Nokia Star Trek mini site

We’ve already talked about the futuristic Nokia device found in the new Star Trek movie. To further bank on the publicity, the Finnish giant has launched a dedicated Star Trek mini site, where it promotes its current touch-enabled flagship device – Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 5800 Xpress Music.

The new site is visible both on desktop computers, as well as on mobile screens (there’s an optimized-for-mobile version), offering free Star Trek mobile content (screensavers, ringtones and wallpapers) for various Nokia devices…

Enough said, here’s Nokia’s Star Trek page. You should be able to find your way around it easily. ;)

LiveCast Lightning brings real-time video from mobile devices for media companies

LiveCast

A company called LiveCast has unveiled their latest offering called Lightning, which is “poised to revolutionize the television news industry.” Sure, we’ve heard such claims in the past, but LiveCast may actually do something about it — this is not to say we approve using the word “revolution” and its abbreviations in the press releases. :)

Their idea is to enable newsrooms to go live with real-time video from mobile devices without any delay in transmission from the field to the studio.

When breaking news hits, high-impact on-air interviews with field reporters can be conducted in real-time via mobile devices. As live video from mobile devices now reaches the performance standards of satellite trucks – both in delivery speed and high definition visual quality – the stage is finally set for live video from cell phones to hit prime-time. Many organizations, including NBC Universal, already rely upon LiveCast to transmit live video instantaneously from the field to the television studio as well as to websites, social media outlets and direct to decision makers.

So, basically they are not pitching their technology to the end users, but to media companies. In that sense, I’ve no doubts it will work better than let’s say Qik’s free solution. Qik is designed for the masses and we love it for that reason. ;)

Sony Ericsson Themes Creator

Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE)’s popular Themes Creator tool has been recently updated to make theme creation process easier than ever. Thanks to the simplified three-step workflow, just about anyone can make professional-looking themes for Sony Ericsson phones. Moreover, the application features three editing modes (Wizard, Advanced and XML Editor), and a brand new user interface.

To illustrate how easy is to make a theme, let’s go through the mentioned three-step process:

  1. Select color scheme using automatic color combinations, color wheel tool or import saved color palettes (Adobe Kuler support is included!)
  2. Import background images for standby wallpaper, desktop and navigation screens
  3. Select style using predefined shapes and screen areas

…And you’re ready to go!

Finally, in an effort not to piss users of the old version of the tool, Sony Ericsson made sure backwards compatibility is on place. What this means is that you can still use Adobe Flash Lite animations as wallpaper elements (Standby screen)…

Interested? The Sony Ericsson Themes Creator v4.0 is available in English and Chinese and you can grab it from here.

L.A. Times News Reader

L.A. Times can’t miss the boat, hence the company is joining the “iPhone wave.” As a matter of fact, the popular paper released two applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch users:

I guess at the end we’ll have an iPhone app for virtually every media outlet. Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) certainly succeeded enticing companies to join the AppStore. Hopefully, the same will happen with the Android Market, Ovi Store and other mobile marketplaces. We’ll see…

In the meantime, our very own Will, who lives in L.A., just got a new app to enjoy on a daily basis. Like it buddy? ;)

Make your iPhone look like the Palm Pre

Palm Pre iPhone theme

Today we’re presenting you with a neat theme, obviously created by the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre fan, MMi forum member “balderson.” You’ve probably guessed correctly, the idea is to make the iPhone look like its Palm’s highly anticipated smartphone. In that sense, the theme features 21 icons, although balderson wowed to add more in the future.

If you dig the idea, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch to proceed. If that’s on place, simply search for “Pre” in Cydia. As far as I’ve understood, it should be there. Alternatively, you may want to read more details, prior to pushing the button, and you can do that from this thread on MMi forums

Star Trek gets an unofficial iPhone theme; Jailbroken devices, only

Star Trek iPhone theme

The new Star Trek movie is about to hit the theaters and if you wanna show off just how dedicated fan you are, you could Star Trek-ize your iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s not an official theme, though, but it does look decent. Scrap that I love it, or that’s just a Star Trek fanboy in me talking.

Anyway, like with all themes, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch to install it. So, if you ever needed a reason to go the “jailbreak way,” now you may have one.

Finally, in case you’re wondering, it’s the work of MMi forum member “Imagine09.” Look for it in Cydia…

Just kidding, the company is the “premier source” of lifestyle media with more than 75 publications, 90 web sites, 400 branded products, 65+ events and TV and radio programs, and they are partnering with UI Evolution (the same company which helped Samsung open up its TouchWIZ platform) to launch their first iPhone application called LOWRIDER Mobile.
