In Applications, Windows Mobile
VITO Technology tries really hard to make Windows Mobile users love their devices. Earlier we saw them releasing the iWindowsMobile Communication Suit — the application pack that ultimately makes Windows Mobile smartphone look and feel like an iPhone — and now, they’re out with Winterface.
In case you own HTC Touch Diamond or Samsung i900 Omnia, I wouldn’t suggest installing the new UI on top of what you got. However, if you’re not that lucky to have any of the two phones mentioned, you may want to seriously consider Winterface. The new VITO’s app bundles a launcher, a task manager, and a multitude of Today plug-ins. In addition, it allows you to have as many screens as you want and put icons on apps, settings and contacts. And, as we’ve kinda expected, flipping through screens is done by sliding finger gestures…
I’ll stop here. You should definitely consider Winterface. More information is can be found at VITO Technology’s website from where you can also purchase the app for $19.95. A free 14-day trial is also available.

In Devices, HP, Windows Mobile
If you’ve been waiting for a Windows Mobile smartphone which has the Treo-like form factor with full QWERTY keyboard, you’ll be glad to know the HP iPAQ 910 is now available for purchase.
The HP device has everything you could possibly need — including HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and GPS on board. 128 MB of RAM is there to make sure multi-tasking works as it should, and the Marvell PXA270 CPU running at 416 MHz provides all the processing power needed…
As a Symbian fan I would always go for the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71, instead. However, I’m also sure there are quite a few Windows Mobile fans out there who may prefer HP’s smartphone.
The HP iPAQ 910 costs $499.99 and you can grab it on HP’s website.

In Devices, FCC, HTC, Sprint, Verizon, Windows Mobile
We love a good FCC-blessing every now and again. It’s always nice to know that the good folks in some non-descript government laboratory are working hard to make sure that the newest and coolest gadgets with radio transmitters don’t fry our brains in to oblivion. And, to make sure CDMA users don’t get zapped into half-wits, the FCC has just cleared the HTC Touch Diamond for CDMA-duty.
Following on the Sprint (NYSE: S) HTC Touch Diamond spy pics and HTC’s push to get the FCC’s go-ahead on the CDMA variants of their HTC Touch Pro and HTC Touch Dual, we’re seeing the CDMA-toting HTC Touch Diamond getting the green-light from FCC engineers. With Telus (NYSE: TU) having already announced the CDMA HTC Touch Diamond for the Canadian market, it’s just a matter of time before Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Sprint pick up HTC’s hottest ticket.
Now, we wait…

In Asus, Devices, Rumors, Windows Mobile

Speculation, being what it is, forces us to take both possible sides of a story in to account. Such as this latest rumor regarding the Lamborghini-branded Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone from ASUS. The ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini has been gussied up and shown off for the lux-handset demographic to drool over for the past several months, and we’ve been waiting on ASUS to finally launch the handset this summer. But, that may no longer be the case.
We hearing that ASUS has put the kibosh on the ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini’s 2008 summer launch plans. ASUS apparently wanted to ensure that their more important product launches stayed on-schedule for a Q4 2008 launch window.
Now, as far as the other side of the story is concerned, we could just be seeing the ASUS ZX1 getting delayed until 2009. Like the rumor says, ASUS is putting a priority on their other Q4-targeted handsets – which could mean the ZX1 is getting bumped back, not entirely killed off.
With Lamborghini styling and a slick UI under the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered hood, the ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini is definitely a smartphone worthy of seeing the light of day. For what it’s worth, we hope to see this device someday.

