Sprint can’t compete with companies, so they just buy them

According to some weird clause in the Sprint (NYSE: S)-Nextel merger contract, the company is not allowed to compete with smaller operators. Northern PCS Services just got purchased for $312.5 million dollars and the aquistion should be complete by the end of the third quarter.

The bigger question here is who in their right mind would use Sprint?

According to The Boy Genius Report this baby is slimmer than the RAZR2. Specs include QVGA (frame rate?) video recording, QVGA screen that might have 16 million colors, a 2 megapixel camera, microUSB port, quadband with edge support and it runs the JUIX operating system.

This baby has nothing on theNokia 6500 Classic.

New USB cell phone antenna patent makes me question America's patent system even more

Samsung has filed a patent that would put a full size male USB port on your mobile phone, right where the antenna should be. Crunchgear thinks this will fail miserably due to the fact that accessory vendors like to make their systems proprietary. I think this will fail because the form factor of a standard USB port is bloody massive. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) just switched over to microUSB on the 8600 and 6500. Let us not forget that the next version of USB will be wireless and those chips will go in our devices. There was a Nokia N93 at this years CES with Wireless USB.

Windows CE inside, 100% N800 outside, don’t you love a country where piracy has extended past digital media and into physical goods? I’m not insulting China by any stretch of the imagination, plenty of exgirlfriends can tell you how much they enjoy their imitation Coach bags.

With a 4.3 inch touch screen, MSN and Internet Explorer built in, not to mention Skype, it looks like XIACHAO has a hit on their hands.

Indonesia’s Communicator Community was invited to a VIP party where the first 1000 units available in that country were sold. Reports are coming in that this device is available in Finland as well, so get ready to start importing! I hope you have a part time job because you’re going to have to cough up at least $1000 to own the latest and greatest from Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s Enterprise Division.

Bluetooth and Wibree sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g

Wibree is a technology that was developed by Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Research in 2001. It was made with low power in mind considering that the maximum data transfer rate is 1 Mbps, half that of Bluetooth 2.0, yet only uses 10%-25% the power of a standard Bluetooth IC.

Check out this 40 minute podcast Nokia published featuring Mike Foley, Executive Director Bluetooth SIG and Harri Tulimaa, Head of Technology Out-Licensing, Nokia.

There is also a marketing video [1 minute long WMV] on bluetooth.com that makes absolutely no sense. It features a Nokia E90!

Wibree forum merges with Bluetooth SIG

Bluetooth technology expands for ultra low power PAN applications with Nokia’s Wibree

Bellevue, WA, USA and Espoo, Finland – The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the more than 8,000-company strong trade association responsible for advancing Bluetooth wireless technology, joined Nokia today in announcing that the Wibree forum, the group specifying the Nokia developed ultra low power wireless technology, will be merged with the Bluetooth SIG.

With this announcement, the Wibree specification will become part of the Bluetooth specification as an ultra low power Bluetooth technology. Because Wibree addresses devices with very low battery capacity and can be easily integrated with Bluetooth technology, it will round out Bluetooth technology’s wireless Personal Area Networking (PAN) offering and strengthen the technology’s ability to provide wireless connectivity for smaller devices.

“By including or referencing other wireless technologies like ultra wideband for high speed applications, near field communication (NFC) for association and now Wibree for ultra low power applications under the well-established Bluetooth profiles, we are opening up a host of new applications and functionality while keeping the user experience consistent,” said Michael Foley, Ph. D. executive director, Bluetooth SIG. “Our members have been asking for an ultra low power Bluetooth solution. With Nokia’s innovative development and contribution to the Bluetooth specification with Wibree, we will be able to deliver this in approximately one year.”

Wibree’s development started at the Nokia Research Center in 2001. Wibree was announced to a broader audience in October of 2006 and Nokia stated its intention to incorporate the technology and its current forum into an open, preferably existing industry forum to ensure Wibree’s wide adoption.

“The development work for Wibree began when we discovered a series of interesting new use scenarios that no current local connectivity solution was addressing. Now we are happy to see Wibree become part of the open Bluetooth standard, opening new market opportunities and space to innovate for the industry,” said Jarkko Sairanen, Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Nokia. “Including Wibree within an existing forum will ensure interoperability and its wide and fast adoption. The Bluetooth SIG is the optimal new home for Wibree.”

