Video: HTC HD2 has multi touch enabled Remote Desktop

By Stefan Constantinescu on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 2:35 AM PST
In Applications, HTC, Windows Mobile

If you’re a network administrator then brace yourself for this video. What you’re about to see is the HTC HD2 running a modified version of the Remote Desktop application for Windows Mobile. This tweaked version takes advantage of the capacitive touch screen that the HD2 has to enable multi touch zooming. On the 4.3 inch, with 800 x 480 pixels of resolution, it looks absolutely stunning. Check out Will’s review of the Touch HD2 if you’re interested in more details about the device. It’s expected to launch in America during the first quarter of 2010.

For those of you unfamiliar with Remote Desktop, it allows you to take over another computer. On your display you see the screen of another machine, and whatever you type on your keyboard will be sent to that remote machine. As a former network administrator I can’t emphasize enough how important Remote Desktop is as a tool when troubleshooting computers and settings things up when deploying new machines.

gridMob’s iOKi brings karaoke to an iPhone/iPod Touch near you; Lady Gaga version announced, first

Lady Gaga iOKi - iPhone app

A company called gridMob is bringing what they say is the “first true karaoke experience for iPhone and iPod Touch” to the AppStore. The application is called iOKi and in addition to putting a karaoke machine in your pocket, it also allows users to browse and purchase tracks from a vast catalog of songs – they’ve signed contracts with all major labels.

And the news doesn’t stop that. In addition to the “generic” version of the application (which is still not available in the AppStore), gridMob has also announced a special, Lady Gaga-branded application, who [Lady Gaga] I’m not sure I like. But considering just how popular Lady Gaga seems to be these days, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the app becoming a bestseller. It comes with four Lady Gaga karaoke tracks featuring her master recordings, plus the newly released “Bad Romance” from her soon to be released album “Fame Monster.” All this could be yours for $4.99 (a dollar per song). Moreover, gridMob prepares to release other versions of iOKi app, branded by other artists later in the year…

Brief: Spotify for Symbian launched

By Stefan Constantinescu on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 12:06 AM PST
In Applications, Services, Symbian

Spotify, the Swedish music service that many in Western and Northern Europe have been enjoying for a little over a year now, has finally released a Symbian application! Complementing their iPhone and Android application, this new Symbian application makes the Spotify service available to over half the smartphones recently sold in Europe. I’d give you a video demo, but I’m not a Spotify Premium member. I’d like to be a Spotify Premium member, but their billing system doesn’t take my Finnish credit card, nor my American credit card for some strange reason.

To download the client, simply visit http://m.spotify.com in your mobile browser and it will automatically detect the device you’re using and begin downloading.

CoPilot Live wins top spot amongst paid apps on Android Market

By Ben Robinson on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 at 3:44 PM PST
In Applications, GPS/Satellite Navigation

ALK Technologies, the makers of the popular CoPilot Live Sat Nav software, have announced that their software is doing very well in it’s Android guise – since its launch on Android Market in June, it has risen to become the top paid application on Android Market in the UK. The UK and Europe apps currently hold the number one and number two positions of all paid travel apps respectively.
ALK Technologies has recently released their latest free update for CoPilot Live for Android, adding text to speech voice directions and full compatibility with the latest Donut and Eclair versions of Android. This brings full on-board turn by turn navigation to the latest handsets including Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid and HTC Tattoo.
CoPilot Live brings full featured turn-by-turn navigation to the Android platform, complete with automatic route calculation, some nice 3D map displays, and turn-by-turn voice directions.  Digital street maps are stored on-device, rather than relying on mobile Internet connectivity for per-trip downloads.
A range of CoPilot ‘Live’ services, delivered via the phone’s mobile Internet connection, are also available – these include safety camera alerts, 5-day weather forecast information and a new location sharing service called CoPilot® LiveLink™.
CoPilot Live Navigation UK & Ireland can be purchased and downloaded immediately from Android Market for just £25.99.  The European maps version (Western and Eastern Europe) retails at £59.99.
If you happen to have an iPhone, I can also heartily recommend that version of the App – it’s rather good also!

Seesmic Released for Android and BlackBerry

By Simon Sage on Saturday, November 21st, 2009 at 6:43 PM PST
In Android, Applications, BlackBerry, Social Networking

Heavy-duty social networkers will be familiar with the name “Seesmic“, a desktop and web Twitter client. It has officially gone mobile for Android and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), with the expected features such as home screen notifications, picture sharing, timeline viewing, saved searches, and basic tweeting. The one thing I haven’t seen elsewhere on a BlackBerry twitter client yet is lists support; more specifics can be found on the BlackBerry page. The Android version has a few cool tricks, like saving tweets as drafts and video sharing, but to get a closer look, check out Seesmic’s Android page. To get downloading, point your mobile browser to seesmic.com or find it in the Android Market.

