ASUS should license Ubuntu for Android for its Padfone

Few days ago I ranted about Ubuntu for Android, saying that I can’t wait to install it on my smartphone. Today I have a related idea to discuss with you. At the moment, Canonical doesn’t allow users to download Ubuntu for Android (or perhaps it’s still not ready for prime time), and the company is rather looking for OEMs to license the software. I believe that the “perfect vendor” to take advantage of this software is ASUS, which should offer it pre-installed on its Padfone series. This way Padfone users Read more

UK’s Phones 4U scores exclusive launch rights for the white Huawei Ascend P2

Few days ago we’ve told you that Huawei Ascend P2 is coming to the UK, and now we have Phones 4U saying that it managed to score the exclusive launch rights for the white version of the device. The mobile specialist failed to mention the exact launch date and pricing, but we tend to believe interested users will be able to grab the Ascend P2 in white for free as long as they commit on a two-year contract with one of the major carriers, including Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, EE and Read more

Philips Xenium W8510, the company’s first quad-core smartphone, launching in June

Philips is getting ready to launch its very first quad-core smartphone in June. Details are still scarce about the upcoming Xenium W8510, but we do expect it to have a “standard for Xenium devices” powerful battery, providing the “superb stand-by time.” It is said that the phone will have a 4.7-inch HD screen (720p?) while that quad-core processor will be clocked at 1.2GHz. It’s unknown which company makes that CPU but it’s likely we’re talking about MediaTek’s product since Philips usually sells its phones in China, where MediaTek-powered gear is Read more

A new Disney smartphone coming to Japan

Another Disney smartphone has been unveiled in Japan with NTT DoCoMo announcing plans to sell the DoCoMo F-07E. Set to hit the streets from mid-July, it isn’t just cute but also a pretty powerful device. Under the hood, the F-07E hides a 1.7GHz quad-core processor (most likely Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro), 2GB of RAM and a 13.1-megapixel camera sensor (for the rear camera). The phone is also waterproof, making sure you keep receiving calls and texts even after accidental drops in the water. Plus, let’s not forget the mobile TV Read more

India’s Micromax to launch a 5.5-inch full HD phablet in June

India’s Micromax will enter the phablet space next month with a device of its own. Dubbed Micromax A120 Canvas HD Pro, it will be released in June, sporting a 5.5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) screen, MediaTek’s quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera on the back. It is said that Micromax will offer its phablet for as little as 20,000 INR, which translates into some $385. That’s pretty aggressive pricing that will help the Indian company compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note II. As I’m writing Read more

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition to be unveiled at Google I/O

Samsung may not make the next Nexus phone but that doesn’t mean it’s done with making devices running the stock Android OS. One such smartphone will apparently be on display at Google I/O later today and it will be called the Galaxy S4 Google Edition. It’s the same Galaxy S4 under the hood without the Korean company’s proprietary software running on top of Android core. You may think that’s even better but let’s not forget some of the cool technologies that come on the “standard” Galaxy S4 like Smart Stay, Read more

Sony Xperia A announced in Japan

Sony has officially announced the Xperia A in Japan where it will be sold by NTT DoCoMo, the country’s leading mobile operator. The device we’ve already seen at the FCC is a high-end Android 4.1 smartphone with specs that include a 4.6-inch 720p HD screen, LTE connectivity support, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 13-megapixel rear camera, VGA front-facing one and a 2,300mAh battery. Of course, we would appreciate an even faster (newer) processor like Snapdragon 600, but I guess the lack of it will push the price down. In any Read more

China’s Xiaomi working on a laptop?

If you’ve been living under a rock, you may’ve missed Xiaomi and it’s great phones. The company has a sort of cult following in China with its phones selling out in days after the launch. But phones alone may not be enough for this growing giant with the new information suggesting they’re also looking to enter the laptop market. According to rumors spreading across Weibo (Chinese Twitter), Xiaomi may launch a 15.6-inch laptop in August. Reportedly, this computer will come with Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, GT660M graphics Read more

Nokia Lumia 925 officially announced: it’s like thinner and lighter Lumia 920 with aluminum body and new software

Nokia has officially announced a new member of its smartphone range – Lumia 925. The device is pretty much improved version of the existing Lumia 920, dumping polycarbonate for more durable (and sexier) aluminum. The new Lumia is also thinner and lighter than its predecessor, while the rest of the specs are pretty much the same — i.e. it comes with a 4.5-inch 1280×768 OLED screen, 8.7MP rear camera, 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and so on. Unfortunately, the Xenon-based flash found in Verizon’s Nokia Lumia 928 Read more

Sharp AQUOS 206SH announced in Japan; Probably not hitting the West

Japan’s SoftBank has announced the Sharp AQUOS 206SH, a fancy-lookin’ Android 4.2 smartphone with features that include a 5-inch full HD screen, Qualcomm’s quad-core processor and 13.1-megapixel camera. All this comes as standard in similar products sold elsewhere (i.e. Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, etc); what doesn’t is an enormous 3,080mAh battery, which is usually found in phablets with 5.3-inch or larger screens. Sharp used the super-thin CG Silicon TFT LCD to make room for such big battery. The mentioned display also offers improved performance while consuming less power. Read more
