Jay Sullivan, Vice President of Mobile at Mozilla, runs through Firefox for Maemo on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N900 in the video below and shows off how tabs work, the “awesome bar”, and extensions. You may be asking yourself what’s the point of Mozilla building Firefox for Mobile? WebKit has the largest share of the mobile browser space, and they’re doing a damn fine job at what they do, but you have to remember that WebKit isn’t a browser, it’s just a rendering engine. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), Google (NSDQ: GOOG), RIM, they’re all building browsers that are powered by WebKit, whereas Mozilla is actually building a complete browser that you as a consumer can install on your mobile device similar to how you install Firefox on a fresh install of Windows today. Key difference. No clue as to when Firefox Mobile will be finished, and what platforms it will support, but at least you can sleep soundly at night knowing that there is a company fighting to make the internet a better experience regardless of the device you use.

So there you go – I’ve not had a chance to play it yet, so I can’t comment on what it’s like – but if you’d like to check out some screenshots then you can do it here.
Whilst TomTom is often considered to be the leading brand for standalone Sat Nav systems, the situation on Mobile devices is quite radically different.
Craving a new puzzle game on your iPhone? One that you may want to check out is called ‘Penguin Break’. Like other puzzle games of this genre, the object of the game is to clear the board. You do so by tapping on penguins to throw snowballs, and each time you hit a penguin it will disappear, along with other adjacent penguins of the same color. You can create chain reactions for big bonuses (think ‘Bejeweled’)… and there are multiple power ups to be found within the game. Play in ‘Frenzy’ mode which puts you against the clock, or play a more classic style game in ‘Escape’ mode where you try and keep the penguins from reaching the top of the field of play.
For more details check out the demo video above, or pick it up for $0.99 in the App Store (iTunes link).
BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) users have to check out this interesting new app from the folks at VirtualViews. Called ‘Elertify’, this new app allows you to preview incoming email, messages, phone calls and more right on your PC. My description won’t do it justice, so listen to Drew from VirtualViews describe and show-off the app in the video above.
‘This app was designed for people who use their PC a lot. It lets you preview incoming email, text messages and phone calls on your PC so that you don’t have to be checking your BlackBerry every 15 seconds… you can turn on the voice synthesizer and actually hear who’s calling…’
Once connected it looks like Elertify works wonderfully. Alerts pop up in the bottom right corner of your monitor, and you can dismiss the alerts by simply clicking on them.
Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has just released Google Mobile App 2.03 for Symbian devices and it now includes voice search! The iPhone, Android and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) have had this for a while if I’m not mistaken, so this feature is welcome for us Nokia (NYSE: NOK) users. Just launch the application, hold the green call key, and say your query. I tested it by saying “five hundred thousand Vietnamese dong in euros” and it worked beautifully, but then again I’m sitting alone in my dead silent flat. Does this work for you outdoors?
To download the app just go to m.google.com in your mobile browser.
Update: An official blog post from Google detailing the new application, along with a video that has been produced for UK audiences, has been published.
Slacker Radio has been updated for all of the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) and iPhone users out there. The latest update is a minor one, bringing the killer radio app up to 2.0.91. If you’ve never heard of or used Slacker before, it’s a US-only radio service available on a web player, portable radio player (the Slacker G1 and G2) or on your mobile device (iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry). The cool thing about it is you can create and share your own customized music stations. Start with one of the app’s presets, or browse a list of artists to build your station, and go from there. Very nifty. Earlier this year Slacker had over 2.4 million songs, with 100 programmed stations and 10,000 artist stations available.
Sadly, as seems to be the trend, no changelog has been made available… But rest assured you can get everything you need over at Slacker.com.

Note: If the developers can here me… Would be mighty nifty if a free trial was available…
During their Q3 2009 financial results conference call, TomTom announced that they sold close to 80,000 copies of their iPhone application. Pretty rad considering the total cost of ownership, for the application itself and the dock to stick the thing in your car, is over $200.
Palm (NSDQ: PALM) seems to struggle to get developers on board. The idea would be to sell the Pre and Pixi in more countries and engage the worldwide developer base, as the current strategy doesn’t seem to work. Their App Catalog now counts 300 titles, which is very, very poor. To be fair, webOS is a brand new platform and I guess it’s fair to give Palm some space, but something needs to be done, nonetheless.
In comparison, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s AppStore now counts 100,000 apps, whereas Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s Android Market goes for 10,000. C’mon Palm, start selling your phones in India and China and organize some contest to get some hot spanking apps in the Catalog. We want you to succeed, honestly!
