Gameloft selling 400 Times More Games on iPhone than Android

Gameloft had previously been very excited about Android, jumping into the market with twenty titles last February, but they have since changed their tune, and are pulling away from Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s mobile platform. Gameloft’s director of finance, Alexandre de Rochefort, had this to say about their performance on Android at a recent investor’s meeting:

“We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like … many others … It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue … We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android.”

Ouch. The iPhone has definitely made a name for itself in mobile gaming, and combined with mass consumer demand for the handset itself, it’s easy to see why a big name publisher would side with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). Motorola (NYSE: MOT)’s droid is certainly pushing hard with its marketing and preliminary sales have been decent, but odds are slim that it will put a significant dent in iPhone’s numbers. The bigger question raised here is “is this attitude prevalent across application segments other than gaming?” Gameloft is a pretty big deal; I can only imagine how many other major app developers are openly neglecting other mobile platforms as a result of the iPhone’s massive gravitational pull. With resources shrinking for a lot of companies, devs have to be especially picky about which camp they chose.

GL Golf for iPhone and iPod Touch Updated, and on Sale

Looks like my bud Jake over at Nuclear Nova Software has been hard at work on one of my favorite golf games for the iPhone and iPod Touch… GL Golf. He’s updated GL Golf (along with GL Golf Deluxe and ‘Lite’), bringing all versions up to 1.09. In the latest edition you’ll get 12 new courses (awesome), four new clubs, a 50% increase in performance and many, many, many bug fixes and tweaks.

To celebrate the update, Jake is offering GL Golf for $0.99 (regular $4.99) and GL Golf Deluxe for $5.99 (regular $7.99). The discounts are good for a week, so I’d recommend trying before you buy with the ‘Lite’ version… If you like, pick up the standard or deluxe version before next Monday to save a few bucks.

Other notable improvements in 1.09 include:

New course available through in-app purchasing (GL Golf Deluxe)
Fast forward and slow motion buttons when the ball is in flight
Improved ball trail effect
Wind arrow is no longer covered by trees
Fixed resume game submitting scores on the Old Andrews course
Improved in game scorecard
Added version information to the main menu
Added a link to the support FAQ
Perfect “ding” shots now show a visual confirmation
Resume button now shows information about the current course and hole
Fixed a bug where scores <10 wouldn’t post on the LE National course (GL Golf Lite)

Chillingo’s Ravensword: The Fallen King is easily the best RPG title in the AppStore

Chillingo keeps pumping new games to the AppStore. Their latest baby is called Ravensword: The Fallen King, and it’s probably one of the best (if not the best) RPG title for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

As you’re probably aware what RPG genre brings to the table, I’ll quickly jump to the game features:

Gameplay is a hybrid between 3D action game (FPS), adventure and RPG.
An expansive 3D world filled with diverse locations and an array of characters.
Enemies include Orcs, Trolls, Ogres and Demons.
Along the way you will be able to pick different weapons, items, and magical runes.
You can play either in first or third-person perspective.
Spatial 3D audio includes footsteps of creatures as they creep up next to you.
Additional features include horse riding, shoot practicing, and animal hunting in the forest.
Secret areas, monsters, and treasures keep hard-core RPG fans playing long after they’ve completed the main storyline.

Harry Potter gets the official iPhone app

Warner Bros has launched its first Harry Potter app in the AppStore – Harry Potter Spells, which lets players cast spells at their opponents using hand gestures. There is a total of 14 different spells available, and you can either play for yourself, or against a friend — all from a single device.

Right from the start, you’re invited to join the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and visit Ollivanders’ shop to pick up your wand. Afterwards, you attend the classes to learn how to cast spells, end eventually you’re ready for duels.

Finally, it’s worth adding there’s the Facebook integration, allowing you to post your scores on Facebook. The price is $4.99 and the AppStore link is here…

Konami to launch 6 Windows Mobile games in December

Konami is on board to sell its games in Windows Marketplace for Mobile. In that sense, just in time for the service launch in Japan, the company has announced that it will release six new mobile games for the platform. The Konami titles that will be available for purchase through Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s mobile store are:

DanceDanceRevolution S,
Gradius II,
TwinBee,
Konami’s Sudoku,
Konami’s Solitaire, and
Mobile Pawafuru Proyakyu, which will be available only in Japan.

Interesting thing is that all games will come with on-screen controls, allowing all-touchscreen device owners to enjoy them, as well.