To this day Broadcom (NSDQ: BRCM), Casio, CSR, Epson, ItoM, Logitech, Nordic Semiconductor, ST Microelectronics, Suunto, Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. and Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) have contributed to the interoperability specification, profiles and use case definition of Wibree in their respective areas of expertise and will continue this work in the Bluetooth SIG working groups. Several new companies, including device, watch and access systems manufacturers will join the finalization of the specification. Once the specification is finalized, the technology will be made broadly available to the industry via the Bluetooth SIG.

“Nokia’s contribution of its Wibree technology into the Bluetooth SIG as the basis for ultra low power Bluetooth specifications will continue to enhance the consumer experience of connecting to anything and anyone from anywhere with Bluetooth wireless technology,” said John R. Barr, Ph.D., chairman of the Bluetooth SIG board of directors. “This new technology, as the basis of a wide range of ultra low power devices, is a commendable advancement in Bluetooth technology.”

From the start, Wibree was designed to work with two implementation options – as an easily implemented extension to a classic Bluetooth radio, and as a stand-alone implementation

The Bluetooth SIG recognized the potential of Wibree to enhance current Bluetooth use cases around the mobile phone and PC by bringing very low power, sensor type devices into the fold. The ultra low power extension will allow watches and toys, as well as sports & wellness, healthcare and entertainment devices to be easily added to one’s personal area network. This opens a new range of mobile possibilities for end users.

By leveraging Bluetooth technology’s high consumer awareness (86 percent globally), the Bluetooth SIG’s large membership and proven development and qualification programs, the ultra low power solution will be integrated faster and at a lower cost to the industry and consumers. Thanks to its innovative design, Wibree consumes only a fraction of the power of classic Bluetooth radios. In many cases it makes it possible to operate these devices for more than a year without recharging.

As stated in his March 2007 ABI Research Short Range Wireless Service, research Director Stuart Carlaw predicted a $432 milllion, 809 million device industry for Wibree by 2012. Carlaw said, “We believe [Wibree] is a unique technology that can leverage the very positive market position of Bluetooth technology in segments such as medical, sports equipment and well-being, where the total available market is extremely large and still relatively untouched.”

The work of integrating the low power technology within the existing Bluetooth specification has begun and the first version of the specification is anticipated during first half of 2008.

Catching up: Part 2

That’s it! Every little piece of news I’ve been wanting to blog but haven’t is complete. Do you know how many blog posts this would have been? Blogging is a full time job and I certainly wish I got paid to do it, but I’m not. On Monday I’m going to tell you who I’m working for. I’m going to have a regular 9-5 just like everyone else. It’s for a company I don’t even like. Ouch.

Like I said, this week I will be trying a new blogging format. Instead of 20+ posts in a day I’m going to tell a story once a day with all the news that I’ve found. Anyway, without further delay, here is the news that has been sitting in my queue for almost 2 weeks:

This New York Times article is a real testament to how far behind America is in cell phone technology. We don’t know what QR codes are.

Dave Winer, the guy who invented RSS, is celebrating his 10year anniversary on the net as a blogger. On April 19 I will have had Ring Nokia (NYSE: NOK) for 5 months.

Fall Out Boy’s latest music video based on the song “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs” is just a long Nokia 5300 ad.

Nokia N77 commercial, albeit with no sound.

Some guy shoots a video showing you what S60 is like on the Nokia E65. Not bad.

All About Symbian is one of my favorite sites on the internet. I’ve missed quite a lot from them:

Steve and Rafe spent a sunny afternoon hanging out together with the Nokia N95. They provide many picture samples.
Symbian market share is in trouble. Just like any other industry, manufactures try to do anything in their power to reduce costs. If that means using Linux instead of paying for an S60 license then so be it. Symbian currently has almost 75% of the smart phone market, but this report predicts that figure dropping to less than half by 2012.
Rafe gives his opinion of the Nokia N77 based on his time with the device at 3GSM 2007. A video has also been published to accompany the text.
In the first of a series of review on the Nokia N95 Steve takes a look at the navigation features of the Nokia N95. As someone who drives around a lot and can’t live without the digital compass built into my rear view mirror, I can’t wait to own a device with GPS functionality. Hopefully by the time that happens Google (NSDQ: GOOG) will release a version of the mobile mapping software that supports Nokia’s build in GPS functionality. I’m sorry Nokia but Google Maps is so much better than Smart2GO in my honest opinion.
Rafe publishes the second installment of All About Symbian’s N95 review. This piece centers on the music capabilities of the device. It’s ridiculously long, but only because he doesn’t skimp on any details. I am displeased to hear that the N95 suffers from hiss on high end headphones. Feature request for Nokia: being able to mount my SMB shares would be awesome. I hope you review the Nokia 5700 Rafe and tell us how well this new “dedicated audio processor” performs.

