Fallen Earth MMO Getting an iPhone App

The post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Fallen Earth, has just announced an in-depth iPhone app that lets you take care of quite a bit of in-game business from your mobile. For those not familiar with the genre, MMOs are generally subscription-based computer games that take place wholly online with other players (either cooperatively or competitively, as the case may be). Players control characters in the shared game world to embark on missions, gather equipment, craft items, and a bunch of other stuff. If you’ve heard of World of Warcraft, then you know what an MMO is.

Anyway, Fallen Earth is working on an app that allows players to do a few things in-game without having to be at your computer, which is actually really handy since things keep happening in the game even when you’re not playing. Folks will be able to view character information similar to WoW’s Armory app for iPhone, but the real kicker will be talking to clan members, managing auction house sales, and crafting queues remotely; that’s changing the mobile app from an MMO companion reference to an actual part of the game, which I really like. Classic Apple II game Transylvania ported to iPhone

Here’s one for hard-core back-from-the-days Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) dans – the Apple II classic text adventure Transylvania has been ported to iPhone!

Those not familiar with the game should check out a dedicated Wikipedia page for all the details. I’ll only point out key facts about the iPhone version:

The game was remade in collaboration with Antonio Antiochia, the original author of Transylvania!
Gameplay has been updated and you don’t have to text input commands. Using the magic of touch is enough, but if you’re so nostalgic that options still exists.
The graphics has been updated, which is kinda expected.

The price is 99 cents which is like nothing for the experience of time travelling.

Gameloft: What recession? We had 18% growth in sales in the first nine months of this year!

There’s no recession for the leading mobile games developer Gameloft. During the first nine months of 2009, the company’s consolidated sales went up by 18%, reaching 90.2 million EUR. On a constant exchange rate basis, that’s actually 16%, which is still impressive.

Here’s how the numbers went from quarter to quarter compared to the last year (in millions EUR):

Q1 2009 – 30.8 vs Q1 2008 – 25.3 (+22%)
Q2 2009 – 29.3 vs Q2 2008 – 25.0 (+17%)
Q3 2009 – 30.1 vs Q3 2008 – 26.2 (+`15%)
9-month total – 90.2 vs 76.5 (+18%)

During the first nine months of 2009, Europe, North America and the rest of the world represented 38%, 33% and 29% of total sales, respectively…

Highlights Hidden Pictures is the classic seek-and-find game for the iPhone, iPod Touch

Highlights for Children is launching its first iPhone app – the original Highlights Hidden Pictures game, which (as you can presume) targets iPhone and/or iPod Touch-ownin’ parents.

The seek-and-find game is designed to challenge child’s visual skills to allow him/her to locate hidden objects within Highlights’ classic kid-friendly illustrations. There are over a hundred hidden objects to find and when each is located, it turns from black and white to color and a sound chimes to announce the discovery.

In total, Highlights Hidden Pictures features eight puzzles, and two free additional puzzles are available after registration. The price is $1.99. (iTunes link)

Point and click adventure Dracula: the Path of the Dragon hitting AppStore soon

A new point and click adventure will be hitting the AppStore later this fall. It’s called Dracula: the Path of the Dragon and it promises to deliver tons of fun, mixing myth and reality, science and history, and medicine and superstition.

The storyline sees you controlling Father Arno Moriani, who is sent to investigate a potential candidate for sainthood in Transylvania. The year is 1920 and you begin investigation of Dr. Martha Calugarul in the village of Vladoviste, half-destroyed in World War I. On the hillside sits the Castle of Twilight, the famed home of Vlad the Impaler. Father Arno begins to track a mysterious figure he believes is responsible for evil deeds in the area. He realizes later, that he is inadvertently walking the path of the dragon. As you solve puzzles based on medicine, history, and the occult, you’ll uncover the mystery of the dragon and of the vampires…

Yap, I’m intrigued with the idea and screenshots look promising, hence I can’t wait to play it. The price is unknown at this stage, but I’m guessing that’s something we’ll know sooner rather than later. And while we’re waiting for the game release, we have a trailer to share. PlayHaven opens its fan community for games platform for iPhone developers

Online universe of fan communities for games PlayHaven is “going iPhone” by opening up its platform to the iPhone developers. As a result, interested individuals and companies which make iPhone games can instantly establish a community presence online and in-game for free. This translates into generating some buzz for the games, as users will get the option to share, gather and interact with other members of the community.

The process seems easy (though I haven’t tried it myself) and it should apparently take only a minute or so to claim your community and integrate various social features into an iPhone app.

Around 20 games have already integrated PlayHaven’s capabilities — including Minigore, Geared, I Dig It, The Quest, Mouse House 2, SnowFerno, iSamurai, BobbleSurfer, ZombieSmash!, Transylvania, Genius Defense Force, Gang Street Wars, Hopple, Tipoli, Influence, Above and Cell War, to name just a few.

