With so many Twitter apps out there, it can be a challenge to find one that fits all of your needs. Sure, Twitter is a simple communication tool that utilizes messages of 140 characters, but it is also fairly complex in its feature set. Most apps utilize all of Twitter’s features, but do so in very different ways, both aesthetically and technically. To help you find the Twitter app that’s right for you, we’ve compiled a list of our top five Android Twitter apps available today.

Official Twitter App

If you’ve been using the web version of Twitter and aren’t looking for any bells and whistles, than the official Twitter app is for you. The UI has just been redesigned, making the app much more visually pleasing. It looks almost identical to the web interface, with a blue bar at the top of the screen that contains icons for searching and composing tweets. Below the top blue bar is a black bar, which allows users to switch between columns such as home, mentions, trending tweets and the user’s profile. If you have been using the web version of twitter and like to keep your twitter experience clean and simple, than this may be the app for you.

Download From Google Play: Free Version

Carbon For Twitter

The Carbon Twitter app is one of the most sleek and beautiful I’ve used thus far. Unfortunately, the app is only optimized for smartphones, but can work on certain tablets. Carbon uses a matte black background, and utilizes 3D-ish animations when swiping through columns. At the bottom of the screen lies a grey bar which displays the user’s profile picture in the middle, with a plus sign residing on the left which composes new tweets. On the right side of the bar is a button that when pressed brings a vertical sidebar that allows users quick access to favorites, lists, trending tweets, search, filters and settings. Multiple accounts are supported, for those avid tweeters who have more than one Twitter account.

Download From Google Play: Free Version

Plume

Plume for Android bears quite a resemblance in layout to the official Twitter app, with a bar at the top of the screen with buttons for refreshing the feed, composing messages and accessing settings. By swiping right from the feed column, a vertical menu is displayed, which allows easy access to search, favorites, trends and lists. Plume also allows users to add columns based on hashtags, mentions, favorites and more. Facebook is also supported in Plume, allowing users to add their Facebook feed as a column. Plume also offers multiple Twitter account support.

Download From Google Play: Free Version

TweetDeck

TweetDeck for Android offers multiple account support for both Twitter and Facebook, and displays tweets in columns that can be changed with a swipe. TweetDeck displays a bar on the bottom of the screen, with buttons that allow quick composition of messages, access to users accounts, search and a compass which displays location embedded tweets on a map. Users can add columns based on hashtags, mentions and searches. Users of the desktop client and Chrome app can seamlessly sync their columns and settings to the mobile app, making TweetDeck a great cross-platform Twitter solution.

Download From Google Play: Free Version

Falcon Pro

Falcon Pro is an amazingly beautiful and functional twitter app, which has its own built-in web browser and allows for inline viewing of videos and photos. The app has both a dark and light theme, and sports a double sliding menu UI, which when swiped right displays a menu with access to the users timeline, mentions, direct messages, search and setting. When swiping left from the home screen, a vertical menu which displays lists, saved searches and trends appears. The app has been optimized for Android tablets as well, and looks and functions impressively. The only downfall of Falcon Pro is that it does not support multiple Twitter accounts, so avid tweeters are out of luck.

Download From Google Play: Paid Version ($1.96)

Google announced yesterday that it would be shutting down their Google Reader service, the denizens of the internet were shocked, to say the least. How are we going to get our news? What about our years of feed customization? Well folks, I’m here to help you tell Google to talk to the hand. Feedly is a great alternative to Google Reader, and prettier to boot. And the company is ready for the Reader shutdown by releasing Normandy, a clone of the Google Reader API that will allow users to seamlessly port their Reader feed into Feedly.

Feedly works like most RSS aggregators, and even imports your Google Reader feeds directly into the service. Users can use the traditional browser interface, or download an Android or iOS app. Where Feedly shines, though, is its presentation. No matter which device you use to interface with Feedly, content has never looked so aesthetically pleasing. Users can pick how the interface is laid out, offering views such as magazine, timeline, mosaic and cards.

So don’t worry about that silly petition to stop Google from shutting down Reader. Feedly’s put together a step by step description of how to transition to their service from Google Reader, which follows below the pictures. So visit them on the web and download the Feedly app for Android or iOS and put your mind at ease.

Google announced today that they will be shutting down Google Reader. This is something we have been expecting for some time: We have been working on a project called Normandy which is a feedly clone of the Google Reader API – running on Google App Engine. When Google Reader shuts down, feedly will seamlessly transition to the Normandy back end. So if you are a Google Reader user and using feedly, you are covered: the transition will be seamless.

If you are a Google Reader, give feedly a try before July 1st, and you will be able to migrate seamlesly:

There are many apps out there that focus on sharing music, and now an app called Soundtracking has seemingly pulled the best parts from social networks and music sharing into one app. Soundtracking is an iOS and Android app that brings together picture sharing like Instagram, music tagging/discovery like Shazam, and location sharing features like those of FourSquare into one app so that users can “share the soundtrack of their lives.”

Since this app centers around music sharing, users must first identify a song with the app, either Shazam style via the microphone, or by playing a song on the device. After the song is identified, users can then add a picture and location data, as well as quotes and hashtags. All of these things are rolled into one sleek-looking post, with the Album art at the center. Users can then click on the album art to instantly play the song. Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare sharing are also integrated. Users can like and comment on each others activity, as well checking out what’s trending nearby and other users who have liked the song as well.

Some other features include the ability to listen to shared music via YouTube directly in the Soundtracking app, and a home and lock screen widget. The app has built-in support for Spotify and Rdio as well, and the ability to un-like tracks and posts.

Soundtracking is hands down one of the best social networking/streaming music apps I have ever used. The only problem right now, though, is that not many of my friends are using it yet. But with an expansive feature set and smooth interface, I doubt it will be long before we can dedicate songs to our friends with a finger press.

So if you’re a fan of sharing music and are tired of posting YouTube URL’s into Facebook, check out this app for an easier and fun way to share music.

Check it out at the Google Play Store or on iTunes.

The Metal Slug series has always been one of my favorites. Originally released on SNK’s Neo Geo platform, as well as in the arcade, is a relentless side scrolling shooter that will keep your fingers tapping. With simple gameplay mechanics, a variety of weapons and even getting to control a tank to blast baddies to high hell, this game stands the test of time.

Sonic CD was first released for the Sega CD, which was a unit that plugged into the Sega Genesis when video games began their transition from cartridges to CD-ROMs. This version of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog series is one of the most solid, and delivers pure Sonic enjoyment at its best, all without Knuckles and Tails.

Jet Set Radio was first released on Sega’s Dreamcast, its last and greatest console. Jet Set Radio is not only fun, but graphically it’s a treat; it drips with the trappings of the graffiti world. Did I mention that you play as a roller blader in futuristic Tokyo, running from cops and tagging the city?

And without further ado, Final Fantasy III, or Final Fantasy VI is you are a real otaku. This title is hands down one of the best Final Fantasy games to date, aside from Final Fantasy VII, that is. This version is not the original SNES version, however. In 2006, FFIII received a huge graphical makeover, and conversion to 3D and was released for the Nintendo DS platform. This is essentially that version, although the graphics have been optimized a bit.

Chrono Trigger, $9.99

Another solid RPG from Square is Chrono Trigger, an RPG with an expansive storyline and interesting characters with a focus on time travel. While Square was developing the game, it was accompanied by Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragonball series, and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, who added their flair to the adventure.

I hope you found this trip down memory lane enjoyable, my friends. Head on over to the Google Play Store and start downloading! Or if you’re a super nerd and have some old ROMS lying around, check out the RetroArch Android app that combines many emulators into one app.
