It’s kinda nice to see two pretty different companies agreeing to make Android more secure. One of the downsides of an open platform like Android is security and deals like these are struck to address that problem. Kudos to both companies for taking this route.

Qualcomm’s wholly-owned subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies has been working with Facebook to optimize Facebook Home and Facebook for Android across all Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. According to Qualcomm’s press release, these optimizations are designed to enable better overall performance, lower power consumption and improved data efficiency for consumers using Facebook Home and Facebook for Android.

In that sense, the collaboration between the two companies involved systems-level performance enhancements related to key Snapdragon processor technologies including GPU, CPU and 3G/4G modem. The end result is a performance optimized solution that delivers a “great Facebook experience while minimizing power and improving data efficiency.”

Sounds cool and I’m wondering what will other chip makers make of it. Will they also jump in bed with the social network to make Facebook running on other smartphones (those not using Qualcomm processors) equally great. We’ll see and in the meantime, I’m sure that the two companies will find way to make Facebook “properly” work on lower-end phones, not just the likes of HTC First, HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4…

The problem today’s mobile web browsers have is that they don’t use all the processing power modern smartphones and tablets have. WebGL, which uses the graphics processor; and HTML5 Web Workers, which bring a multi-threading approach to JavaScript; are the only exceptions to the rule and Mozilla thinks there’s room for improvements.

According to the company’s CTO Brendan Eich, parallel computing is the future though today’s web standards themselves make it hard to move away from the sequential processing.

Mozilla Research started working on Servo as a research project in 2012. Their browser engine is still far away from being available in any commercial project so we’re not sure when we’ll see it in our mobile devices.

Samsung on its end seems to believe that such a browser could give it an edge in the long-term and who knows – we may see the next-gen Firefox available not only for its Android but also for Tizen smartphones…

In order to do so, you’ll have to buy a $250 hardware module and then pay an additional $5 every month.

The module itself is hooked to the vehicle’s ODBII port, and once plugged – it automatically starts sending data back to your web dashboard and an Android app relying on the built-in mobile Internet connection. Among the data you’ll be able to check out are things like gas mileage, tire pressure, battery status and remaining fuel. Moreover, you can even check engine code to track down a problem, set RPM and speed alerts, and unlock/lock/start/turn off your car remotely.

Of course, this module also comes with a built-in GPS receiver, allowing for fleet management services as well as “good ol’” stalking. You do want to know your kids’ / spouse’s whereabouts, right?

If all this excites you enough, feel free to proceed to this page at Verizon’s website for all additional information. The free to download Android app is linked below.

The Croods movie promises a ton of fun and funny characters, and I can’t wait to see it hitting the theaters. In the meantime, we’ll have a mobile game to enjoy (for Android and iOS). It is launching before the movie itself, on March 14th, and while you wait, we have the game trailer to show you. Unfortunately, it doesn’t reveal what the game will be all about, but knowing Rovio we’re expecting a funny little puzzler. And yes, we’re looking forward to try it out…

Alcatel and ZTE won’t be the only companies making a Firefox-based phone for so long. From a press release talking about co-operation between Sony Mobile and Telefónica, we learn that the Japanese company will join the trend and release its own device that runs Firefox mobile OS. The official word goes like this: the two parties will lay out a “joint technical collaboration to explore the development of a handset running Mozilla’s Firefox OS open source mobile platform.”

Bob Ishida, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Head of Products Business Group, Sony Mobile Communications went one step further saying that Sony’s engineers are “now working with Firefox OS Mobile and HTML5, evolving technologies which show great potential.”

The result of these efforts should apparently be visible at some point next year, and in the meantime, we hope to catch a glimpse (i.e. in-the-wild photo) of the upcoming device when we’ll get back to you with new information…

Rest of the press release talks about how great partnership Telefónica and Sony have, and how they’re looking forward to launch the new Xperia Z. In other words, nothing too exciting.

The deal is conducted between Telefonica Digital and Sprint’s Pinsight Media+, the companies’ digital / mobile ad arms.

The pair say they will “explore efficient ways of providing global advertisers and agencies with new and easier options to plan multi country mobile campaigns.”

Initially, they will target the US (via Sprint), and European and Latin American markets (Telefonica) with plans to grow “further in scale, particularly to include Asia.”

According to Vice president of Sprint’s New Ventures division Mike Cooley, through this alliance, the two giants are seeking to efficiently expand capabilities to deliver mobile marketing solutions for US-based advertisers into Europe and Latin America, while Telefonica Digital aims to do the same for their regional customers in the United States.

Sounds like a plan…

MetaWatch, which is one of the most promising smart watch projects to date, is teaming up with mobile phone industrial designer Frank Nuovo and his company Design Studio Nuovo (DSN) to make these watches not only functional, but also cool to wear for everyone. The result is expected to be announced later in the year and it will include a new product line of “stylish and highly-functional watches and mobile accessories.”

We don’t have any additional details (like an image), but boy does it sound exciting. While I personally like MetaWatch I know many folks who can’t imagine wearing one of them due to its “too techy” look and feel. Morons…

Anyway, the prospects of collaboration excites both companies with MetaWatch’s CEO saying it’s about “building beautifully designed, functional and wearable objects of desire.” And I guess by that he means watches everyone, not just the tech savvy, will want to wear. Not that we geeks care about that part, but we’re open to surprises… as long as MetaWatch keeps its “smart component,” informing us about calls, messages, weather and other stuff…