Sounds cool and I’m hoping PlayHaven will also allow other platform developers to use the same features. Someone said Android? Symbian?

Command & Conquer: Red Alert for iPhone Now Available

Although a little bit later than expected, the real-time strategy classic, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, is now available on the iPhone. RA lets you play as either Allies or Soviets across 12 levels of resource gathering, unit building, and, of course, military conquest. Gamers out there will be familiar with name, although understandably wary about gameplay on a smaller screen. By the looks of the screenshots, Red Alert looks wholly playable and potentially a lot of fun if EA took their time and made sure everything was properly redesigned for mobile. Downloadable expansions will broaden gameplay by adding multiplayer capabilities and another unique faction down the line… Looking forward to it! In the meantime, you can nab Red Alert in the App Store for $9.99.

Penguin Break for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Craving a new puzzle game on your iPhone? One that you may want to check out is called ‘Penguin Break’. Like other puzzle games of this genre, the object of the game is to clear the board. You do so by tapping on penguins to throw snowballs, and each time you hit a penguin it will disappear, along with other adjacent penguins of the same color. You can create chain reactions for big bonuses (think ‘Bejeweled’)… and there are multiple power ups to be found within the game. Play in ‘Frenzy’ mode which puts you against the clock, or play a more classic style game in ‘Escape’ mode where you try and keep the penguins from reaching the top of the field of play.

Doom Classic is in the AppStore!

Just when we talked about Platinum update for Wolfenstein 3D, another first person shooter classic has hit the AppStore. It’s Doom Classic, which you probably already know everything about. However, there may be some things you don’t know. For instance, you’ll care to learn that Doom Classic contains all three episodes of the original game along with a new episode called “Thy Flesh Consumed.” That’s 36 missions in total, enough to keep you entertained for quite some time.

There are three control schemes, all of them customizable. Plus multiplayer works!!! That’s only over WiFi at the moment, but something tells me online mode will be added at some point in the future, as well.

In a nutshell, it’s a must download for every nostalgic FPS fanatic. The price is $6.99 and the AppStore link is here.

Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone gets a Platinum update: Spear of Destiny levels and custom maps support!

Existing owners of the Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone, here’s a piece of good news for you. An updated version of the first person shooter classic for your favorite handset/iPod Touch has been released. Included in the mix are Spear of Destiny levels – 21 new maps, five new bosses and a new enemy type – ghosts. In addition — and this is where it gets really cool — now you can create and download custom-made maps, just like you could do it in a computer version of the game!

iD Software has set a special page explaining how to use all those custom maps, which you can check out from this link.

The price of the game remains unchanged and it’s $1.99 (AppStore link), quite a bargain considering you’ll get hours of entertainment for those two bucks.

Angry Mob Games‘ upcoming top-down, twin-sticks shooter Guerrilla Bob is one badass looking game. The main character wears a beret, has tons of weapons, and is named ‘Bob’. That right there is the recipe for badass, folks.

Guerrilla Bob will take players across a number of locations like canyons, deserts, and deserted towns. Along the way, he’ll most likely meet some opposition as well as “epic boss battles”. The game will also include multiple levels of difficulty, scoring system, and online leaderboards so you can compare with your friends who the best Bob is!

Alice in Bomberland adds new spin to the famous story

A company called Sonic Boom has launched a new game for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Alice in Bomberland. Yap, you’ve read that correctly and there’s no any “wonder” about it.

Chris Delon is the main man behind the app, the same guy who made the hit iPhone game – Topple.

The goal of the game is to help Alice get through 48 challenges, themed with the legendary story’s eight most popular characters including The Cheshire Cat, The Hatter, and The Queen of Hearts, while trying to outmaneuver a never-ending barrage of explosives. Alice in Bomberland also features an 11 song soundtrack, 24 types of power-ups, and an artwork designed by professional children’s book illustrator – Mark Meyers.

Samsung, Handmark announce Global Venture Fund for app developers

Samsung and Handmark are teaming up to launch a new Global Venture Fund to invest in companies and/or individuals with “innovative, market-changing game ideas” for Samsung mobile phones.

The two companies are searching for games that best showcase Samsung mobile phones and the “advanced features they offer.” Both current and new content ideas are encouraged, taking timing and cost into consideration.

Companies and/or individuals selected will receive up to $250,000 each to fund the development of winning ideas. In addition, Handmark will provide assistance with development, testing and certification, as well as distribution of the application through the Samsung Application Store.

If you’re interested, you can get more information from a dedicated website. The deadline for entries is November 20, 2009 at 5 PM CT.