Pizza Hut’s iPhone app scores two MMA awards

Pizza Hut iPhone app

We’ve already reported about Pizza Hut’s success with its iPhone app. Well, in addition to the numbers achieved ($1 million in sales), the company is all proud to announce that it also won two MMA’s (Mobile Marketing Association) global awards: Mobile Display Campaign in North America, and Emerging Technology Campaign in North America.

Commenting on tha announcement, Pizza Hut’s Bernard Acoca said: “It’s an honor to be recognized as a mobile marketing leader by the MMA with wins in two categories. The Pizza Hut iPhone App continues to be an applauded breakthrough digital innovation that connects with consumers and industry organizations.”

Now I’m hoping other restaurants will follow Pizza Hut’s example and make the food ordering as simple and convenient as it should be, and ultimately make more money along the way. ;)

Smart Thermostat lets iPhone/iPod Touch users remotely regulate temperature in their homes; Special equipment required, of course

Smart Thermostat for iPhone

A company called ecobee has released a new application in the AppStore called Smart Thermostat, allowing users with compatible (i.e. expensive) systems to remotely adjust the thermostat’s temperature, schedule or update vacation events, change the system and fan operating settings. In addition, the application alerts users about the status of the system.

See where that’s going? Soon enough every iPhone user will be able to have all the benefits of Bill Gates’ famous digital home. The problem, however, is not in the available apps, it’s the high-end equipment that costs fortune that keeps many folks, myself included, from pushing our homes into the digital age. :(

Anyway, AppStore link is here, and no, I don’t hate you if you can use it. :)

xbap wpf web browser app Surf your Windows Phone with Remote Access

There are plenty of apps out there that allow you to control your computer from your smartphones, but what if you want to browse your Windows Phone from your desktop computer? Well, then you’ll want to check out WiFi Remote Access for Windows Mobile. The new Windows Mobile app installs itself on your Windows Phone and acts as a bridge between the phone and your computer, allowing you to connect to your handset via WiFi and browse its contents through a web browser (like the one you’re using to read this very sentence).

Remote Access is still in beta, but doesn’t skimp on features. You can view photos, complete with thumbnails. You can listen to the music you have stored on the phone. You can even edit your Windows Phone’s registry through the app.

There’s no desktop installation required. Simply install the Windows Mobile app on your smartphone and point your desktop computer’s browser to the handset’s IP address. It’s that simple.

Find more information on Remote Access here. Grab Remote Access here.

FunMail for iPhone – MMS with a twist

By Will Park on Friday, November 20th, 2009 at 12:21 PM PST

LetsGetCoffeeInstead FunMail for iPhone MMS with a twist

Quick, raise your hand if you sent an MMS from your iPhone this past week. Okay, how about this past month? If you’re not raising your hand, your either A) not following the rules of this game or B) just like the millions of Americans that just don’t send out MMS (picture messages) regularly from their iPhones. I fall into the latter category. Today’s release of FunMail might change all that.

FunMail for iPhone automatically analyzes your text message and serves up relevant images that you can embed into your message. The idea behind FunMail is to bring MMS out of the dark ages and allow people to use images for rich communication. Rather than send your friend a text message asking them if they want to eat, FunMail would have you send them the same text with overlaid on an image of a burger. You can even send that messages to Twitter and Facebook.

The trick to making picture-chats convenient is FunMail’s “Media Brain,” which pulls out the semantic meaning behind your text and gives the user a set of pictures that might fit the situation. If you’re talking about going to lunch, FunMail returns images of food. Talk about a birthday, and you get birthday-related images.

The app is free in the iPhone AppStore, so it won’t hurt to give it a shot. I personally can’t see myself using FunMail for everyday communication, but it’s definitely worth trying out at least once.

Check out FunMail’s demo video here.

Facebook for BlackBerry Gets an Update to 1.7.0.22

blackberry facebook Facebook for BlackBerry Gets an Update to 1.7.0.22Regular users of the Facebook app for BlackBerry will want to take note that the app has been updated to 1.7.0.22. Of course, no changelog is available, but if you’re addicted to the thing it’s probably a good idea to update to the latest version (if you haven’t already). To get started, simply head on over to blackberry.com/facebook from your Berry’s browser, and you’re off to the races.

Be sure to let us know if you spot any updates worth noting… Me thinks this update is just chalked-full of minor tweaks and bug fixes.
