, Windows Mobile 6.5 shouldn’t have launched until it was really ready to launch.

Take a look at Windows Mobile 6.5’s more finger-friendly interface and it’s clear that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is working to fix what’s wrong with their mobile operating system. Windows Mobile 7, whenever it finally launches, should be Microsoft’s formal response to the likes of the iPhone OS, Android OS and webOS. So, what’s it going to look like? Going on newly leaked design mockups, Windows Mobile 7 looks light years beyond the tiny buttons and awkward menus we’ve come to associate with Windows Mobile.

What you see here are Windows Mobile 7 design ideas compared to the traditional “WinMo look.” Notice the large buttons, sliders, toggles and more palatable layout. The “Start” button also seems to have taken a leave of absence. We’re not sure how much of the design concepts shown here will actually make it to the final version of WM7, but if this is an indication of Microsoft’s design direction, there might be hope yet for Microsoft’s tired mobile OS.

We told you about Acer’s renaming scheme and it’s happening now. The computer maker turned smartphone manufacturer has officially unveiled its Windows Mobile 6.5 lineup, consisting of two series of devices – beTouch and neoTouch.

beTouch are more affordable handsets and at the moment there are three models in the series – E100, E101 and E200. On the other end, neoTouch only has a single “member” at the moment and it’s the Snapdragon-powered S200 aka F1.

Detailed specs were not unveiled, and the same goes for exact prices. We do, however, know these babies will sell from £159 to £295 ($259 to $481) at retail, unlocked. If some carrier jumps in, expect the pricing to go further down. And yes, we’ll be watching for carrier partner announcements, have no doubts about it…

If you’re a media junkie, the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack might turn you off, but for the heavy messengers who need a big keyboard and a lot of options for apps, the Tilt2 will likely do the trick.

But, if a new tip from one of PhoneArena’s readers pans out, we’ll be seeing the Omnia II going live in less than a month! The Omnia II boasts an eye-popping 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, 5-megapixel camera (auto-focus and dual-LED flash), GPS, WiFi and hefty on-board memory stores, so you can see why we’re excited.

We recently spied the Omnia II, at CTIA Fall 2009 conference, wearing a Verizon (NYSE: VZ) logo, so there’s no doubt Big Red will soon offer the Omnia successor. Black Friday (the Friday following Thanksgiving) was a good bet for the Omnia II’s launch, but now we’re hearing that Verizon Wireless could very well go live with the Omnia II on November 1st.

The Omnia II will launch with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional installed, but can soon thereafter be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5 as a free update from Samsung. Of course, Samsung’s TouchWIZ UI is a big part of the Omnia II experience, which is going to suck or be awesome for you, depending on how much you like the widget-based UI. We’re not too big on Windows Mobile, and even less on TouchWIZ, but the Omnia II’s feature-set might be enough to distract us from the awkward UI.

Amazon is now offering the just-launched AT&T PURE for just a penny, when purchased with a new 2-year contract through AT&T. Leave it to Amazon to undercut AT&T on a spanking brand-new Windows Phone.

What can you expect for your penny? Expect to get a 3.2-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, 3G data, Bluetooth, 5-megapixel (autofocus) camera and microSD card slot with your penny’s worth of PURE. Of course, with Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional already installed, the new PURE is noticeably more usable and responsive than the Touch Diamond2 with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional installed. The WM6.5 update makes a significant difference.

Find the 1¢ HTC PURE here. Remember, you’re going to have to sign your life away for a couple year of AT&T-servitude to get the price. Or, as msmobiles puts it, “24 months of misery.”
