Newsy.com’s iPhone App Soars to #6 in the iTunes App Store

By Ben Robinson on Friday, October 16th, 2009 at 2:09 PM PST
In Applications, Random

The Newsy app, which offers multi-source video news, is currently ranked #6 in the News category of free apps in the iTunes App Store.
A news analyzer, not a news aggregator, Newsy.com is the only multi-source video news service producing daily videos that analyze the key differences in how a story is being reported by various news organizations. In 2 to 3 minutes, users understand the nuances in coverage – offering context with convenience.
Well maybe getting to 6th position isn’t the pinnacle of stats, but, Newsy is a good app – the neat UI and to-the-point video sumamries are worth a look:
A slightly different take on presenting news, and one which I frequent. Obviously, you can get the App by typing ‘Newsy’ in to the search in the App Store/iTunes. Or you can visit the website here.

google eclair Giant Eclair Arrives on Google Campus

A quickie here for the Android users/fans in the house. Looks like the team at the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) just had a new ‘Eclair’ delivered to their campus. As you can see in the videos after the jump (3 quick videos), the Eclair has joined ‘Cupcake’, ‘Robot’ and ‘Donut’ on the scene. At any rate, now that the official ‘Eclair’ has arrived, I think we can look forward to Android 2.0 coming down the pipes soon. 1.6 is good and all, but won’t 2.0 be sweeter? Sweet like an Eclair?

Check out the videos after the jump (it’ll only take you a minute). That eclair looks delicious.

Teen kicks mom in the throat, head butts brother, bites father, all because his fone was taken away

In Falmouth, Massachusetts, some little punk bitch teenager kicked his mom in the throat, head butted his brother and took a bite out of his father, all because his mommy took away his mobile phone. Police said his mom took away his mobile phone after he hit his 15 year old brother. The 18 year old punk bitch also has a case of the dumb ass since his father is a corrections officer. He had a pair of hand cuffs on hand which he used to restrain the young man to prevent him from further committing acts of douche baggery. When police came to remove him from his home, they had to use leg cuffs as well because the little prick must’ve pounded too many Red Bulls that morning. He is being held on $1,000 bail.

His best friend is the famous angry German Counter Strike kid:

This video was uploaded to YouTube on August 23, 2007. Why has it taken over 2 years to reach my eyes is beyond me:

The sad thing is that I really do dance like that in clubs. No wonder the women don’t talk to me. Thank science for inventing rohypnol.

Saturday Silliness: T-Pain Auto-Tunes President Barack Obama

You may recall me telling you about a fun little app called ‘I Am T-Pain‘. The app makes full use of Auto-Tune technology to ensure even if you have no singing skills at all… you’ll sound half decent. The app is actually quite a bit of fun, and is absolute good times at parties.

Long story short, Jimmy Kimmel teamed up with T-Pain to put together a hilarious little piece above. No need to say anything else here. Just watch the video… and… enjoy :)

Note: For more on the ‘I Am T-Pain‘ app, check out my previous look at it here.

Terrible battery life and why we’re all going to have our own clouds in the future

By Stefan Constantinescu on Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 2:02 AM PST

iphone battery low Terrible battery life and why were all going to have our own clouds in the futureMegapixels, multitouch, haptics, gestures, ease of use, and revolutionary user experiences mean nothing if your mobile device is off thanks to a dead battery. As we expect our mobile phones to do more and more, and keep us connected to every facet of our digital lives, how are we going to get through a whole day without having to carry a charger in our bag and quickly scanning every building we walk into for a power outlet?

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had the right idea, a phrase you’re not going to hear me say very often, when they launched push notifications. The concept was that instead of having your device ping Flickr to see if your friends uploaded new photos, ping ESPN to see if the Yankees won, ping GMail to see if you have new email, ping Twitter to see if you have any new @ replies, etc., your device would have a single connection to an Apple server that would handle all your traffic requests and then spit out the results.

Imagine your instant messaging program, in my case Skype, but instead of having a list of friends in your list of contacts, you have a list of services you use. Instead of keeping a persistent connection to each and every one of the companies in your list of contacts, you have a single connection to a central server, Skype, who handles requests on your behalf and just serves you the results. That central server can be your own personal cloud, running in some data center somewhere, and constantly connected to your mobile phone.

Every time your mobile phone powers on the radio and transmits/receives data, the battery takes a hit. In the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) CLIQ preview posted on The Boy Genius Report, here is what BG had to say about the battery life:

Not even joking when I say this — the Motorola CLIQ has possibly the worst battery life of any phone I’ve tested in recent memory with the current software. Maybe Motorola’s BLUR back-end isn’t optimized yet, maybe the phone software isn’t final, but this is ridiculously bad. Especially since it doesn’t even deliver your status updates when you want them, it just sits there pulling in data constantly updating in batches. I haven’t used the device as a primary device so I couldn’t give hard statistics on battery life when phone calling, but with on and off usage, it’s ridiculously bad.

Now what about just pushing the data versus polling for it? Internet geeks are currently fighting over which push protocol we should all be using, RSSCloud or PubSubHubbub, but we can all agree that push enabling data is the future. Now we just have to wait for all the services and blogs to start transmitting data in real time, versus having to poll them at a set interval of time.

Why should we each have our own cloud versus letting the device receive push requests from newly enabled push services? Because not every service we use is going to be push enabled over night. Adoption is always slow, and there will be some sites that never even make the switch. Having one central location, in the cloud, that we can all log into to manage our information flow just seems like the right way to go forward.

Am I nuts or do you think we’re heading in this direction?

This video is brilliant. No other word to describe it, just brilliant. Deep inside every single group of friends, there is some ass flute tweeting, facebooking, and flickring every 30 seconds. This video is for you. Get. A. Life.

NetLingo: beepilepsy

By Ben Robinson on Sunday, September 27th, 2009 at 3:07 PM PST
In Random, The Digital Life

netlingo logo NetLingo: beepilepsyAnother word of the today from tech dictionary site NetLingo – this time it’s:

beepilepsy

The brief seizure people sometimes suffer when their beepers go off, especially in vibrator mode. Characterized by physical spasms, goofy facial expressions, and stopping speech in mid-sentence.

Ha ha ha! This one made me chuckle, mainly because I’ve seen it SO many times in meetings! Not so much with beepers these days of course, but with phones that people have set to silent, for fear incurring the wrath of their boss! The random body jerks that occur always liven up a dull meeting :-)

You can check out all that is tech-terminology, from the site that is Netlingo, here.