Video: Avatar iPhone game trailer

If you’re not living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the upcoming movie – Avatar. Not surprisingly it will get a video game for various platforms, iPhone included. Gameloft scored the licence and they’re preparing to release the game on December 15th, few days before the movie hits theaters.

We’re hearing Avatar for iPhone doesn’t follow the film’s plot — instead, it’s a prequel to the movie tale. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen. In the meantime, we have a trailer to share. Here it comes, ready or not.

RPG Meets Puzzle Game in Mean Girls for iPhone

Now, I’m not exactly in the iPhone-toting 14-year-old girl target demographic for this kind of game, but the concept struck me as really original: players adopt the role of artsy, nerdy, rebellious, or slacker high school students, and employ either flattery or abuse to curry loyalty from a variety of cliques. The tactics you use depend entirely on which blocks you pair up in the puzzle game that comprises the bulk of play. You get new powers and particular bonuses depending on your character, but crossing that with a highly-recognizable Bejeweled-style puzzle makes for a neat mix – if you’ve played Puzzle Quest at all, this might seem familiar. Mean Girls is based on the movie of the same name from 2004, starring Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey, and should be available soon in the iPhone App Store for $0.99.

If you’re looking for something a little manlier, holing up in a bunker versus zombie Nazis is always an option.

If you’re a fan of shooing Nazis and Zombies, then this game might be what you’ve been waiting for. Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies brings the consoles’ ever popular “Night of the Undead” map pack, where you and your teammates work together to defend a point from wave after wave of Nazi Zombies, and brings it to the iPhone.

Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies features 2-player co-op over bluetooth, as well as 4-player co-op over Wi-Fi. Players can also create public or private online matches, so fight alongside strangers or your your best buds to fight off the zombie invasion. Controls are all on-screen and offer auto-targeting of the shooting reticule, but players can also zoom in and shoot from a more accurate perspective.

Activision also notes that Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies will feature new downloadable content in the future which will keep you Nazi Zombie murdering SOBs coming back for more! Jawohl!

One more game I’d like to tell you about today. Heck, it’s Friday… let’s have some fun, right?

Bplay has announced the launch of their new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). If you’re into retro-gaming at all (I’m talking Sega Genesis here), this one should probably be on your radar.

Light Racer 3D for Android

TGIF, right? Because it’s Friday I feel like covering a little more game action than usual. Just happened to check out a game from Battery Powered Games called ‘Light Racer 3D’ for Android. It has gone to version 1.2, and is a lot of fun…

There’s a definite TRON flavor to this one, as the object is to race your motorcycle to the death against an opponent in a 3D arena. Hem your opponent in to your ‘light rays’ left behind as you travel around the board… But there’s more to watch out for than just that. There are obstacles, walls and more that you’ll need to evade. Who can last the longest without crashing? That’s the whole idea for this one.

Video: Gameloft’s Skater Nation for iPhone is in works

In its latest video podcast, Gameloft released the trailer for its upcoming free-roaming iPhone skating game – Skater Nation. As you’re about to see – the game rocks, or at least promises to deliver tons of fun for skate-lovin’ folks.

You can select from eight different street surfing board jockeys and then browse around the city. Both accelerometer and touch controls are used, so you can show-off all the tricks you’ve learned… And now the mentioned video podcast featuring Skater Nation trailer. Enjoy!

More BlackBerry OpenGL in Action: PBA Bowling and Super Monkey Ball

Need For Speed played the poster boy role for RIM’s OpenGL ES announcement, but they’re definitely not the only ones who are excited about the new options for developers. Here’s a quick demo of Concrete Software’s PBA Bowling, coming to the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Storm2. Sega also said that they have started work on getting their extremely successful Super Monkey Ball franchise onto the Storm2. The OpenGL support is limited to certain hardware constraints, so right now only the Storm2 and Curve 8530 (oddly enough) will support the enhanced graphical capabilities. It’s worth noting that though 3D is the big thing, OpenGL can also do some good work on the 2D front. Check out the earlier announcement from the BlackBerry Developer Conference for more info.

OpenGL ES Arrives on BlackBerry, 3D Gaming in Tow

Gaming on BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) has never been what you would call breathtaking – a few low-key casual games here and there and the preloaded Brickbreaker could handle the lion’s share of twitchy boredom. Well, the platform is taking a big jump as OpenGL ES support has gone official and is currently available in the beta BlackBerry JDE we had mentioned earlier.