Darla Mack is the poster child for S60 and Nokia blogging. Here is what I’ve missed:

The N95 will cost around $750 here in America and the N75 will be $200 after contract.
Darla Mack’s GPS finally works. It thought she was in Brazil?!
Paul from My Phone Rocks gives his opinion of the Nokia N76 after having it for several weeks. He is a Nokia employee so that’s how he gets all the cool toys we don’t have access to yet.
Remote Device Access is a new tool for developers that should make their jobs a whole lot easier.
The Nokia E90 in grey. Black or stainless steel are my colors of choice.
Nokia launched an online campaign in Asia where you can win the entire L’Amour collection. The cuteness is overwhelming.
New headsets for spring. Pink isn’t my color, but we all know it’s Darla’s favorite.
Nokia has done the most unorthodox thing ever, they remixed the Nokia tone! Enjoy these Middle Eastern renditions.

Symbian Freak compares the image quality of the Nokia N93 and N93i. What people fail to realize is the fact that what makes the N93/N93i so awesome is the video taking capabilities. I still think camera phones aren’t at the point of replacing my Canon A510. It’s going to become an even harder feat once wireless USB becomes prevalent in digital point and shoots.

James from The Creative Life Blog interviews Daniel, a man who knows how to make the images coming out of the Nokia N93 absolutely stunning. Now I know that the equipment doesn’t make the photographer, but having better tools does help.

Nokia UK is going to hire, for the first time ever, a sales director to handle the rising demand.

Unity Wireless receives $1,000,000 purchase order from Nokia India.

Nokia and VH1 premiered the first user generated music video “Voice” in India. Only 991 entires were submitted. For a country of over a billion I’m a little disappointed by that figure.

Om Malik wonders if Skype will save the Nokia Internet Tablets. Save? I think sales are doing pretty well for such a niche device. The price could certainly come down a little. I know personally I’m not going to buy one until GPS functionality is built in.

Nokia is going to release Intellisync for Linux this year.

An epic Nokia N93 and N93i review. I don’t like their style however. I much prefer Mobile Review.

Widsets in the press. This is an application I’m still not using since the last time I tried it gave me a headache.

Preview of “Creatures of the deep” on N-Gage as well as “System Rush Evolution.”

Nokia chooses an unsigned band called “Greyskull” out of Dallas to promote the “You Make it Reel” ad campaign in Asia. Don’t forget to check out the video on the bottom.

My-Symbian compares the Nokia N95 to the HTC P3300. He prefers S60, but notes that Windows Mobile has much a better calendar, a more complete today screen and the sync support is unrivaled. I’ve been following Windows Mobile with a close eye. That OS is getting ridiculously better year after year.

Carbide.c++ wins the Jolt award for “Best Mobile Development Tool.” Congratulations you guys!

Test: Blogging via Microsoft Word 2007

I want to try something new. I love your feedback so tell me what you think about this:

Instead of blogging 20+ times a day, I can just keep Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Word open all day and type one long blog post that I would publish at the end of every night.

Why would I do such a thing?

It’s easier for me. It’s easier for people subscribed via RSS. It’s easier for you guys to check this site once a day versus 50. The hits don’t matter to me, connecting to people does. I’ve spoken to at least 50 Nokia (NYSE: NOK) employees since starting this blog, partied with 4 of them in NYC and 1 has even taken me on a tour of the Nokia USA headquarters in Texas. I’ve met Rafe from All About Symbian, Darla Mack, Jonathan Greene and Robert Scoble. I probably know more about Finland now than the average American knows about the entire continent of Europe. This blog has seriously been one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life.

I still don’t get it Stefan, only once a day?

If I get a random idea or want to share some off topic videos or news then I’ll do it. I’m not putting a limit on myself to once a day; I just want to change the format is all.

I love and respect your opinions. Give me your feedback. Please.
