Sprint’s Touch Diamond coming on August 28th?

By Dusan Belic on Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 at 6:21 AM PST

Sprint’s Touch Diamond

We’ve already reported Sprint will be launching the HTC Touch Diamond. As a matter of fact, we told you the struggling CDMA carrier will be offering the device in quite attractive red color. And now it seems we have the exact release data — “it seems” part is there cause we haven’t seen the official press release.

Apparently, Sprint (NYSE: S)’s potential and existing users will be able to grab the Touch Diamond starting from August 28th. The device will cost $299 on a 2-year contract, or $549 sans any agreements signed.

Last, but not the least, the CDMA version of the Touch Diamond will come with much larger (than its GSM brother) 1,350mAh battery. Not sure how many hours of web surfing or video playback that includes, but it certainly sounds a lot…

Verizon’s UTStarcom XV6800 gets a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade

Verizon UTStarcom XV6800 gets a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade

Just when we reported the AT&T Tilt aka HTC TyTN II is getting the Windows Mobile 6.1 update, we have the same news to report for another device. This time it’s the UTStarcom (NSDQ: UTSI)-made Verizon (NYSE: VZ) XV6800.

Unfortunately, Verizon keeps locking some of the phone’s functionalities, hence even with the update if you need to use any location-based service, you’ll have to rely on the carrier’s VZ Navigator. Other third-party solutions just won’t work. Or that’s at least if you don’t go one step beyond what’s officially permitted and hack the hell out of your smartphone. Afterwards Garmin, TomTom, and others wait at your disposal…

Anyway, the update is well worth, as you’ll have more stable device, better mobile browser, and more.

But, those of you with AT&T (NYSE: T)’s own-branded version of the HTC Kaiser – the AT&T Tilt – have had to wait for AT&T and HTC to join forces and roll-out a carrier-branded version of the Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM. HTC Dream G1 scale mockup reveals design

And the HTC Dream leaks keep on coming. Not that we mind, or anything.

Following on the recent publication of the HTC Dream’s length and width dimensions, courtesy of the FCC, a newly leaked scale wire-frame mockup of the HTC Dream gives us a glimpse of what to expect when the HTC Dream G1 launches in the not-too-distant future.

The rightmost diagram includes measurements that can be applied to the rest of the scale mockups. In doing so, we find that the HTC Dream G1 is likely going to hit somewhere between 16mm and 17mm in thickness. That means the HTC Dream will be portlier than the iPhone but slimmer than the QWERTY-wielding HTC Touch Pro and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) XPERIA X1.

HTC Dream G1 Android design drawings

And, adding a little bit of a twist to our HTC Dream-story, the HTC Dream looks to be sporting a bit of a “chin.” The lower-section of the device – below the huge touchscreen (how huge, we still don’t know) – sports a “kicked out” lip. There’s speculation flying around that the HTC Dream will be an “arc slider” with that “chin” tilted toward the user. We’re not sure if the “chin” will make it to final production, and we’re not sure if we like it or not.

So, to sum it up, we know that the HTC Dream will be sporting the long-awaited Android OS, a gloriously high-resolution touchscreen display, super-fast CPU, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and the regular assortment of high-end accouterments befitting a smartphone of the HTC Dream’s caliber. Now, we have the dimensions of the device – 115 x 55 x ~16.5 mm – and a darn good idea of the HTC Dream G1’s overall design.

Now, the next step is to get one of these badass Android-powered smartphones in our hands. With a little luck, the HTC-gods will drop off an HTC Dream at our doorstep sooner rather than later.

E-Ten Glofiish X610, V900 smartphones due out soon

Back in June, we saw E-Ten announcing four cool smartphones. After almost six months, the handset maker said it will soon release two of the four devices – Glofiish X610 and Glofiish V900.

The first one, X610, is a 2.5G smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional edition. Designed for the emerging marketing, the device doesn’t exactly boasts high-end specs. Still, there’s a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 128 MB Flash ROM and 64 MB SDRAM, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera and a GPS. Samsung’s SC3 2442 CPU at 400 MHz is providing all the processing power needed.

On the other hand, the Glofiish V900 is a mobile TV ready device. Aside from the DVB-T receiver, the stylish, 3G-enabled (triband UMTS/HSDPA) smartphone packs a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, FM radio, 3 megapixel camera that can record videos at VGA resolution and a GPS. This time, Samsung’s more powerful CPU at at 533 MHz is in charge.

Pricing is not known at this stage, and the same goes for the exact release date. Stay tuned…

HTC Dream G1 sized up by FCC

By Will Park on Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 5:56 PM PST
In Devices, FCC, HTC, T-Mobile, Windows Mobile

The HTC Dream G1 is about as out-of-the-bag as it can be. But, what we don’t know about the HTC Dream G1 is how big the device will be. It’ll be a huge hit, that much is certain, but what about the HTC Dream G1’s physical dimensions.

HTC Dream G1 sized at FCC

The FCC has just approved the first Android-powered handset, the HTC Dream G1, for US-duty. What we’re seeing is that the HTC Dream G1 is quite a bit smaller than we expected. The HTC Dream, which should be hitting T-Mobile in the next couple months, will be a solid 115mm long and 55mm wide. It’s about as tall and wide as the iPhone and iPhone 3G. Unfortunately, the FCC didn’t see fit to include thickness measurements in their documentation.

We’d imagine that the HTC Dream G1 will be at least slightly thicker than the iPhone 3G, due to the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. But, that doesn’t meant the Dream will be a fat monster. Considering that the HTC Touch Pro’s slide-out keyboard maintains the device’s slim and svelte lines, we expect the HTC Dream G1 to be a sleek device.

Another Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 review – pictures galore

By Will Park on Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 12:08 PM PST
In Devices, Rumors, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile

Can’t get enough of Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s HTC-sourced superphone, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1? Of course you can’t. With a WVGA touchscreen display, WiFi, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS wrapped in Sony Ericsson’s own panel-based UI, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is definitely a superphone that’s worth a look.

Smape has posted an extensive review of their Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, complete with more pictures of the XPERIA X1 than we know what to do with. They’ve got both bases covered with the XPERIA X1 pictured in both Black and Metallic Silver finishings.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 review

Notably, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1’s camera is said to be darn decent, and could even get better with some software-enhancements from HTC. Unfortunately, the XPERIA X1’s keyboard leaves something to be desired. The keyboard is a huge selling point for a device like the X1, so here’s to hoping that both HTC and Sony Ericsson can figure out how to make their keyboard more responsive and tactile before going official.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 panel UI

For us, we’ll take the sub-par keyboard the way it is, if it means we can get our hands on the X1’s quality-build. In fact, the UK might be getting the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 right quick.

Head on over to smape.com for more pictures and the full review.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 “coming soon” to Vodafone

In Devices, Sony Ericsson, Vodafone, Windows Mobile

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

We’ve already reported the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) XPERIA X1 will be hitting United Kingdom in October. Now we have the real proof to show you. Actually, we don’t know the exact release date, but Vodafone (NYSE: VOD)’s coming soon section has a page dedicated to the Sony Ericsson’s super smartphone, suggesting we’ll have more to report about this in the near future. October is still rumored as the launch date, and somehow we’ve no reasons to believe that will not happen at that time. Stay tuned in the meantime, as we bring you more on the subject…