The in-app purchacing sounded vaguely iPhone OS 3.0, and OpenGL even moreso, but between these multimedia improvements and BlackBerry’s existing expertise in productivity, the whole platform is feeling a lot more balanced. Shown here is Need for Speed, which we’ll have some hands-on footage of shortly, complete with gesture controls for brake and boosting, and accelerometer use for steering. There’s going to be at least one other big name game showing off what OpenGL on BlackBerry can do, and we’ll be sure to check it out.

Fallen Earth MMO Getting an iPhone App

The post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Fallen Earth, has just announced an in-depth iPhone app that lets you take care of quite a bit of in-game business from your mobile. For those not familiar with the genre, MMOs are generally subscription-based computer games that take place wholly online with other players (either cooperatively or competitively, as the case may be). Players control characters in the shared game world to embark on missions, gather equipment, craft items, and a bunch of other stuff. If you’ve heard of World of Warcraft, then you know what an MMO is.

Anyway, Fallen Earth is working on an app that allows players to do a few things in-game without having to be at your computer, which is actually really handy since things keep happening in the game even when you’re not playing. Folks will be able to view character information similar to WoW’s Armory app for iPhone, but the real kicker will be talking to clan members, managing auction house sales, and crafting queues remotely; that’s changing the mobile app from an MMO companion reference to an actual part of the game, which I really like. Classic Apple II game Transylvania ported to iPhone

Here’s one for hard-core back-from-the-days Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) dans – the Apple II classic text adventure Transylvania has been ported to iPhone!

Those not familiar with the game should check out a dedicated Wikipedia page for all the details. I’ll only point out key facts about the iPhone version:

The game was remade in collaboration with Antonio Antiochia, the original author of Transylvania!
Gameplay has been updated and you don’t have to text input commands. Using the magic of touch is enough, but if you’re so nostalgic that options still exists.
The graphics has been updated, which is kinda expected.

The price is 99 cents which is like nothing for the experience of time travelling.

Gameloft: What recession? We had 18% growth in sales in the first nine months of this year!

There’s no recession for the leading mobile games developer Gameloft. During the first nine months of 2009, the company’s consolidated sales went up by 18%, reaching 90.2 million EUR. On a constant exchange rate basis, that’s actually 16%, which is still impressive.

Here’s how the numbers went from quarter to quarter compared to the last year (in millions EUR):

Q1 2009 – 30.8 vs Q1 2008 – 25.3 (+22%)
Q2 2009 – 29.3 vs Q2 2008 – 25.0 (+17%)
Q3 2009 – 30.1 vs Q3 2008 – 26.2 (+`15%)
9-month total – 90.2 vs 76.5 (+18%)

During the first nine months of 2009, Europe, North America and the rest of the world represented 38%, 33% and 29% of total sales, respectively…

Highlights for Children is launching its first iPhone app – the original Highlights Hidden Pictures game, which (as you can presume) targets iPhone and/or iPod Touch-ownin’ parents.

The seek-and-find game is designed to challenge child’s visual skills to allow him/her to locate hidden objects within Highlights’ classic kid-friendly illustrations. There are over a hundred hidden objects to find and when each is located, it turns from black and white to color and a sound chimes to announce the discovery.

In total, Highlights Hidden Pictures features eight puzzles, and two free additional puzzles are available after registration. The price is $1.99. (iTunes link)

Point and click adventure Dracula: the Path of the Dragon hitting AppStore soon

A new point and click adventure will be hitting the AppStore later this fall. It’s called Dracula: the Path of the Dragon and it promises to deliver tons of fun, mixing myth and reality, science and history, and medicine and superstition.

The storyline sees you controlling Father Arno Moriani, who is sent to investigate a potential candidate for sainthood in Transylvania. The year is 1920 and you begin investigation of Dr. Martha Calugarul in the village of Vladoviste, half-destroyed in World War I. On the hillside sits the Castle of Twilight, the famed home of Vlad the Impaler. Father Arno begins to track a mysterious figure he believes is responsible for evil deeds in the area. He realizes later, that he is inadvertently walking the path of the dragon. As you solve puzzles based on medicine, history, and the occult, you’ll uncover the mystery of the dragon and of the vampires…

Yap, I’m intrigued with the idea and screenshots look promising, hence I can’t wait to play it. The price is unknown at this stage, but I’m guessing that’s something we’ll know sooner rather than later. And while we’re waiting for the game release, we have a trailer to share.