In Devices, HTC, Rumors, Sprint, Windows Mobile
Following on the CDMA HTC Touch Dual’s appearance on the FCC’s website, as the HTC NEON400, we’re hearing that Sprint (NYSE: S) is lined up to offer the HTC Touch Dual on September 2nd.
A leaked Sprint document shows that the No. 3 US wireless carrier is going to offer an “HTC 6950″ during the first week of September. Given that the HTC Touch was originally listed as the HTC 6900 of Sprint’s inventory list, this new HTC 6950 could very well be the HTC Touch Dual in CDMA guise. Of course, take all this at face value – especially considering that the July 27th launch date listed on this leaked document for the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Treo 800w has been revised for July 13th.
But, even if the HTC 6950 doesn’t turn out to be the HTC Touch Dual, Sprint’s got a busy summer schedule ahead of them. We’re seeing a Blue variant of the LG Rumor, the Palm Treo 800w, the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) RAZR/Vegas VE20, various data card refreshes, Sanyo (OTCPK: SANYY)’s Katana Eclipse, Samsung’s M220 and M320, Motorola Renegade V950, and Motorola i365 all slated for release in the coming months.
Granted, most of Sprint’s upcoming lineup, save for the Palm Treo 800w and HTC 6950, aren’t exactly high-end handsets, but there’s something to be said for putting the customer’s at the top of the priority-list – which is Sprint’s new tack on their wireless business.

In Announcements, Apple, BlackBerry, Palm, Palm OS, RIM (Research in Motion), Research, Windows Mobile, iPhone, iPhone OS
The iPhone 3G will be launching at 8am local time on July 11. And, as soon as sales go live, the US is going to see a tremendous shift in the smartphone market. According to a new survey from ChangeWave Research, consumers are looking more toward the iPhone 3G than either the RIM-made BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) lineup or any smartphone offerings from Palm (NSDQ: PALM). So much so, in fact, that the iPhone 3G could have a “tsunami-like” impact on the US smartphone market.
While the iPhone 3G currently ranks as the third most popular smartphone in the US with 11% market share, compared to RIM’s 42% and Palm’s 14% share, ChangeWave suggests that the iPhone could skyrocket to at least second place with the iPhone 3G.

Surveying 3,567 consumers following Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s June 9th iPhone 3G announcement, ChangeWave found that 56% of consumers planning to purchase a smartphone in the next 90 days are looking to fill their needs with Apple’s next-generation iPhone 3G. Of the respondents, 23% plan to get a RIM-made BlackBerry handset, while only 3% of smartphone enthusiasts have a Palm device in mind.
The BlackBerry Bold will likely hold up RIM’s side of the smartphone market, while the Palm Treo 800w will be giving Palm-fans a does of new hardware. But, with the iPhone 3G-fighting BlackBerry Thunder reportedly delayed until the end of 2008 due to developmental struggles, how will RIM fare against Apple in the US?
If these figures project reliably in to real-world consumer intentions, we’ll be seeing twice as many new iPhone 3G handsets hit the market over the next few months than we will any BlackBerry handset.

Note: the chart focuses on those respondents indicating interest in smartphones

In Applications, HTC, Windows Mobile

One of the HTC’s TouchFLO 3D user interface downsides (which is found on the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro) is lack of, let’s say, serious customization. You can tweak only few things, and sing along HTC’s design ideas. Don’t get me wrong – I love the TouchFLO 3D, however why they left out additional customization is beyond me. Maybe they’ve wanted to follow Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s example? Who knows…
Anyway, thanks to the free utility called Diamond TF3D Config you can completely rearrange the TouchFLO 3D tabs. Instead of the default “Home, People, Messages, Mail and Internet” order, you can make it it differently and for instance put “Programs” or “Weather” on the first screen. Additionally, if you’re using some other third-party media player, you may want to hide some of the tabs (i.e. videos and music) from the home screen. Choice is yours and choice is good!
Finally, Diamond TF3D Config also allows you to change the date appearance on top of the Home screen and at the moment includes German and English presets, only.
The application is available as a free download from the German PPC-Welt Community and before installing, it is recommended that you backup your device.

In Announcements, Services, Windows Mobile
With mobile email, especially of the “push” variety, gaining traction as the communication medium of choice for hurried businessmen and consumers alike, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has announced that they too will be offering push email service through its hosted Exchange program.
For as little as $3 a month, Microsoft has announced that it will provide hosted Exchange service with an Exchange mailbox and Sharepoint access. The full-blown hosted Exchange service costs $15 per month and offers full Exchange and Sharepoint support as well as access to the full-suite of collaboration tools.
No word on whether the service will be aimed at both the consumer and enterprise levels or just business-suited execs. We’re hoping that Microsoft will be offering the hosted Exchange service for anyone willing to pay the monthly fee.
