Google (NSDQ: GOOG) searches for movies on Android, iPhone, and webOS are about to get a little more helpful today. With a few taps, you can find showtimes, theatres, ratings, and category sorting. Throw in a dash of GPS integration to keep the results local, reviews, and streaming trailers, and you’ve got yourself quite the upgrade. Man, Google has been on a roll with the mobile news lately. Maps navigation in Android 1.6, web services facelift, Apps upgrades, and mobile coupons are all new this week. Here’s a video demonstrating the new movie search.
Fifty DKP minus for picking New Moon. Which are promptly earned back with the double-cross fist-bump at the end. If you’re in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand, go ahead and boot up google.com on your mobile browser to try out the updated movie search.
Samsung Canada’s site is showing off a handset we haven’t really seen before: the A886 Forever. It’s running the all-too-familiar TouchWiz user interface, and proudly sports the Rogers (NYSE: RCI) (NYSE: RCI) branding. Here’s a quick run-down of the specs:
Quad band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) and dual band HSDPA (850 / 1900)
3.0″, 240 x 400 WQVGA TFT touchscreen
1000 mAh battery, 3 hour talk time, 250 hour standby
2 megapixel camera with autofocus (no flash)
AGPS, Stereo Bluetooth
They’re pitching the A886 as a web-capable phone that you don’t necessarily need a data plan to enjoy; bizarre contradiction, especially without Wi-Fi in there. It’s pretty mid-range, so it’s entirely possible that this will fit into Rogers’ sub-$99 “webphones” family.
In the tradition of dropping prices for the upcoming holiday season, EA has announced they are slashing the prices to a number of EA titles that are currently listed in the App Store. If you’ve been eyeing some of EA’s titles, now would be a great time to take advantage of these price drops. Sales end on 11/29/09, so you have the entire Thanksgiving weekend to ponder.
After a sneak peek, the LG GW880 OPhone has been announced by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL). The GW880 packs a 3.5-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen, Bluetooth, 5-megapixel camera, 256MB of RAM/512MB of ROM, CMMB mobile TV and running on Android over China’s TD-SCDMA network. Of course, the apps will all be approved by big daddy China Mobile before making it to the market, but it should still give the iPhone a bit of a fight over there. The Android scene is just getting started in China, too; Lenovo and Motorola are likely launching their own handsets also running on China Mobile’s Open Mobile Phone framework. No word on release date or price point for the GW880, but we’ll be keeping an ear open.
Some of you may have already been enjoying streaming video from your Android device to the big wide web thanks to the UStream Broadcaster app released in September, but for those who are more interested in watching something, UStream Viewer is now available. As you can see, you can keep tabs on what’s playing live (as well as chat with other viewers), see what’s been recorded, what’s coming up as well as review your own videos, all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Combined with the Broadcaster and a beefy data plan, you won’t be hurting for entertainment while on the go. The viewer hasn’t showed up on UStream’s mobile app page yet, but you can go ahead and download it from the Android Market right now – get it before 7 PM PST, and you can tune in to the Kiss concert live from your phone.
Bell’s inagural HSPA lineup had lots of new toys, but telus (NYSE: TU) was drawing a bit more attention with the HTC Hero. Luckily for Bell, Android will be one less leg-up the competition will have, as they’re getting the Samsung Galaxy I7500, according to this promotional poster. The Galaxy has been traipsing around Europe since launching over the summer, and boasts a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage, 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, and Wi-Fi; no custom work on the user interface, it’s straight vanilla Android. Samsung has already provided the Impact and omnia II for Bell’s HSPA grand opening, but the Galaxy is really the icing on the cake. No word on a release date, but I think it’s safe to expect the I7500 in time for the holidays.
You might have caught wind of the eBay app from the BlackBerry Developer Conference – well, it’s available now for download, allowing you to watch auctions, place bids, receive notifications of being outbid right in your Messages app, and enjoy native Calendar integration for reminders. Notifications all take advantage of the new push services, so you get notified of being outbid the second it happens, not five minutes after the auction’s wrapped up. eBay for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) works with PayPal, as you’d expect, but I wonder if there’s BlackBerry Wallet integration, too… There was talk at BBDC about the Wallet being linked to in-app purchaces. Anyway, see more of the eBay app and get downloading in the BlackBerry App World, or head over to eBay to see their other mobile offers.
Motorola (NYSE: MOT) i410, which we saw at the FCC roughly a month ago, has been officially announced and it’s heading to Sprint (NYSE: S)-owned Boost Mobile. As it’s usually the case with iDEN phones, specs won’t impress many, and the same is true for the phone’s design. To be fair, that keyboard kinda reminds me on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N93, a phone that I had for a year and loved it. However, i410’s specs are far from the N93’s, which actually is an S60 smartphone.
The Moto i410 comes with two screens (96×32-pixel external and 128×160-pixel internal), Bluetooth, push-to-talk functionality, speakerphone, and that’s about it. No camera, no microSD card slot. It’s a super basic phone for those who need to text and call someone from time to time, and eventually rely on the walkie-talkie service (PTT) for some reason…
Even though most carriers around the globe still have to get the LG BL40 Chocolate, the Korean company has prepared a special edition of the device to celebrate the Christmas season. The so called New Chocolate Christmas Edition BL40 will drive the built-in camera’s megapixel count to 8, up from the “default” 5, and will hit South Korea on December 10th. In addition, this special edition handset comes in a special color – black case with golden accents, while each buyer gets a voucher that can win them up to 5 million KRW (more than $4,000).
And that’s about all we know at this stage. No word on pricing, nor whether the improved BL40 will ever hit the Western hemisphere. We think it will, but you never know…