David Hasselhoff’s iPhone app dissapoints – doesn’t tell how to share a scene with Pamela Anderson

One of the world’s most popular TV icons is getting an iPhone app. It’s David Hasselhoff, whose application is called “Ask The Hoff.”

Here’s what it does (from the press release):

According to the app, scientists have downloaded Hoff’s brain into the iPhone. After the user asks a question and shakes the phone, an animated version of the Hoff replies with one of a number of pre-recorded responses, voiced by Hasselhoff himself.

As you can see, the app is super simple and in that sense I’m not sure many people will pour out a buck to grab it. Then again, many people dig David, me NOT being one of them.

Volkswagen of America relies solely on an iPhone app for the GTI launch

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) certainly succeeded in getting other major brands on its side. Today we bring you the story of Volkswagen of America, which is launching the latest GTI exclusively on an iPhone game app. And that’s their main marketing vehicle – rest of the budget will be used to entice users to find the app and download it! Yap, that’s mostly PR as well as some paid search marketing.

Apparently, this will cost the auto-maker about $500,000 which is a small change compared with their 2006 GTI launch that ended up costing $60 million. If proves efficient, I’ve no doubts we’ll see every friggin’ auto-maker adopting this approach, turning a novel idea into something super dull.

iScratcher is a scratch-to-win iPhone game, mobile advertising platform

A company called Mobile Thunder introduced iScratcher, a free application that turns an iPhone/iPod touch into a scratch-to-win game card. The main idea is in getting a portion of mobile marketing dollars. In that sense, the company applied for a patent in an effort to protect its unique idea/use for marketing purposes.

Here’s how it works (from the press release):

Advertisers sponsor scratch-off games that display on mobile device screens. Players “scratch off” a game card by wiping the screen with a finger to reveal sponsor brand images and potential prizes such as cash, products, coupons, promotional codes, lottery results, or content. Using GPS technology, iScratcher will provide location-specific game odds, prizes and — with another tap of the finger — a map with directions to nearby stores where prizes can be instantly redeemed.

At the moment this is the iPhone/iPod Touch thing only, but I’ve no doubts Mobile Thunder will port its technology to other platforms in no time — they even say Android and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) versions are in the queue.

I like the idea, as it promotes the win-win concept, with both advertisers and users getting something out of it. The only problem is whether it will reach the tipping point to scale. Without further benefits, I can’t see myself scratching for coupons on a daily basis. We’ll see. In the meantime, you can check out a dedicated website for more information.

Settlers of Catan Available for iPhone

Catan – The First Island has found its way into the iTunes App Store, letting you trade clay, build roads, train soldiers, and do everything that made the Settlers of Catan board game a classic. Multiplayer is available, but involves handing off the phone rather than via Bluetooth. Still, even if you want to hone your settling skills solo, characterful AI players are available to keep you on your toes. Additional expansion content is in the works, alongside more game options and scenarios. Go ahead and grab it in the iTunes App Store for $4.99, or if you’re hankering for something free, check out their online game. A more toned-down version for feature phones is also available.

NBA Live iPhone Released; Live Out Your Hoop Dreams While On The Go

Earlier this month, EA Mobile mentioned NBA Live was making its way to the iPhone platform later this month. As we all know, time does fly, and thus explains NBA Live finally releasing on the App Store.

NBA Live is a great effort by EA to bring its popular basketball game franchise to the iPhone. Players are controlled by touching the left side of the screen, which pops up a virtual control stick onto the screen. You then tilt your finger in the direction you want your player to move to. If you’re in possession of the ball, you can either shoot or pass. Depending on your momentum and how well you’re covered by a defending player, you can even perform a variety of dunks with a flick of your thumb. While on defense, you can steal or attempt to block a shot by jumping.

NBA Live features all 30 NBA teams, players, and accurate stats. Multiple game modes allow players to either play a quick game in Exhibition Mode, or dedicate themselves to a full season of play in Season Mode. Player models and animations are pretty detailed as well, considering the platform its running on. All in all, NBA Live is a title basketball loving iPhone owners should absolutely consider owning.

Reebok iSprint tests your finger flicking powers

Reebok is out with a second title (as far as we know) in the AppStore. Released in conjunction with UsTwo and Inside Mobile, Reebok iSprint is a neat little game that sees you running the 100 meters with your fingers to get the fastest time through four courses – indoor, outdoor, grass, and tarmac. That’s done by flicking your finger around — it’s super simple, hence the game is free with the point not only to entertain you, but also to keep the Reebok brand engraved in your brain.

Of course, a social element is also there, thanks to the global scoring system. Last time we checked, the record was around 7.5 seconds, which is quite impressive. In addition, you can also compete with your buddies via Bluetooth.

Finally, Reebok wants to use the app as a medium to reach its customers. Hence, from time to time you can expect to learn about their latest offers…
