In Announcements, Nokia, Symbian
AllAboutSymbian is reporting that the new 4GB SDHC microSD cards that are just hitting the market are compatible with the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95, as well as the Nokia E90 Communicator. They only go as far as confirming that the 4GB SDHC microSD cards from Sandisk work with the N95, but we have no reason to believe that cards from other manufacturers wouldn’t work.
Keep in mind that Nokia doesn’t officially support these new-fangled SDHC microSD cards, but who cares? If it works, it works – right? Forget that paltry 2GB limit that current microSD cards can provide, now you can play with the big boys. So, all you lucky Nokia N95 owners – go forth and turn that multimedia computer of yours into a multimedia powerhouse!

Oh, and let us know if any 4GB SDHC microSD cards from manufacturers other than Sandisk work on your N95, will ya?

In Announcements, Palm, Palm OS
It looks like Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is following in the footsteps of Motorola with their plan to lay-off some of its employees. But, whereas Motorola (NYSE: MOT) cut thousands of jobs in hopes of saving some much needed cash, Palm is looking to streamline their organization. A Palm spokesperson told News.com that the move is aimed at “eliminating some of the hierarchy” – particularly, but not limited to, the development team. We’re not sure exactly how many heads are going to roll with this move, but we’re pretty sure it won’t be anywhere near 4,000.
If you’ll remember, Elevation Partners (headed by rock-music star, Bono) recently bought a 25% stake in the company – for $325 million. The deal has yet to be approved by Palm shareholders.

CECT sure is on a roll recently – but as fake PSP phones go, this one’s pretty lame. The only aspect that CECT ripped from the Sony PSP is the silvery, circle logo on the backside of the device (and the PSP-like lettering). We’re not sure what “GVP” stands for, but the CECTN518-1 sports a built-in NES emulator for playing all those illegal NES ROMs. And, with a 3-inch display, you’ll have plenty of gaming-space.
At least you get a 1.3 megapixel camera and microSD slot for your troubles. Large screen be damned – we’d never be caught dead (or alive for that matter) carrying around one of these things.

CECT, known for their prodigious clone-manufacturing, has released their CECT198 with a keypad that is strikingly similar to the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) K810 – but then again, making strikingly similar pieces is what CECT does best. Why they didn’t just go for broke and completely clone the SE K810 is beyond us. Still, the CECT198 sports a 2 megapixel camera, 2.4 inch QVGA screen, microSD slot, and stereo speakers – packaged into a 105×47x16 mm body that tips the scales at 86g.

The angels have heard our prayers and the sky has opened up to deliver us teenage girls dancing in a suggestive manner wearing nothing but underwear, music videos from all over the world, stand up comedians, Paris Hilton crying like a 4 year old and endless clips of The Daily Show. YouTube on your mobile phone is alive and kicking!
Open your browser and go to http://m.youtube.com, you’re going to need a device capable of streaming RTSP/3GP with H263/AMR according to Gizmodo. You can also upload clips via MMS to YouTube, but I strongly prefer using blip.tv’s ftp capability.

In Announcements, Apple, Devices, iPhone
Remember that cute little Bluetooth headset that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) announced as an official accessory for the iPhone (and yes, we said “cute”)? Well, it just got the green-light from the mighty FCC for use in the US. As is par for this course, details like pictures and users manuals are locked down on the FCC website, courtesy of confidentiality requests from Apple. But, we can tell you that the headset will feature only a single button and will automatically pair with your precious iPhone – and will still work with the rest of your Bluetooth phones.
It looks like we’re going to have to save up a bit more so that we can get this headset when we go to buy our iPhone. Our collection of tiny and sleek headsets just won’t feel right being paired with the iPhone (that was probably Apple’s plan). It’s a good thing we still have a couple weeks!

Motorola’s been tapped to spearhead the GSMA’s NFC-based Pay-Buy-Mobile trials. The trial will help Motorola (NYSE: MOT) provide feedback to the GSMA Near Field Communications Technical Guidelines white paper – furthering development of NFC standardization while giving Motorola a head start on achieving their goal of providing the world with mobile payment and financial systems.
All the major credit card companies will be giving their blessing to this trial

In Announcements, Devices, LG
LG’s Shine series is something of a beacon in the fashion-phone segment. The phones are beautifully crafted and designed, but they also come with hefty price tags. No more! LG has introduced their Shine KX256 for the lower-end (read: cheaper) of the pricing spectrum. The phone isn’t as slim as the higher end models, but you get what you pay for! The SLVR-esque Shine goes down-market with the 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and radio – but doesn’t skimp on solid build-quality and snazzy good looks.
Too bad it’s an Asia-only release. We apologize for the tease.
As usual, hit the link for pics!

In Announcements, Applications, Services
There’s been a lot of hype around the mobile download side of iTunes that will be rolled on June 29 -Â enabling Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone owners (future owners, that is) to download music straight from iTunes. Mobile music downloads are the future, and that’s why it’s nice to see Omnifone launching their MusicStation service in Sweden – beating Apple to the mobile music downloading punch! An Omnifone spokesman stated that “We have actually beaten iPhone to the market by two weeks on a global level,” adding MusicStation has signed deals with the four largest music labels – Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music and Warner Music International.
Don’t get us wrong, we love the Apple iPhone, but we also love to see other guys take a shot at Apple. The MusicStation service launched in Sweden yesterday, and will roll out in Europe, Asia, and Africa in the coming weeks. Norwegian Telenor subscribers can download unlimited songs for about $4 per week – and will work on about 80% of existing handsets out there today. We really like the weekly subscription model – download like crazy for one week, and you’re good for a month or two!
Check out MusicStation today!

In Announcements, Devices, O2
O2 (NYSE: TEF)’s music-oriented Cocoon is curvy and sleek, just like the name would suggest, but there’s a lot more to it than that. The white, cocoon-like (makes sense, doesn’t it?) clamshell’s seemingly opaque outer shell lights up from underneath with LED lights that show time, caller ID, and music functions.
And, as any decent musicphone does, this one packs a healthy does of internal storage – 2GB worth of health. If that’s not enough music-space for you, the microSD slot can hook it up with another 2GB. You also get a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth with A2DP support (of course), FM radio, MP3 player (who woulda thunk?), and the ability to play DRM-free iTunes Plus songs.

By you, we mean those of you in the UK, because this thing’s gonna launch sometime in August in the UK for about $590 (with no contract). If you’re like us and you just can’t wait for this thing to drop, check out the video:
